Answer: Pressure. He’s crumbling from pressure placed on him by himself, Red Bull and the fans.
People were thinking he could challenge Max. He believed it. As time went on he felt like he had to overperform more and more to make up for each previous mistake.
On top of that, Red Bull are ruthless. It doesn’t help matters when you’ve got mentions of Daniel, Yuki and Lawson constantly being talked about as replacements.

Checo had 15 minutes to pull a clean lap... he has a Red Bull, he didn't need to risk anything on those last 2 corners.
As for the pressure you are absolutely right, no other teams talk about changing drivers half-season like Red Bull and Alpha Tauri. I don't think it's a good practice at all and only adds pressure to struggling drivers.

nah he himself put the pressure on him, no one thought he'd challenge Max over a full season, not RB, not the fans maybe himself but over a full season there is no way Checo can challenge Max. As a Max fan i think Lewis is really showing his talent and why he won as many titles as he did. Sure the car was OP, as is Max's this year, but time and time again both drivers seem to make it look easy whilst their team mates struggle, make mistakes and don't consistently extract what they should out of the car. I think both Perez and Russell are similar in that they can overdrive and get 101% out of average cars, but once the cars are top of the crop, the cracks begin to show with mistakes and pressure mounting

"I think both Perez and Russell are similar in that they can overdrive and get 101% out of average cars, but once the cars are top of the crop, the cracks begin to show with mistakes and pressure mounting" That doesn't make sense to me tbh when looking at where Perez has been on the leaderboard these past few races. A great car will be faster than an average car when driven hard, obv. And a great car will also be sympiotic with the driver and not as unforgiving as say the Haas in 2021. Otherwise we would see Max slipping up as well, since even he makes mistakes. Two weeks ago he almost binned it. A lesser car would surely have been sent into the barrier.

Look at what happened with Gasly and Albon. They got eaten up and spat out before they could prove themselves worthy. Same would happen with whoever else they put in that seat.

Matt and Tommy didn't mention it here, but can we talk about Alex Albon? He has been outstanding this season. Another Q3 session for him and he has looked fantastic in that Williams, kudos to them for the upgrades as its been massive for them.

I really want Norris to become Red Bull’s second driver. I know thats just a fever dream and most definitely will never happen, but i can just imagine it.. Also i just want Norris to finally get outta McLaren and move up into a better team😂

Checo's gonna stay. Though he's struggling, his role suits the way redbull works as a team. He's not really challenging Max and he's also picking up points. Both Championship covered.

Pretty much. He's been in a slump, although his last lap time in Q2 was fractions away from Max's, but in any case what they've been able to accomplish with him is what they always wanted with Albon and Gasly.

Sometimes I wonder if Haas has 2 different cars. One for qualifying and one for the race. Last year, Mick got outqualified by Magnussen but beat him in the race (based on positions, not points). This year, Magnussen gets outqualified while he and Nico are currently equal in race finishes (4 both although Magnussen DNF'd twice)..

Yeah he signed a 2 year contract extension around Monaco last year I believe. By the end of the season there is potential they could buy him out like McLaren last year did with Ricciardo or they could demote him to another role within RedBull like when they demoted Kvyatt. Either way I see Checo finishing this season.
