I worked and recorded with Herbie for quite some time, and was always amazed at how he could draw so much out of one note and improvise endlessly on a single chord change. Miss him!
Een geweldenaar waar ik sinds 1958 voor het eerst kennis mee maakte met de langspeel plaat Toot Of The Fluut en nu dankzij You Tube en trouwe luisteraar !
Herbie Mann was phenomenal. I first discovered him while living in Madrid Spain way back in 1976 and my Spanish boyfriend introduced me to his wonderful jazz music. Herbie Mann was a pioneer and a master jazz flautist. I wish I could get my hands on his live Newport Jazz concert 1972. I have the vinyl LP.
There is an entire generation who will not know what it is to squeeze into some small smoking club sitting at a table with people who were only put there because there was no where else for them to sit. And listening to someone make live music just like this. Being in a place where you could touch the musician but you were too busy swaying and getting into the sound. God I miss jazz clubs.
I was thinking this exactly. Reminded me of two clubs in Detroit circa late 70's early 80's: Baker's Keyboard Lounge and Detroit Playboy Club. Best Jazz in Motown.
ofcourseitsfaye I spent alot of time in Far East during the 90's, I frequented such a joint in BKK near Victory monument called the Saxophone bar! It was alive 7 nights a week with superb music and terrific food. I hope in the next life I get there again.....
My band teacher suggested him to listen to so I could get a better idea of jazz music. Because my band and the jazz ensemble play completely different music and I've signed up for jazz band... This is incredible
It was my honor to meet him once. He was a NYC rude kind of jazz legend. Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Pete Christlieb, Cecil Payne, Gary Burton, and many others were so nice, however.
Bye the way I knew Bobby Hebb personally. He and I worked for The Massachusetts Highway Department in Boston and believe me he was the coolest cat who ever lived!!!
(From WIKIPEDIA) "Sunny" is a song written by Bobby Hebb.... Hebb wrote the song after November 22, 1963, the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and Hebb's older brother Harold was stabbed to death outside a Nashville nightclub. Hebb was devastated by both events .... Hebb has said about "Sunny": "All my intentions were just to think of happier times - basically looking for a brighter day..."
#SmoothJazz
@LordNekromurderer .. story goes with the song: Hebb and his older brother performed as a song-and-dance team in Nashville, beginning when Bobby was three and his brother was nine. On November 23, 1963, the day after John F. Kennedy's assassination, Bobby's bro was killed in a knife fight outside a Nashville nightclub. Bobby was devastated by both events, he wrote the song as an expression of a preference for a "sunny" disposition over a "lousy" disposition.
Can you believe it - james bond theme reference is a reference to something before it. :D Basically what "james bond" is, is a certain series of chords, that received a label, that a portion of us agreed to believe. So basically, what ever music you hear - there really is no artist (tho im not certain of the First meaning of the word "art"). There is no person/artist that the music belongs to. She/He/they just happened to channel that from somekind of "Great one" somekind of artistic soup-pot.:)
Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain. Sunny, you smiled at me and really eased the pain. Oh, the dark days are done and the bright days are here, my sunny one shines so sincere. Oh, Sunny one so true, I love you. Sunny, thank you for the sunshine bouquet. Sunny, thank you for the love you brought my way. You gave to me your all and all, now I feel ten feet tall. Oh, Sunny one so true, I love you. Sunny, thank you for the truth you've let me see. Sunny, thank you for the facts from A to Z. My life was torn like a windblown sand, then a rock was formed when we held hands. Sunny one so true, I love you. Sunny, thank you for that smile upon your face. Sunny, thank you for that gleam that flows with grace. You're my spark of nature's fire, you're my sweet complete desire. Sunny one so true, I love you. ; 7 D Lyrics taken from PhoneLyrics

I'm trying to find out who played the melody on Barnaby Jones. I KNOW it's Herbie Mann but don't know what kind of flute he was playing. Do you know?

Cornell Dupree's guitar just makes you feel good! His album Bop N Blues is an absolute gem.
My band teacher suggested him to listen to so I could get a better idea of jazz music. Because my band and the jazz ensemble play completely different music and I've signed up for jazz band... This is incredible

enorme musicista inspiegabilmente sottovalutato.
It was my honor to meet him once. He was a NYC rude kind of jazz legend. Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Pete Christlieb, Cecil Payne, Gary Burton, and many others were so nice, however.
To me Herbie Mann and Bobby Hebb are American Masters because they perform so well together.
Bye the way I knew Bobby Hebb personally. He and I worked for The Massachusetts Highway Department in Boston and believe me he was the coolest cat who ever lived!!!
Pretty cool getting to work with Bobby Hebb...that must have been awesome. I love listening to him, especially sonny. Thanks for sharing the story.
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 73yo Aussie fan.
Everybody calls Larry Carlton "Mr. 335" but Cornell Dupree was the first cat i heard on one that made me buy one.

Martin Arnold
That would be Eric Gale, Richard Tee, Marcus Miller, Steve Gadd
ivanoe, thanks.
true and smooth . just like a 24K diamond bullet straigt between me eyes onto a blue/jazzy brain . . .

Bobby Hepp, From Memphis, Tennesse. Please, take a look of the James Brown's live version of this tune: awesome!
