Sonic 1 + Sonic 2's mechanics + Sonic 3's characters + Sonic CD's sound-quality = There goes my wallet!
There are some Sonic 3 mechanics there too. ;) The elemental shields, movable objects to find hidden special stage rings, and there is even a monitor from Knuckles Chaotix in the game too! Not too many people probably know that, since Chaotix was released on the 32X and we all know what happened to the 32x... The blue ring monitor comes from Chaotix.
And minibosses. I'm so glad they brought those back.
Sonic 3 and CD level design.

This is VERY different from Sonic 3 level design . Sonic 3 was linear and flat, the only exceptions being Hydrocity and Carnival Night 1.
I'm almost 30 and I feel like a little schoolgirl watching this with excitement. I have been waiting since 1995 for the proper follow up to my favorite video game of all time, sonic 3 and knuckles. I'm not completely convinced, considering how many time sega has let me down in the past. Still, this looks fucking GOOD. Who is making this game?

you should try sonic generations, 1/3 of it is exactly what we crave, sonic 4 never existed in my opinion this is what sonic 4 should have been XD
Remember that the previous bullcrappery that was the Nintendo only Sonic games, weren't made by Sonic Team or Christian Whitehead.
Sonic Unleashed and Generations got the same treatment this game is getting, so be sure it won't disappoint.

Well, considering the people behind this game and their previous works relating to Sonic, I think the excitement is justifiable.

The real Sonic 4 IS Sonic CD.
Sonic CD is more like 2.5 (because it's the game that came out right after Sonic 2)
Also when counting each game individually there's 5 main classic title (1, 2 ,CD, 3 and finally S&K)
But There's the Genesis trilogy (1, 2, 3) and the Death Egg trilogy (2, 3 ,K)
Finally Sonic 4 is already a thing, nothing can change anymore about it (Sonic 4 episode 1 and episode 2 (+ episode metal) ) But i would have liked to see what episode 3 would be like because of the progress episode 2 made (seriously i believe if episode 3 was out and be a decent 2D Sonic game there could have been a Sonic 4 complete with the same engine and graphisms as ep2 so we could have a true Sonic 4)
PS: Do not forget the Advance and Rush serie also counted as "true Sonic 4" (seen on a comment on a Sonic advance 1 music)
Conclusion: Mania will be a new spin-off/ Sonic 5-ish game

Hey, guys! Nick Robinson here from Polygon. I wanted to write a quick comment to go alongside this video so that y'all would have some context for what this footage is when we post it!
Yes, this is the same Sonic Mania demo one of our editors went hands-on with at the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party a few weeks ago. However, for that video, the embargo required that the video be edited and have some sort of editorial commentary over it.
Fast-forward to today: I finally got the chance to get my own hands on the game myself at PAX West, and I thought you guys would appreciate this slightly different take on the demo - one where I took my time, explored both stages much as possible in the time alloted, and then give you the video completely unedited and without commentary.
So yes, while these are the same stages you probably saw in our video last month, this really is all-new gameplay - and I stumbled onto a couple of cool new things in my playthrough.
This weird, semi-redundant video isn't the type of thing we normally do, but I really do believe that Sonic Mania is shaping up to be something extremely special, and I thought you fans might appreciate this extended look at it. I hope you enjoy this video, and if you have any questions about my time with the game, feel free to ask! I'll keep my eyes on the replies to this comment and reply to as many as I can. Thanks!

Man, this game is shaping up to be incredible. I knew they added some new stuff to Green Hill, but I had no idea they were going to add as much as they did. That entire underground area feels like it could be it's own level separate from the normal area, it's that big. Studiopolis looks fantastic too. The level design, music, gimmicks, and theme are all really good. If the other Zones in the game are as good as Green Hill and Studiopolis, Mania might de-throne Sonic 3 & Knuckles as my favorite video game. I'm excited.
I spoke to the producer about that - she said they're designing every level so that it has a substantial upper, middle, and lower path! I'm super excited, too. -Nick
My favourite 2D platformer of all time is Sonic 2 and I also have a soft spot for Sonic CD though I know it's divisive. This seems to combine the best elements of both games. Unless somewhere along the line they really fuck up... I can't see how this game isn't a straight 10/10 when judged on the merits of what a Sonic game should be.
+sausagesausage Only way I can see this game being messed up is a poor balance of new and old levels or too short of a development time. Given SEGA is giving most power over the project to whiteheadcannon and pagoda, I find those scenarios unlikely.

Both Generations AND Sonic Colours turned out to be excellent games. However I wasn't all that optimistic until after release when I actually played it... Before them we had a trio of really bad games Sonic 06, Secret Rings and Black Knight were all absolute garbage. The late 00's are like the Sonic series' dark ages. May it never return.

Sega knows that players are going to be zipping through stages with super sonic speed, but the purpose of this video was to showcase the different level designs and choices Christian Whitehead did with the old/new levels. Hence why he slowed down to show the audience what's new in the game, like Greenhill zones underground portion

As someone who was born in 1997 and grew up playing every single Sonic game on my brothers' old Genesis, I FINALLY feel like I'm witnessing something amazing happening to the Sonic series. It fills me with deep nostalgia and excitement.

