👍🤠 was busy earlier. Happy Birthday. Just heard Aqushella in Pomona. Figures, I leave and NOW they come to the largest market in the country. Going to be listening to the rest of the show. My fish I regret buying is the common pleco.
Thanks for stopping by XCaliKev. I hope that you're feeling good and healthy. I'm gonna wait for the next Aquashella that is in my region. Pomona holds no appeal for me.
Hi. I had mixed results with fancy guppies. One store (Mom and Pop) recently was infected with the worst internal nightmare worms I have ever seen, (since 1980). It was most regret fish. Learned the hard way to extend time of quarantine to at least a month. But some chain store guppies I purchased a few months before that were wonderful. This is just an example of how some fish can be great or troublesome depending on different circumstances. Happy birthday again.
As always, an awesome live stream very good topic. Happy 70th birthday, Mr. Ben thanks for all you do for us fishy folks. I have to say no more common pleco they’re just too big and should be kept in a pond or a huge couple hundred gallon tank.
I have no “regrets”, but of all the fishes I’ve kept, the ones I don’t ever plan to keep again are clown loaches. My last attempt lasted four years. I had a group of seven in a 6’ long tank with pvc hides, and good water quality. At some point a disease struck and they all died one-by-one. There are so many beautiful fish to keep so I simply vowed to not ever keep them again. I feel that this is another species that should just be left and protected in the wild and displayed in public aquariums so people can see how large they get!
I had a group in Calif that lasted years, and I sold them when I moved to TN. However, to your point, I did recently lose 5 of them in a QT tank when some big box store fish introduced a disease that quickly killed them all off.
I had a Venusus that was the tank boss like you said and kept the peace within my entire peas/haps tank. He died randomly, and since then, my tank has been a complete war zone! And so far I've had good luck with dragonblood and firemouths🤞I also still have a tank full of golden auratus mbuna, but is a species only tank and everyone gets along. Thanks Ben! Good topic. Every situation is differnt sometimes 👍
I have a redtail shark. He’s mostly peaceful and is currently around 5 inches. I’ve kept dozens of them and some were aggressive, some were mild, and some were peaceful. My last one was a menace and I sent it to Everyday Fishkeeping (Dan Hiteshew) in Maryland so he has it now…. 6 months later, I got the one I have now and he’s bigger and more well behaved
In over 50 years of keeping fish one of the least loved I have had was the King Midas that was about 10 inches in size but attempted to terrorize the 300G tank and killed 3 large Severums. Luckily I traded him for 100 2 in Congo Tetras that I then sold to,LFS for $2 each 😀
I have had every fish in your list and most were put in situations that worked with just a couple,of,exceptions. So true that once you have a tank of large cichlids you can only add other large cichlids. My peacock tank is an example,of various ones that coexisted because they grew up together.
For Pleco’s that you never see. Arrange a hiding place where they feel safe and you can see them. I arranged rock work so that my L053 Three Beacon thought he was hiding and I could enjoy him. For others I use Pleco caves and have them facing where I can look in. Fish I would never buy again- wild Discus. Mine are tank raised kept at 80 degrees and I do weekly water changes. They live happily with tetra’s, Apistogramma’s, and Corydoras. No daily water changes and keeping temperature at 86. Love my Red Tiger Discus.
just doing water change and listening. The only LFS I go too has a marine biologist who is a wealth of knowledge. As far as never seeing Plecos. She says if you have the lights to do it. turn off all colors on your lights except RED. she says plecos cannot see red so they think its dark out and will come out. my pleco is out all the time so Ive never tried it.
@BenOchart whip said he was gonna take a field trip to Aquatics Unlimited when yiu are in Chicago. Lol best place every and glad it's only 50 min for me
Pictish catfish, rarely see it but when I do it is creating havoc and mayhem, thrashing the plants and smaller fish, hasn’t killed anything in two years but he is rough
my silver dollars were eating each others fins. added a bala and 2 tetras from another tank and no change. you need to add chaos and my arulius barbs added that chaos and now my silver dollar (6) are perfect inmates. lol
My planted 42 hex tank has 7 cory cats, 2 Siamese algae eaters, 6 tiger barbs and a T bar cichlids, very peaceful tank until the red tailed shark, never again

So true. Goes back to whoever is in charge of the store, or if a big chain, the fish department. Thank you for the birthday wishes.

Thank you Keith. Unfortunately the common pleco is hurting the hobby in a lot of ways. It should be sold with a warning.
Happy Bday
Thank you mossman!

@@BenOchart I was sorry to hear about that, Ben.
And also thanks for being informative and responsive to our comments. Stay fishy friends.

True. For every experience I post there are a half dozen exceptions.

I did find that they mellowed out when they got older. It was getting there without too much carnage that proved to be the challenge.

I once owned a Leporinus. Beautiful fish but what a terror to my community aquarium. Was so happy when I gave him away.

I've kept large groups of firemouth cichlids in a south American community tank. With Buenos Aries tetras and Cory's with good results.
Pictish catfish, rarely see it but when I do it is creating havoc and mayhem, thrashing the plants and smaller fish, hasn’t killed anything in two years but he is rough
Had a group of cardinals with my large discus the cardinals slowly got eaten off
Well, that gives me pause, LOL! Maybe my discus will be in a discus only tank?
@BenOchart Ben I have a small group of Congo Tettras and a couple of Altum angels with my discus
my silver dollars were eating each others fins. added a bala and 2 tetras from another tank and no change. you need to add chaos and my arulius barbs added that chaos and now my silver dollar (6) are perfect inmates. lol

I have a snowball pleco and i never see him either
