I'd add that if it wasn't exclusionary (and largely inaccessible for people who aren't rich or have commitments), the foot traffic would probably turn exotic locales into crowded dumps overnight. Tourism porn reduces complex locations into postcards*. In a lot of exotic locales, you'll have swathes of westerners treating the people and place like a playground, often while impoverished guides or resort staff fantasize about murdering the wealthy foreigners. So there are worse things to be than bored.
* There are nations that are popular tourist destinations but which have rampant child labor and substantial human trafficking.
He'll be depressed in 5 years when the money runs out and the memories start to fade. Whereas you and I have a whole world ahead of us to look forward to :)

I genuinely think this one of Cody's best videos. He's using his platform not only to make people laugh but also to make them feel okay about themselves and their normal lives. It's like Jameela Jamil calling out people who promote weight loss products and unhealthy beauty standards. A buddy of mine in college did it. He bought camera gear with some money from his parents and he would travel (again on his parents money) maybe twice or three times a year. On those trips they didn’t relax. They literally only took cool pictures. Day in and day out. Then he would post those pictures intermittently throughout the next year. It made it look like he was all over the world but he really lived in the Midwest and vacationed three times a year. He also wouldn’t tag the locations each time he posted so it wouldn’t look like he uploaded from Michigan. He would say he was in Hawaii at some beach when he was really in his dorm posting pictures of a Mexico vacation from months before. Allllll smoke and mirrors.
yep. i've been friends with an "insta model" and every time she wants to get a photo it is an absolute MISERY for everyone involved (including her). she makes it look like she's having this glamorous life, but really we're eating take out and doing nothing 24/7 and then every once in awhile she makes me stand in the middle of the street to awkwardly take her photo. it's not fun.

As someone who does travel permanently (as a journalist), I can vouch for the fact that unless you are a trust fund baby you will be living pretty rough 90% of the time. There is also the very, VERY obvious fact that if you have the luxury of travelling at all, let alone full time, you are from a very privileged minority of the world. When you go to a developing country and take photos of their blue-ass water maybe take a moment to look around and see what that water means to the people to whom it belongs, the citizens of said country. Remember that you are damn lucky to be experiencing their water, especially since 99% of them will never be able to do the same with yours. Remember that by selling an ideal to your audience using their water you are exploiting their resources. Remember that your passport gets you visas, not your intelligence or any personal achievement. Remember that the wealth of your country gets you the income needed to go on your eat-pray-love adventure, not hard work. I say this as someone for whom all of this is true.
Thank you, thank you. I travelled to India a few years back and I saw so much sadness and poverty, dirty babies being bathed in dirty water, stray animals with ribs sticking out. People wearing plastic garbage bags as clothing. When I’ve tried to speak out on these things- I’m called a liar. People that travel want you to believe that traveling is magical 🌈. It’s not. Quite honestly at this point I find the idea of traveling the world a bit obnoxious. Most people refuse to see the reality of other costumes and paint their travels as something everyone else should be jealous of.
Hell right now Hawaii is begging tourists to stay the hell away because the locals are being forced to ration water just so the luxury businesses have as much as they want for all the tourists. Hawaii started to do better during the lockdown when people aren’t able to travel and be tourists as much and now it’s struggling immensely.

I love the final message in this video, it's really important to remind people that social media content is curated, staged and retouched. Even for people who are legit travel influencers as opposed to just trust fund kids, most of their time is spent dealing with the brands they work with (usually hotel chains), and certainly a hellscape of immigration bureaucracy for all the countries they go to. It's not a constant vacation, it's a job and much like other entertainment jobs, we only see the fun parts by design.

Yeah i used to see FART videos and posts and just be like why can't I do that?!! But I've learned to accept my life and where I'm at and know that either you're born into money and can do whatever or you work hard and save and you can do whatever. I'm glad it helped you a bit. Good luck at Uni!!

I don't think it's negative or cynical, he's just using critical thinking to see through a lot of bs. Most of these people have no wealth, they have sponsored contracts with companies to sell you shit, and in return you get to use their jet, rent a house, etc. It sounds great even put like that, but what happens when you're 35, the kids don't want to watch you anymore so the sponsors have dried up, and you have no life skills? Also, there's a great Japanese philosophy I truly believe (from experience) that says essentially that a life of leisure without contributing to the world around you basically burns up the human soul.
