  • My thoughts on whether or not the Casey Neistat filmmaking and story telling class on Monthly was worth the rime and cost.

    excellent review, thanks. You know what the ladies say, if they don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy

    Excellent review. I agree will all your point regarding the class. Oh and nice throw back to Red green!

    Your comments are very similar to feedback from full time collage students during the pandemic. Too much responsibility has been pushed off onto peer groups and resulted in dis-engaged teachers.
    BUT: your Red/Green video is one of my favorites, that does not include hot metal. & you answered 2 of my posted questions. The shark in yr water storage was funny.

    You narrate very well because of Neistat's online tutelage, but most of what you learnt was practise; which makes perfect.

    There biggest failure to most of the people that take this class is going to be them not being social. Vlogs don't grow themselves! It's a missed opportunity for them not to be more involved in that peer group. Especially if each of the 20 people actually did grow big followings. Do you not think that having made those connections with your peers would have been beneficial in that case? Everybody's looking for the easy answer, and they were probably hoping that Casey's class was going to just give them everything.

    I'm glad the class was worth it, online learning is a great tool this day and age. By the way, i've always thought you were a great story teller!

    I've never had an issue with the videos you make John. They are always informative, generate motivation, and watching them is like learning from the mate next door. Easy, relaxed, and at a pace where a bloke can have a beer whilst watching.

    I ended up recutting the first assignment like 4 times because it was drawn out so long. Overall I’m happy with my experience, but the majority of my peer group didn’t contribute at all. Maybe half of them didn’t even do the assignments.

    Excellent review, John. It matched my experience. My expectations from a guy who produced a video a day was higher than producing a video every two weeks. There were a lot of good techniques and problem-solving tips that made the class worthwhile. Thanks for posting this.

    Excellent video - Made me re-think that the peer group was more useful than i thought... Keeping me accountable was a very important point. You speak to the camera very well!

    I'd study Paul Harvey or perhaps Paul James if I wasn't 200 percent enough talent already.
    You should keep your music as is.
    But I'm on board enough .
    Yes people should give efforts for improvement to happen.
    Thanks John

    Hi John, I really enjoyed watching your review of the class. I took the class as well and didn't get very much out of it. I expressed my discontent in my review and Casey's lack of participation as an instructor on the Monthly platform. The cost was way too high for knowledge that I have already acquired making videos. I'm glad you got a lot out of it. Cheers!

    Hi John, I think you are doing a great job of presenting your videos.
    I take quite a lot of pictures of my hobby (antique engines). I find that the lighting, shadows, angles, and that thing in the background, that shouldn't be there. I feel that the content should be informative and easy on the eyes. My vote is, your doing a good job, keep up the good work. 👍🔥⚒

    Hi can i ask how you felt about his cinematography class? and what he taught for cinematography? (the 2nd module) thank you!

    • @JohnSwitzer
      @JohnSwitzer  2 роки тому

      My thoughts presented here pretty well some up my feeling for the entire class. I think I got my moneys worth out of it and definitely learned some things. Others have said that they didn't like it mainly because the peer feedback was lacking or because Casey wasn't active in the process during the class. Personally I think in both cases those are highly unrealistic expectations.

    • @Hehenixon
      @Hehenixon 2 роки тому

      @@JohnSwitzer thank you for your thoughts! But can I also ask, in terms of cinematography, did he teach it in a very film like manner? For example on composition, framing and lightings etc?

    The details of telling a story certainly increased my retention and engagement as a viewer. BTW, you continue to surprise me. I didn't know you climbed as well, or was that search and rescue gear hanging on the wall?

    • @JohnSwitzer
      @JohnSwitzer  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't climbed in quite a few years. The gear is a mix of stuff I have used and older collectables.

    i feel like the peer interaction would be the best part of the whole experience. i wish someone could make a discord server or something so new filmmakers could be apart of a community and hopefully grow a bit. i didn't buy caseys course but your video was real insightful. thanks!

      There are a few FaceBook groups I think as well as one just for the people that took the class (not sponsored by Monthly or Casey)
