Seen a few of these, but yours gives the most genuine experience (some people knew where the break was already).... Been out and found the break in mine too now... Thanks again

Many thanks! This is great. I just setup around 600m of boundary wire so this is going to be a lifesaver!

Thanks for this. I used this method to track the cable on the perimeter as I have to dig a trench for drainage and want to avoid breaking the wire. I used exactly the same radio. On AM just past the 6 marker, I kept the antenna folded in, and hovered the radio over the area. It seemed much quicker and a huge amount more accurate.

I remember you sharing this technique some time ago, it's quite clever. Given I'm an M0 ham I probably should have known this myself! Essentially the perimeter cable is acting as an antenna. The base station generates an alternating signal (sort of square wave AC) that is detected by the robot mower to stop it deviating outside the perimeter.
This same signal is picked up by the AM radio. When the line is broken there's no transmission to receive and boom, there's your break in the cable.
Thankfully when my robot mower lunches the perimeter wire it proudly languishes over the crime scene - the real ballache is trying to resolder it outside with my poverty spec aldi special gas soldering iron :)

Yeah, when the mower eats it you can find it easy. When "someone" damages it you need to get more creative. Another roof saga incident.

@@SpectrumGeeks you do have to wonder if they had (have?) a check list of things to ruin your day

Why mess about with soldering - the crimp joiners are so easy to use, as shown in the video.

My cable seems to break every winter this will save us loads of time thanks very much. We wonder if strimming the edges causes the breaks

Strimming the edges should be fine (assuming you have your cables 30cm from the edge as per the install recommendations. Does seem odd you have the cable failure on a regular basis though.

I have a break on my cable and this is not working for me. Perhaps it only works when there is a full break? The am radio is detecting an energy but as soon as you switch which cable you have plugged in you get a different result.

Not sure what you mean by switching which plug you have connected. I leave all wires connected as per normal and follow the rough outline of wires listening for a difference.
Used this technique again just the other week as I put a spade through a cable by accident but didn't realise till after being on holiday and realising the mower had not left the dock.
If the radio approach is not working, you can buy more expensive solutions.

Hi there! Appreciate the video! Just a quick question… I’m from the UK and I’ve yet to put my Flymo away. I was just wondering if I had to put away the charging dock? Seems like you’ve left that in this video? Thanks!

Flymo recommend you put the base away, but I tend to leave it out all year round and just put the mower into hibernation. I have some other videos on this also.
