    You've done wonders for the NZ Tourist Board. Been seeing you go to lots of places I went to in 1995 and in the main they are unchanged and stunning. So 2021 I'm going back but taking three mates with me this time. Will arrange for a friend in Wellington to source us a car before we get there (we all prefer to have a Holden). Seems more expensive there now compared to 1995 when exchange rates were more favourable.
    Thanks for your car tests-who cares what order they are in, as I am still catching up on your tests going back a few years!

    Drove a Jensen Interceptor along with a Jaguar Mk2, E-Type Coupé, a tatty MGB and an entertaining Ford Capri Mk3 2.8 with no brakes. A 50th birthday present from my wife. The company is called the Great Escape based in Reditch. Always wanted to drive the Jensen and E-Type, must be a toy car thing. And they didn't disappoint. Wonderful cars, think the Interceptor was car of the day. Funny how some of the fellow motorists complained about the Mk2's heavy steering! Hope all is well.

    Very informative as always, nice that you feel comfortable discussing your plans openly and some really interesting live questions, answered as always with a balanced and fair reply.
    Your bit on Fords did make me laugh though because I share your views exactly. They aren't special enough to warrant all the attention and prices they command. As you said for every Ford model, there is always a better alternative from another manufacturer but those who worship the oval badge just can't see beyond the blue tinted spectacles.
    Like you I'm not anti Ford, they're acceptable and do a job but I see them as no better than anything else produced by a middle of the road manufacturer.
    FIAT has always been my prefered brand from a young age. Back in the 80's Ford biased friends of mine wouldn't entertain one
    Fair enough that was their opinion but they were always amazed when my £300 Fiat 127 Sports were pasting their 2 grand Fiesta Supersports. They moved onto Mk2 Escort RS2000, so I spent half what they did and got a 131 Sport. 1 extra gear, no cart springs and a Twin Cam to propel it way in front of their pride and joy.
    In came hot hatches, so XR3i/RS 1600i or RS Turbo was their must have holy grail whilst I plumped for a Strada 130TC Abarth. Once again even with forced induction, the RS Turbo was no match for a Fiat Twin Cam with its roots in the early 60's and a huge pair of twin Solex/Weber carburettors.
    After that we all calmed down, got married and bought family cars but even after being beaten all hands down on 3 evolutionions of the cars we grew up with, the Ford boys still failed to see their cars were half as good and twice the price of the equivalent FIAT.

    Wow, I've driven a car Hubnut hasn't!! I actually owned a diesel Metro; a Rover Metro 1.4CD L reg (1994) in dark blue. Actually a pretty reasonable car and pleasant enough to drive. 60+mpg and a reasonable amount of torque. By no means a performance car, of course, but quite a relaxing drive. Like all Metros it handled well, the weight of the engine not seeming to make a difference to that. I sold it before the inevitable tinworm struck, as it did with two earlier Metros I owned.

    In the late 80s driving in Melbourne was almost a free for all. Speeds in excess of 100 kph were common on city streets. The hook turn was a measure of engine size with smoke rising from intersections when the lights changed.
    However in the early 90s it all changed with one of the harshest campaigns on speeding. It was a complete overreaction, now days people drive with their eyes glued to the speedo to the detriment of the most important part of driving, looking where you are going.
    The UK seems to have a better ballence between enforcement and lowering the skill of the drivers.

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 4 роки тому +1

      @hobo john on the freeways and around the cities nobody speeds at all in Queensland I drove at 5 percent (GPS) above the limits on the freeways (still far slower than I am used to driving) and I did not get any tickets but I was the fastest car on the road.
      When you get 4 hours inland its a different story. I was passed by a number cars. Speed traps are often set up in and near the edge of towns and mobile radar in the opposite direction on the highway.

    • @Mercmad
      @Mercmad 4 роки тому +1

      Itall began to unravel when Jeff Kennet became premier of Victoria. An avowed car nut ,He owned a Merc 450SEL 6.9, He and his 'advisers' realised that Victoria as a state had no income thanks to the labor sell off of anything moveable. The state was receiving some income from state imposed sales taxes but not enough to keep anything going. So in a typical Australian political move they found that by taxing motorists they could reap billions.Tax? it's called traffic fines. Coupled with the fact that victorian speed cameras and the courts are "privately owned". A recipe for oppression and it works in true socialist fashion where you can be accused of a breach of the law but have no means to defend to yourself .

