  • Scott Walker's message to David Bowie for his 50th birthday, 1997. As you can hear, he was deeply moved. "I see God in the window!". I love the way Scott says 'on the other side of midnight'.The uk's radio 1 special broadcast featured Bowie hearing questions from other music artists. Apologies for the poor audio quality!

I already liked Scott Walker for his brilliant music, but now I really love him for making David Bowie tear up like that. Man. Tributes are great and all, but it is even better to say how much people mean to us while they are still with us to hear it.

The amount of class and humanity in this video is honestly overwhelming. Especially coming from two of my own idols. Wow.

I love Walker's voice. It's very pleasing to listen to; I love how he articulates his words.
And hearing Bowie get slightly emotional like that is very touching.

Yes Scott had amazing diction, every word was crystal clear whether spoken or sung. So rich and resonant too. Bowie also had a pleasant speaking voice. I always felt it sounded very gentle.

I remember listening to this 'live' on the radio.
David was really knocked out, by Scott's tribute.

I had the good fortune to hear that live. I was as gobsmacked as Bowie was, and Bowie's reaction is the best radio I've ever heard. Pure class as musicians, pure class as men, both of them.

Bowie lost for words. Tx for posting this. Maybe Bowie owes Scott too back in 60's positions reversed.

Oh? Scott Walker shares my birthday? Been meaning to check out his music, especially when so many say Bowie's latest stuff is reminiscent of his work...

+Tony Martin Latter stuff is genius. From Climate of the hunter onwards he took a real change in direction. Its VERY, VERY DARK.

I disagree with Postnein. I think Walker's later stuff is twaddle. And really boring. I recommend his first solo stuff - particularly 'Scott 3', 'Scott 4' and 'Til the Band Comes In'.

I have followed him since 1965 and it's all good. His writing follows a path from the beginning to the end.

very cool, thanks for posting this, i'd not heard it before, very touching indeed. yes both our heroes are humans albeit exceptionally creative and in DB's case dashing and stylish beyond words, still humans though. i first saw DB on his station to station tour i was a teenager and somehow got up close to the stage and although he doesn't recall that year as he was deep into his addiction at the time i certainly recall it, as do many others, changed my life, the impression was that strong. thanks for all the memories DB and thanks for the intro to Scott I'd of not known of his amazing existence if it weren't for DB.

„Hi David, this is Scott Walker. I’m coming to you via a very crappy old hand-held tape machine so, I hope it’s all right. I’m gonna be a devil today and not ask you any questions. I’m certain that among the many messages, there will be those about how you always embrace the new and how you freed so many artists, and this is of course true. Like everyone else, I’d like to thank you for all the years, and especially for your generosity of spirit when it comes to other artists. I’ve been a beneficiary on more than one occasion, let me tell you. So have a wonderful birthday. And by the way, mine’s the day after yours, so I’ll have a drink to you on the other side of midnight. How’s that?“
Moved by this beautiful message, Bowie responded: „That’s amazing... Oh, I see God in the window. He really got me down I’m afraid. I think he’s probably been my idol since I was a kid. That’s very moving. I want a copy of that. I’m absolutely… That’s really thrown me. Thank you very much.“

Shame Scott was not as benevolent and public about the death of his partner that made him and the Walker Bros. so successful.. The late John Maus Walker.

if you don't love both of these men, you live in a post modern, musical dystopia of pro-tools, laptop pop and the Cowell. I'd love to tie a Coldplay fan to a chair and play them Clara (from the Drift) or the entire Berlin trilogy.

I can assure you it is genuine. It was part of a show on BBC Radio1 hosted by Mary Ann Hobbs. Bowie biographer, David Buckley refers to it in his book "strange fascination" pg 466. Other messages for DB came from the likes of Bono, Neil Tennant, Brett Anderson, Placebo and many others. I have it all on cassette somewhere and im happy to upload it if i find it. I saved this clip at the time to pass on to a friend who happens to be the biggest Scott Walker fan i know. She knows it aint bullshit.

What a brilliant, honest moment of mutual love and respect between two of the century's greatest artists. I'm stunned. The further we go into the 21st century and beyond, the more the musical period between 1960-2000 will look more and more like a miraculous aberration.

'Nite Flights' was a wonderful song, covered stylishly by Bowie, that introduced me to Mr Walker and his fascinating artistic vison.

Scott Walker is THE artist that Bowie (and all of us who consider ourselves as creative) really deep down in our hearts want to be. Mind you Bowie does some great impressions, he is the best simulacre around and the champion of all us auto didacts. He's not God but he is an uncanny reflection- the mirror for which we search.
