To all viewers of our live osprey camera, Atlantic Security Inc. would like to respond to the many comments we have received regarding the great horned owl attack on the nest on Sunday July 9th in the pre-dawn hours of the morning.
We were alerted by email early Sunday morning that an attack had taken place and that one of the chicks was injured. By 7:00 am four security company employees were communicating to review the footage and decide what steps should be taken. We know that climbing the nest is traumatic for the mother osprey as well as the chicks, and dangerous for our technicians. If you watched the video please note the strength and force with which the mother osprey, talons extended, hit the owl.
By 10:00 am that morning we had two wildlife veterinarians view the situation and because of the HD camera image they were able to assess the severity of the injury to the chick which suggested a broken wing. It was determined that if we removed the chick from the nest and drove it to medical care some 45 minutes away, it would most likely have to be euthanized.
We also reached out to our contacts in Kenya who handle injured wildlife on a regular basis, as well as the US Fish and Wildlife Service for advice on whether or not any action should be taken. By 1pm the decision had been made, with input from all of our resources, to simply let nature take its course.
Unfortunately, soon thereafter, the injured chick fell out of the nest into the water and died.
We received a great a great deal of mail and comments chastising us for not helping or rescuing the bird. While we share your concerns regarding the osprey chick, we must point out that it is not “our” osprey nest, it belongs to the osprey. It is our camera which allows us to follow the lives of the osprey.
While it is natural for many of us to try to step in and help wild animals when they are injured, we need to realize that events like this happen all of the time. People often tend to interject anthromorphic (human feelings and emotions) values into wildlife situations, particularly helpless, “cute and fuzzy” animals like nestling ospreys. Factors such as sibling rivalry, disease, predation, weather, limited food resources, etc all play a role in whether a bird survives during this critical period of development. It should be noted that survival rates for young osprey during their first year is between 50-60%.
Webcams such as ours are valuable educational tools which show the daily activity that occurs in the nest. Unfortunately not all events are easy to watch. Such things as predator attacks are part of nature and will continue to happen whether caught on camera or not. Some viewers will use this resource and footage to study and learn about wildlife behavior. For those who find the footage unpleasant or difficult to watch, we advise to discontinue watching.
While it was not easy for us to stand by and let nature take its course, we really could not intervene. It is possible that the remaining chick learned a valuable survival lesson from this event. Of no less importance is the fact that it is a federal crime to handle any migratory bird protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the penalty of which is a fine of at least $15,000 and a minimum of six months jail time.
We encourage all viewers to continue watching the nest cam and continue learning about these avian icons of the Chesapeake Bay. While the nest is primarily empty at this time, we have observed the remaining chick perfecting its flying and fishing. We look forward to the return of the osprey next March.

Oh dear, you have gone to a lot of trouble to pass the blame for your sub-standard decision onto others, and to chastise the many viewers who are justifiably unhappy with your lazy choice not to intervene, accusing them of being overly emotional. Probably the most patronizing accusation there is.
Here's a useful lesson for the future. When you must write paragraph after paragraph listing as many reasons as you can find to explain why you didn't follow a certain course of action, and when you list as many scapegoats as you can find to divert the responsibility away from yourself and onto others then you can be sure it is yourself whom you are trying to convince and not others. Next time just do the right thing. The right course of action never requires long-winded explanations or scapegoats. It always stands strong, supported sufficiently by the integrity that surrounds it. Next time just do the right thing or alternatively pass the responsibility to the kind of people who will.

