Polishing Agates - Part 2 Final Polish

  • In this video, we finish up the agate we started a couple videos back. The purpose of these videos are to show ways to polish stones with the tools you have. I could have easily sat in front of a $2000 cabbing machine. It would have been a wondrous event. Those are OK I guess....... It doesn't provide a starting point for someone just beginning to work with stones though.
There are many directions to go with lapidary work once you get a basic idea of how to grind, shape and polish a stone. Perhaps you want to make jewelry. Others might want to try their hand at creating sculpture.
The direction you take with your lapidary passion determines what kinds of tools to shop for. This is the main reason I suggest people spend some time trying many different kinds of lapidary work. From gathering raw materials through faceting or cabbing the gem material, new rock hounds can find out where they like to exist along that continuum.
I used a Dremel tool in this video. Any reasonably robust rotary tool of any brand should work. There are several different types of sanding bits. Each circumstance will require a different approach and maybe a different bit. I prefer using a cutting disc for my shaping work. You may prefer a grinding wheel. It's a matter of preference determined by trying different methods.

I love your approach in these videos! Sharing what you know as “A way” to work our specimens, not presenting as “The right “ or” best way to do it. You make learning inviting and accessible! Thank you so much for your contribution to learning this new art form!

I have enjoyed your videos, both part 1 and 2. It brought back memories of when i first got into crystals. I colected about 15 or 20 5 gallon buckets. I had alot to practice on, its been 5 years now and i came far ways. I had stopped for some time and realized i miss it. I now am in the process of getting all tools i need to make my crystal jewelry, no, i dont sell them but i give them away. Sounds strange but... the crystal tells me whom they belong to, more a feeling, guess its the empath in me. As you are one also, thats why you feel connected to nature, crystals especially. Anyway, i wanted to say thank you for reminding me how much it ment to me how important this is to me. I enjoy working with the crystals i find and seeing that my effort and heart i put in my work put a smile on a strangers face and a little light in their day. I just smile back and remind them how powerful a little kindness from a stranger can be.
    Again, thanks,
    Whitewolf

Appreciate you taking time outta your busy/working schedule to share this kind of detailed education !! Super inspiring. If you can still find time to invest in these kinds of projects in between the 9-5 then so can I !!! And you’re out here editing and filming an entire video on top of it. Congrats man !! I’m taking notes. Tired of letting my job suck my soul away lol I miss connecting with the things that make me happy. I wanna make stuff !! I wanna collect stuff !! I wanna learn and expand and grow !!! This video definitely helped me feel better, love seeing you achieve such beautiful results with such simple and inexpensive tools - gotta stop making excuses - when there’s a will, there’s a way !! Thank you so much

It's not easy, but it's important to show that even basic home tools can get the job done. Things have been busy this year. I'm making 200 mile round trips to the doctor, running a business, and trying to get content out. Hoping to get into some serious lapidary projects this season. With any luck, I'll be booking more local contracts. That's the way of things when more than one pay check depends on me getting business handled. ;)

I think learning how things are done with simple tools make you a more skilled artist when you have enough confidence to buy specialized gear to get what you want out of the stone.

Thank you. The 2 videos in that series are about using what you have to polish a stone. We all know there are compounds, and tools that can make the task much faster. I wanted to concentrate on thing around the house that allow the novice to experiment and decide if lapidary is a hobby for them before purchasing more refined equipment. Our hobby can be an expensive one if you don't have a foundation in basic smoothing and shaping. We're just trying to get people to explore their potential, and maybe encourage the next great revival of semi precious stones in North America.

I have a beautiful piece of carnelian agate, that I have been wanting to rough polish for the longest time, but I have been so scared to mess it up, because I have no tools, not even a dremel or a whetstone, all I have is wet sanding paper. But I am so scared I will mess the stone up. Do you think sand paper alone would be enough? You have been giving me a bit of courage, but I am still scared to do it. Or should I wait till I can get a dremel? Thank you so much for this video. 🌸🌸🌸

You might have been using the wrong type of sandpaper. The drums I used are for stone and glass. The idea is also to use a light touch. It a slow process usually.

I'm on the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. About 50 miles from the California Border. Most, if not all stones we gather come from what is called the Wild Rivers Coast. These are a series of mostly inaccessible rivers that flow through the cascades and coast range to empty into the Pacific Ocean. I'm a little partial, but I moved here 10 years ago because I think it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet. ;)

The idea of the video is to give a beginner the confidence to try. America used to be a Lapidary giant. Every aspect of lapidary from lamps to intaglio.
I present videos with wisdom for many levels of interest if you listen close enough. I know I'm dry in delivery. It's intentional to hide Easter eggs of wisdom. It's all intentional. I'm a really nice guy with a gruff shell who imparts bits of lapidary wisdom in a way that isn't pretentious or conceited. You may also notice I never endorse brands. I'm big on doing what feels right for you. I want folks to be interested in a way that inspires art from their cultural understanding. Thanks for watching ;)
