  • The Clunies-Ross family ruled the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean for more than 150 years. The last 'king', John Clunies-Ross, was a feudal leader who walked the islands barefoot with a dagger in his belt, and had total control over the lives of his Cocos Malay workers. His reign ended in 1984 when the islanders voted to fully integrate with Australia, and Clunies-Ross went into exile in Perth, broken and impoverished. But for this program, John and his wife Daphne agreed to return to the Cocos for a moving reunion with the islanders. This is the story of a remarkable pioneering family whose Scottish ancestors first settled this remote island paradise.

    without social media we would not have learned of this family and the people of the Cocos Islands. I wish you all the best, wish I could visit some day.

    I love this, mixed feelings about how this guy was ousted, it was probably for the best, but at the same time it seems he tried to be as humble as he can be, and the fact that he didnt force people to change their faith is a great thing, shows that he and his ancestors before him weren't bad people. in our religion the prophet peace be upon him said what roughly translates to "be merciful with a person of status who's dropped to the bottom from the status he had, and a rich man who's become poor, and a man who has knowledge who's found himself between ignorant people"... they are Australia's only indigenous white family, and those Malays are Australia's first non-Aboriginal and Torres strait islanders Indigenous community

    They migrated to Sabah, Malaysia in 1960th for looking for better life. Now the number of Malay Cocos is approximately 5000 people. therefore they outnumber the remnants on Cocos island. hence they won't return to Cocos island anymore

    Somehow the Clunies-Ross family reminds me of the Brooke dynasty in Sarawak (a large Malaysian Borneo state that is east and south of Brunei). They both are Europeans in independent micronations ruling over Asians, respected the local customs, gave freedom of religion & treat their subjects with care. The major differences are: the Clunies-Ross family never declared themselves kings of the Cocos Islands whereas the Brooke dynasty declared themselves kings.

      I'm reading this because both of my families were under the Brookes and the Clunies-Rosses. I have Iban and Cocos ancestry.

    The Clunies-Ross banned Christian missionary to convert the local Malays whereas the Brooke dynasty encouraged the Christian missionary to convert the Sarawakian natives to Christianity.

      Maximise5...if those people were converted to Christianity, they would not embrace Clunies-Ross clans with forgiving hearts. Natives who convert to Christianity do not forget and forgive their former masters just look at the blacks and natives in America, the aboriginals in Australia, the blacks in South Africa and other African countries...

    Sad the things Australian government did. I would be so upset if I was him. I would have tried if I was one of his kids to make enough money to buy the family house back if that bloke would ever sell it.

    John Clunies Ross still has the attitude of a dictator, that he has all the correct answers for running that Island community. I don't agree with the slave labor conditions, but at least the Clunies Ross family gained power through economics and not military conquest.

    That's his familys land then. If it was uninhabited and his family claimed it then it's his. Those Malays surely should just be grateful that this family brought them there. Im quite certain they wouldn't want to go back to Malaysia. They're more than happy living off Australias welfare benefits.

    • @nazimabdulrahman9238
      @nazimabdulrahman9238 8 років тому +2

      its not his land and no the cocos malays were not happy to be treated as slaves given plastic money amd being sheltered off from the world, in fact there were a large number of cocos malays that moved back to malaysia, get ur facts right and dont be racist

    • @latesukiyaki
      @latesukiyaki 6 років тому +5

      Will walker your ignorance indeed is disgusting!
      1. These people were treated as slaves. No slave will ever thank his master for bringing him to a new land. Otherwise you should tell the African-Americans that they should thank the white people for brining them to America! How stupid is that?!
      2. These Malays were brought to Cocos BEFORE the formation of Malaysia as a nation! So they predate Malaysia and you want them to return to a country that they do not even know???
      3. Many of these Malays actually went to Malaysia and settled in Sabah for good. What can Australia offer that Malaysia cannot? Malaysia is at par with Australia's development or even more. You just claim to be part of the developed nations because of your skin color!
      4. And welfare? Tell us exactly how much they receive per month. These people did not receive even a penny when Australia took over the island while the clan of Ross received millions! So you are saying that these people who are Australians by birth should not receive any help from Australian government? Considering what they had gone through all those years???
      5. The gratitude of these Malays, even though they were treated as slaves to the Ross clan is pretty obvious. Look at them, embracing and chatting and even preparing a feast for the Ross family as if they are one big happy family. The forgiveness in their hearts could move anyone with a decent humanity, but I guess you are not human because you could not even see it!