One3rdNinja Yeah, that was really surprising, it's taken a very _Sonic CD_ style in terms of stage construction (although a little more coherently).
Maybe they'll re-introduce some missing zones from Sonic 2 Beta, like Christian did with Hidden Palace Zone on the iOS remake?

This looks like something that could have been on Dreamcast, and in some aspects, the Saturn, and that's a beautiful thing. The Dreamcast was the last time Sega felt like Sega. Seems like they are finally trying to bring back the old Sega look and feel from back then. I always wanted them to use the consoles after Dreamcast to continue what they had with that system, but they never did. Here's to hoping they can use the Switch to finally get their act together and show the newer generations how awesome they used to be.
True. Sega began failing hard ironically around Sonic 2 due to the strained tensions between the west and east dev teams. They just didnt like each other much and it sent ripples htorugh the ocmpany. Sure we had Spinball, then 3 and S&K which had that great lock on feature, but they should have forgone the cd choice, and just made the 32x with more company support and bigger game library. PLus if they had then expanded it, like the Nin 64 did with the rumble pack, or just straight up made the Saturn as Segas sole Cd console, but itself 64bit instead of 32, it woulda been cool too. Oh what could have been...lol

I am so impressed by the attention to detail going into this. Even stuff like letting the blue channel linger during that fade-out right at the start, or the exaggerated distortion in the Mode7-style effects. It really feels like one of the classics. Imagine if other companies made the best out of fan-game development like this.
I got SO HYPED when the boss music came on! And in Studiopolis when Sonic turns into a silhouette behind the window... It's absolutely stunning!

The Xavier Fans Well, sonic 06 was really bad, same for sonic free riders and sonic boom. In sonic boom, theres an infinite jump glitch where you can skip most of the game. And all 3 are so glitchy its borderline unplayable.
However, Mania looks a lot better.
SilverHunterN I don't think Free Riders is entirely at fault. It's mostly on the Kinect. Give the game a PC port and it would be just as good as the rest of the Riders series if not better.
Mania looks a lot better because they have Christian Whitehead working on the game. If you have been paying attention to the Sonic scene, he's the dude that made the remakes of the classic games with his Retro Engine, which has Sonic running at a GLORIOUS 60fps.
Studiopolis reminds me of Collision Chaos from Sonic CD.

Talk about nostalgia. I used to go through Green Hill Zone as a kid and collect all the rings. When I saw the new areas my eyes lit up. I can't wait!

It's because rolling can be used to build speed and momentum. Also because rolling puts you into an attack state, so it's safer in certain situations.
You actually gotta do that in the classic games unless you want to run smack into a enemy, at least till you know the stage layout by heart.
Plus you gain a lot of speed from rolling

As soon as Green Hill Zone came onto the screen, the widest and most genuine smile appeared on my face.
Sonic 1 was the first game I ever owned as it came with my Sega Genesis 25 years ago. Sonic Mania is looking great, and it will be fantastic to be able to have my kids grow up playing Sonic too.
Studiopolis Zone from Sonic Mania should be a New Sonic Stage for the New Smash Bros. game for Switch.

Adolf Hitler It's not terrible, it's just fairly average and a bit dull. And I had a lot of issues with the level design and music in episode 2. The Tails stuff was flow breaking and annoying. But my real issue is it's called "Sonic 4" but its gameplay really isn't anything like Sonics 1-3. Rolling and momentum play no part in the gameplay when they were the most important parts of the old ones

I hope this one does well........I think those secret areas for the large rings that aren't there as of yet will take you to the special stages that came out in whiteheads earlier video....which people thought were bonuses in a future sonic 3 and knuckles for Iphone.

Studiopolis is just... wow. Incredible music, beautiful stage - it reminds me of the three "fun" zones from the classics (Spring Yard, Casino Night and Carnival Night) with a bit of Oil Ocean - and the little gimmicks are actually pretty neat, especially the satellite dish warps and the silhouette segments. This may just edge out Casino Night to become my new favorite zone.

I absolutely love the fact this game seems to use sounds from all different Sonic Games. Even at 10:02 you can hear the teleporter hole sound from Sonic Spinball!

Well, it's actually made by Christian Whitehead, who created the Retro Sonic engine, and by Headcannon, which is owned by Stealth, the lead creator of Sonic Megamix. They also remade Sonic 1 and 2 for Android and iOS devices.
So Sonic Mania is kinda fanmade, but also being published by Sega.

I seriously hope Sega puts this game out on the previous PSN/X-Box Live as well. The PlayStation 3 and the X-Box 360 aren't exactly dead yet.

It's great to see sonic and mario going back to their roots. hopefully we can get a mario maker style game for sonic.
This is definitely a step in the right direction for Sonic. I like the simplicity and feel of the classic games, and this game really reminds me of that. I'm excited for this game!
I know this is 5 years ago but I still need to state my opinion. I wish that Sonic Team would just delete every 3d model they have and continue their franchise with the classic 2d. It's way better than 3d and with the simplicity of it we don't need a huge story since the team is, well, bad at making them.

I'm getting this one on day one. I will always remember when I brought home a Gen and played this back in 92. I became an instant Sega fan. It had great replay value.
