I am a Frenchman, member of the French Memory. I often bear a French flag by the commemorations. And believe it or not, if I have so much empathy for the soldiers of WWI (no matter their nationality), it is mostly thanks to this kind of songs. They could have been sung by any soldier, no matter his side. I just find that the German songs convey better the tragedy of the soldiers than the French ones. It is the same with the German novels about the war : none has moved me as much as 'In the West, nothing new", from Erich-Maria Remarque. If only one novel about WWI should be read, it would be this one, as far as I am concerned.
Used very effectively in the NSBO scene with ROL Doctor Robert Ley and Reichskanzler Hitler inspecting the boys in Leni Riefenstahl’s ‘Trumpf des Willens‘.
