      Yup, he’s right. Total distance (5 miles to the tunnel + 2 mile long tunnel + 1 mile long train) is 8 miles, so at 80mph, it would take one tenth of an hour, or 6 minutes. At first I kept hearing that the train was going 8mph, so I was thinking it would be 1 hour.

  • @chrishull6665
    @chrishull6665 3 роки тому +717

    Penn Charles is right. At 80 mph, 1 mile takes 45 secs. The back of the train has to travel 8 miles (1 + 5 + 2). 45 sec per mile means 9:06. Good job.

    • @angelag.hunter9679

      If the train was stationary at the station it would need x amount of time to accelerate to 80 mph. If it was passing by the station at 80 mph, then PJ's solution would be accurate. Your Axl Rose is on point. Hilarious!

    • @jonathanmattox6060

      @@angelag.hunter9679 correct. we would need to know the mass of the train, initial velocity, slope of track, and more. so I'd go with the train is already going top speed on a level track and passing by station as a starting point. LOL. spot on!

    • @McBehrer
      @McBehrer 3 роки тому +28

      @@angelag.hunter9679
      Sure, but that is not implied by the wording of the problem. (or at least, it is not considered relevant)
      The way it's worded, the train left the station GOING 80 MPH. Meaning it was already going 80 MPH when the train left the station.
      If it wanted us to factor in acceleration, it would have said "the train left the station, accelerating at a rate of X MPH^2 until it reached its maximum speed of 80 MPH."
      It works just fine as worded.
      Good try though.

      One of the other issues I have with advanced degrees in the sciences and a lot of education in math, linguistics and literature is trying to figure out what my son doesn't know yet. If you don't have a lot of experience in education (or are picking up their education mid-year as happened in 2020), it's just a constant "Why aren't you getting this?? ....Ohhh...you don't even know what a noun IS...ok, yah, that's important."

    • @Lodinn
      @Lodinn Рік тому +2

      @@ladygrndr9424 Worse yet, if someone experienced has come up with a syllabus you could kind of just trace that and see where the problem is... Explaining things from scratch is a nightmare, there's no end to getting sidetracked.
      Kids also ask the hardest questions ever, as they're not burdened by preconceptions.
      Step 1: What is cold fusion?
      Step 2: Sounds cool, why don't we have it yet?
      And whatever advanced degree and academic accolades you may have go right out of the window. It really helps professionally to have that educator's perspective but boy is it hard...

In school I hated Algebra, Word problems, and the only reason i took chemistry because it was a weighted class so my C's and D's would be a point higher. And yes I made D's I know those don't exist anymore in alot of grade scales and you guys missed writing subjective essays where you had to write a 2-3 page essay and I could only find enough information for 1 page....😖😔😡 yeah yeah My English teacher used to always give me C's on those probably because she felt sorry for me but again I'm in my 50's so school curriculum has drastically changed in the last 30 years.🤣

    Tunnel is 5 miles away, tunnel is two miles long. In order to leave the other end of the tunnel, the back of the train has to cover 8 miles qt 80mph

    • @SchvennMeister
      @SchvennMeister 3 роки тому +3

      You're assuming and rightly so, that based on this math problem geared towards an elementary grade student, that they were implying that the train was already going 80MPH when it "passed" the train station, not left it, or that it averaged 80MPH on the entire journey, because if the train had to accelerate to 80MPH first, then you have to add a presumably logarithmic increase of speed for the time it takes before it hits that speed and that gets really complicated and well beyond my math skills.

You could argue that the train would have passed through the station already at speed, and while I would agree with you I'd also add that it is unnecessary information to what was asked. These exercises are generally teaching the relations between speed, time and distance, not trying to get into the unnecessary physics of the question.
