  • It's pretty nasty on the inside. The outside isn't so great either. Let's see what we can do about it.

The first frame I knew you had a Heath Kit transistor tester. I had built the earlier model, it was in a brown case. It worked very well. A friend of mine bought a large and very heavy 24-Channel Analog Mixing Console (1990s), Lots of transistors to be tested. I gave him the Heath Kit. He moved everything from North Carolinian to Nashville Tennessee. He had a recording studio in Nashville for many years.

I bet it was really handy back in the day. Can't imagine how many transistors were in the console as I remember a Hi-Fi stereo system we had when I was a kid was littered with transistors on every single board, with the exception of a radio tuner IC and the power amplifier module.

Heathkit frequently took older models and reissued them in modernized cases, new paint/color schemes and newer looking knobs as "new" models. Usually, these updated models reused the original model number and added a prefix such as you see here.
I built one if these back in the day, but found it to be practically useless due to its design limitations. For seemingly every transistor I tested on it, leakage just pegged the meter left, and the Beta nearly full left....the meter scaling was so nonlinear that it rarely gave useful readings.

      Thanks for the additional info!
I've come across some posts online of others that would take these and modify them to work at higher battery voltages so they could get better results. I don't know that I intend on doing anything crazy with this one, but it seems that as-is, it can at least be used to tell if a transistor is somehow bad or not, but that's about it.

I would sand down to bare metal spray painted put on a water slide decal go over it with some lacquer

I didn't realize water side decal paper was a thing! I thought it was something you had to have custom made. Thanks for the suggestion!
