Put a light in your coup, chickens dont lay much do to less light days in winter, so put a light in their coup to trick them with longer day light an they will lay more in winter if you want.
Why not let chicken's lay eggs during their natural cycle. You wouldn't expect a woman to give birth 3 months after giving birth to a child...so why force chickens to reproduce outside of their natural production? If they give you eggs 200 days out of 365...why push their limit to to 300? You can't satisfy multiple women 200 days a year...so why should a chicken?
The coop was always open to the green house so cold air was able to come in. Both the coop and the greenhouse are southern facing so they get lots of sun and warm up during the day. As long as the chickens stay dry and out of the wind, they can handle cold temperatures without a problem.
For the whole winter, how many times were you cleaned out the straws/hays. Hay/straws VS wood chips, which ones you prefer the most in your expertise... Thanks. Kevin
Before the greenhouse I had to clean them every 3 or 4 weeks in the winter. Now I can go more like 6 - 8 weeks between cleanings. I prefer straw for the coop floor and wood shavings for the laying boxes. The straw is easier to shovel out but the shavings keep the eggs cleaner. Thanks for watching!