Anybody chastising you for letting nature run its course is acting a fool. These ospreys grow up by 'torturing' fish every single day--they cannot live without 'murdering' multiple fish every day. It is so ridiculous to then get upset when an innocent owl needs to eat and settles on osprey for a late night snack. Good on you for making the CORRECT DECISION to allow other animals to eat and survive, too. Don't ever feel bad or pressured to intervene on behalf of people who don't respect the 'red in tooth and claw' nature of...nature. Once again, you made the right call. Feel good about that. Though the loudest cries come from those who disagree with nature's rules of engagement, be sure that most of us appreciate the decision you made is the correct one, and congratulate you for doing so. Keep up the great work you do for this ecosystem, regardless of 'who' gets eaten. Let us all remember that one day this particular owl and every other animal presently alive in the world will themselves be eaten, and it is a natural end for all living things. I am certainly not celebrating an ospreys death--and I know there many people who grow attached to these beautiful birds and there is nothing wrong with feeling bad, and having a sense of sadness and loss when an osprey they've been following is eaten and killed, or killed and eaten is a natural and understandable reaction. Suggesting it is right to 'allow' ospreys to eat fish is commensurate with suggesting it is right to 'allow' owls to eat ospreys, or that it is right to 'allow' ospreys to kill owls to protect themselves or their wee osplets.
      Thank you, Dan Wagner. 👍✌

@@VictorHugo-xr1ng Thanks for chiming in. Nature isn't always warm and fuzzy; sometimes it seems cruel on the surface. However, when you step back and realize that living things have largely remained in balance for millions of years, it's quite humbling. (That balance notably includes us for our short time here as the apex predators as well...)
Mother Nature knows how to take care of this world, and there is literally nothing we are capable of doing, even with our magnificent technology that can change her plan. If we ever manage to somehow unbalance the world, Mom will adjust. Trust and enjoy the ride.

Wow. The ignorance here astounds me.
You all do realize that Owls are predators, right? That they eat meat, right? They don't have the luxury of choosing vegetarian options because their digestive systems are designed to process meat and bones and not much else. And as injuries can spell death, of course they're not going to attempt to take out a full-grown osprey. Owls--and other predators, are opportunists, they're going to go after the safest thing that they can so as to minimize risk. And they're not hunting because they're evil, they're hunting to survive. Chances are that this owl has their own clutch of chicks that they're trying to feed.
You also all realize that Ospreys are predators, too, right? Just like owls. Yet I don't see any of you crying over all of the fish that the parent ospreys killed to feed their young.
This is basic knowledge, stuff you all should have learned in elementary school: In order for something to live, something else must die. If you profess to loving nature, then you must respect the survival adaptations that these creatures have evolved to possess.
    Hypocrites, all of you!
Nature isn't some Disney movie where everything always works out for the best. The animals in these cams don't have protagonist armor. They're wild animals! This kind of stuff happens all over the world, but you only care because you happened to click on a UA-cam link.

    Hello Dear!
Greetings from Korea! I am a production staff at MBC, a major television network in South Korea. My team produces a weekly 1-hour program, "HAHA Land," which looks at the relationship between human and animals from various perspectives.
In an episode to be aired in May, 2018, we are planning to focus specifically on 'wild animals'. While searching for related references, I came across this videos.
Would it be possible for us to use this video this broadcast? or can I use it when the other episodes with related themes? Of course we'll record the source of the video.
Thank you in advance for you assistance. I look forward to your reply. Thank you :)

The illumination is infra-red and well beyond the range of birds' vision. Raptors can generally only see the red spectrum to about 700 nano meters of light, and the illumination is around 900

Owls push as far as they can get away with. To make a kill, they get on the preys back and chew their head off. This process takes a bit, so they don't kill that fast. In this case the adult osprey responded just in time, as the chick didn't have the typical torn up neck. I've seen GHOs do this to ducks, and it's not pretty. They'll tear the head off at the base, then leave it if it's too big to haul away. Chicks are a good small meal for them, so they take them away. I'm not sure if this chick had any neck wounds, but if so they need to be treated ASAP. I think ospreys just eat fish, so they don't go around killing young chicks to feed themselves. But, most other birds of prey do eat not only others but their own (as do Ospreys). Hard to watch, but I imagine it's all part of the education purpose of nest cams.

Hope baby gets rehab and will be able to fledge and live a long healthy life in the wild!