    • @chubbyroyston3880
      @chubbyroyston3880 4 роки тому

      Don't you believe it we have average speed cameras everywhere now

    • @andrewthompsonuk1
      @andrewthompsonuk1 4 роки тому

      @@chubbyroyston3880 at least with the UK average speed cameras you can concentrate on the road and not the speedo needle. They give a very reasonable grace factor. In Victoria they hide cameras everywhere with no grace factor at all and the limits all feel far to low. This makes driving totally boring and you end up giving the speedo more attention than the road. The other factor that plagues Australia is the limits are continously changing, like a corner will have a lower limit that's far too low for a car. This has the further effect of diverting your concentration from the road ahead to the speedo.

Not only can solo travelling get a bit lonely at times but it's also expensive and you have to work everything out by yourself. However....boy, can it tiring after a while, and you just want some time to be alone and independent.
    The thing I miss most about living in Oz is the people. It's very difficult to explain to people in the UK exactly why, and of course there are good bad and indifferent people in both places. A friend reckons it's because Brits look for problems whilst Australians look for solutions. It's a lot more complex than that, but it's a starting point.

    I believe the reason NZ has more Peugeots than Renaults and Citroens is that they (used) to have a tax system which favoured British built cars. When Peugeot took over the Rootes/Chrysler factory they qualified as "British". I remember my cousin coming over from NZ and meeting him at Heathrow in my day old 405 and he was over the moon as he was now able to buy one in NZ without being crippled for tax.

    That speed discipline here is mainly due to the insanely-small leeway given to motorists. Police have never taken an interest in me at less than 10 km/h over, but the car-mounted ones (usually a Captiva with a bull bar) are set to ping you at about 5 km/h over and, with a safety margin, the infringement notice arrives in the mail alleging as little as 2 km/h over. Red-light cameras often do double duty as speed cameras. Hopefully you have not left a trail of woe with your testing! ;-) If only they policed lane discipline with such attentiveness, but that requires people, not devices, and contradicts the message put out that once you exceed the (somewhat-arbitrary) speed limit you instantly become a public enemy.

    Great work Ian, I thought when you first announced your trip that it will be very tiring and not really a holiday. Oh well you have the oh so relaxing trip home soon (not) farewell.

    Hi Ian I'm going to push the boat out here and say your perfect 6 cylinder car with a plushy ride would be a Austin embastardar preferability in BL beige with brown velour interior. I seem to remember my history teacher Mr Burbage had one like this and made a lasting impression on me.Namely it was only four years old at the time seemed like it had spent a long time under the sea and had saggy suspension and always seemed to scrape evey speed hump up the school drive for about a mile so we knew when he was coming
    and often he had the bonnet up anywhere and everywhere and often swore when we mentioned it in class .When observing the engine and counting the the spark plugs one day when he had given up to have a Benson and whisky coffee we were amazed such a feeble car could have a transverse six and be and look so crap in 1988?

    • @JohnDoe-ox5ni
      @JohnDoe-ox5ni 4 роки тому

      Why dident he buy a mk 2 golf or a mk 3 escort ? Well his dress sense made the case for the austin really .His brown velour jacket perfectly matched the seats and so did his track suit brown with the beige stripes when he was the referee at footy.He was a man of the 70,s and looked like Michael Fish so a golf would have been like a Tesla but cost the same?

      Sadly the Amabassador was never available as a six-cylinder.

      @@HubNut I guess I dident know my spark plug from my dizzy back then .after I messaged you I thought I'd check I'd got my facts right and no .you are right I was wrong .But however when doing my research I discoverd a golden gem .Check out John Shuttleworths Austin Embassitor song its a classic .Iv also searched in vein for the ken Dodd rover commercials from a dealership. legendary apparently but iv never seen them?it makes you you wonder why they. Couldn't shift them?

    Referring to the background picture of Ned Kelly's armour, I still find it strange that Australians continue to hold a murderous thug in such high esteem! Imagine going into every pub and souvenir shop in the UK and being met with Fred West memorabilia!

    Enjoyed that Iain! We don't mind a slower pace of the videos - get a sustainable work/life balance.....the only burnout we want to see is from some aussie muscle! haha
    Didn't know the Rover 100 and Peugeot 106 shared the same diesel engine. I ran a 106 1.4D and 106 1.5D as company cars back in the day. I can report the 1.5 was better than the 1.4 by exactly 100c! - whodavthought?

    On the subject of sound problems, to me the volume seems to be on the low side, I often have problems hearing what you saying on both my laptop and tablet. I think the problem mostly occurres when you are recording in areas with background noise. There is no background noise in this video and the volume doesnt seem too bad. Cheers.

    • @HubNut
      @HubNut  4 роки тому

      The main issue is the external mic was dropping out, at which point the camera really picks up background noise and wind noise especially. That drops out my speech then.
