Released: 1988

--------------------------------------------------
"Fuck tha Police" is a protest song by American hip-hop group N.W.A that appears on the 1988 album Straight Outta Compton as well as on the N.W.A's Greatest Hits compilation. Written shortly after the group was harassed by the Torrance Police Department, the lyrics protest police brutality and racial profiling and the song was ranked number 425 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Since its release in 1988, the "Fuck the Police" slogan continues to influence pop culture today in the form of T-shirts, artwork, political expression, and has transitioned into other genres as seen in the cover versions by Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Dope, Rage Against the Machine, and Kottonmouth Kings (featuring Insane Clown Posse).
"Fuck tha Police" parodies court proceedings inverting them by presenting Dr. Dre as a judge hearing a prosecution of the police department. Three members of the group, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and then Eazy-E, take the stand to "testify" before the judge as prosecutors. Through the lyrics, the rappers criticize the local police force. Two interludes present re-enactments of stereotypical racial profiling and police brutality.
At the end, the jury finds the police department guilty of being a "redneck, white-bread, chickenshit motherfucker."
The song provoked the FBI to write to N.W.A's record company about the lyrics expressing disapproval and arguing that the song misrepresented police.
In his autobiography Ruthless, the band's manager Jerry Heller wrote that the letter was actually a rogue action by a "single pissed-off bureaucrat with a bully pulpit" named Milt Ahlerich, who was falsely purporting to represent the FBI as a whole and that the action "earned him a transfer to the Bureau's backwater Hartford office". He also wrote that he removed all sensitive documents from the office of Ruthless Records in case of an FBI raid.
In the FBI letter, Ahlerich went on to reference "78 law enforcement officers" who were "feloniously slain in the line of duty during 1988" and that recordings such as those produced by N.W.A. "were both discouraging and degrading to these brave, dedicated officers". Ahlerich did not mention any N.W.A. song by name in the letter, but later confirmed he was referring to "Fuck tha Police".
In 1989, Australian radio station Triple J had been playing "Fuck tha Police" (the only radio station in the world to do so) for up to six months, before being banned by Australian Broadcasting Corporation management following a campaign by a South Australian Liberal senator. As a reaction, the staff went on strike and put N.W.A's "Express Yourself" on continuous play for 24 hours, playing it roughly 360 times in a row. It was revealed in 2005 that the scratch sound from that track was sampled for the Triple J news theme.
On 10 April 2011, New Zealand dub musician Tiki Taane was arrested on charges of "disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence to start or continue" after performing the song at a gig in a club in Tauranga during an inspection of the club by the police. On 13 April, Tiki told Marcus Lush on Radio Live that the lyrics often feature in his performances and his arrest came as a complete surprise.
In 1996, during massive opposition street protests in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, "Fuck tha Police", along with Public Enemy's "Fight the Power", was continually played for two days on a Belgrade American-funded radio station, B92.
Dr. Dre makes a reference to this song on his 1999 single Forgot About Dre from his 2001 album with the line "Who you think brought you the oldies, Eazy-E's, Ice Cube's, and D.O.C.'s, the Snoop D.O. Double G's, and the group that said 'Motherfuck the police'?". He also made a more subtle reference to the song in his single Still D.R.E., where he states he's "Still not loving police."
Kanye West alludes to the song in his single "All Falls Down", "I say 'fuck the police', that's how I treat 'em". "Cop Killer", a song by Ice-T's metal band Body Count, also contains the lyrics "fuck the police", as does "Still No Surrender" by Bone Thugs N Harmony.
The Game references the song in his song, "Doctor's Advocate" off the album of the same name, expressing his shame of leaving Aftermath and going into a fight with fellow rapper and former labelmate at the time 50 Cent: "I'm not askin' you to take my side in the beef, But you told me it was okay to say 'Fuck The Police.'"

Yup
Believe it or not we studied this song a lot in College. See, here in a Philippine University, HipHop was one time offered as an elective subject. I signed up initially thinking that HipHop is glamorized Gangsta Music. Some signed because they were dancers. But actually we learned a lot of the African American history by listening to HipHop songs. Their art is considered contemporary not just because it was ruling the airplays, but because if you truly listened to the lyrics it was mirroring the realities in their communities which the majority does not pay a lot of attention to. In a way, you can say that this is in fact protest through Art, which has been done a lot historically. What is amazing is that we did not realize, how many of the realities and injustices happening in the black community mirrored ours. Especially now. We do deal with police violence also. Since the War on drugs, anybody was just a walking target for corrupt cops.
This song is also in the school curriculum in the UK. I first discovered this whilst learning about black history in history class when I was 15.
Woah! I'm from the Philippines and never heard about this til now. Which university did you go into?
@Ironheart73 Would you suggest someone try to learn Filipino history by listening to P-pop?
@@lolKbgTgm6621what Why not? it is contemporary art. We have been studying societies evolve through art.

We need more music like this. Stuff that tells a story and such. It gives such a strong message and an interesting story. Nowadays hip hop is just rappers using random words in hope that it rhymes.
Nowadays One Are Terrible. But This One (N.W.A. - Fuck tha Police) Is A Strong Hip Hop With Very Strong Message.
@@yaraihanboo hoo there are so many good lyricsists tgese days y'all just love the nostalgia
Lyrically, this isn’t the best song. I’m guessing Dre and Ice Cube would be embarrassed by it if you asked them now. The first part is good, but the rest is just so-so, compared to something like The Chronic album. But the message is still as relevant as ever. Pigs are still white supremacist, ego-maniacal mother-f*ckers on a power trip. F*ck tha police.

Man, Ren's voice is so badass
I was detained and thrown on the ground by random police officers while I was having a seizure because they saw that I was a person of color and thought I was acting funny, despite me telling them multiple times, "It's okay, I suffer from epilepsy and get these every day. All I need are a few minutes and I'll be okay" and they still threw me down and shoved their knee on my neck while going through my pockets.
I deal with epilepsy as well & while I haven't had that experience I've had doctors & nurses say that they would restrain me if I didn't cooperate....ummm yeah I'll get right on that as soon as my brain decides to cooperate!
I got threatened with Punishment while in police station today if i said something wrong. I was not the suspect of the case.... Im White and Live In Norway too bru
I’m so sorry. That must have been so terrifying :( #FTP for real
The guards of pharaoh. They're pretending to not understand or know anything. Just like orcs.
You were having a seizure and you were still able to tell them you had epilepsy? Hmmm.
i did a case study on this a few days ago and i can see how it used to be seen as controversial, however i think this also portrays a really important message about prejudice and sterotypes.
This stopped being controversial once the public finally figured out the truth about police and got rid of their brainwashing by movies and tv shows like law and order, that falsely portray cops as some sort of tough, brave superheroes that protect them from dangerous criminals.
I saw a lot of police brutally in haris county
Then they want u to feel sorry for them when they get killed
We out number them if we join together we we can change the way they treat us
I love history blacks we're winning when the military jump in and bars only black houses u ask me to bomb my own race u do it your self kkk
After 30 years, this song seems more relevant than ever. NWA RULES!
Many years later im still vibing to this song while doing work
I don't know if anyone noticed this before but throughout this classic song's lyrics are subtle nods to NWA's dislike of the police.
Are you sure? That might be a huge leap to the conclusion.
I got pulled over for playing this song next to the police at a traffic stop 🤣
We're past diplomacy with these tyrants; Violent/Draconian/Unyielding and Police are known Sex-Offenders (If approached by a Cop your Life is in Danger, Act Accordingly!)
