Thanks for the video! Just a quick tip for replacing the battery on HRM-TRI. Place the new battery backwards, remove and install in the correct position. This fixes issues with pairing. Also never tight too much the screws, specially the top right one, because of an issue with the plastic structure, it can crack, water can come in and demage the sensor for good.

A feature I find really useful of pairing a chest strap (non-Garmin apparently work as well) is to record breathing rates while exercising. Some Garmin watches will use that to automatically detect your lactate threshold and update whenever you do a workout that changes it. Very useful to find your zone 2 and keep it constantly updated.

@@catalin5218 If you pair a Forerunner or some other Garmin watches to a chest strap you will be able to do a guided workout to determine your Lactate Threshold. Once you do that your Garmin can update it every time you go above it and it detects it. Of course you need a chest strap every time. What I do is wear a chest strap when I do intervals or threshold runs. For tempo or zone 2 I don’t wear it as you don’t go above your threshold.

I use a Polar Verity around my upper arm connected to my Forerunner/ Edge and have never had any issues. I switched to an optical sensor because my chest strap sensor continuously over-read - it used to give me an average HR of over 200 for activities. A friend of mine who was a doctor explained that some people’s hearts can give off additional electrical pulses when working hard (there was a medical term but I forgot it) which confused chest HRMs that counted it as an extra beat. I was put through some tests while connected to an ECG machine whilst wearing my HRM which showed that it was over-reading at when I was working hard. That was back in 2013, so chest HRMs may have solved this now; but, the optical one works for me and I am. It tempted to spend the money on a new chest strap just to find out.

I had the hrm pro plus and it started to ooze this bad stink after a week of use, all cleaning procedures followed, vinegar, detergent, light soap, sun treatment and nothing worked. Garmin replaces the unit just for the problem to resurface again. Garmin refunded me and I discovered that am not the only one. Many are commenting about that on garmin page. Those might have leak that is causing that. Don’t have this problem on any of the other heart rate belts.

I bought the HRM-Pro Plus a few months back and use it a lot i.e. running, swimming, but I mainly purchased it to track HR for Jiu-Jitsu & MMA. It's been great for those types of activities, without wearing a watch. I only wish that I could log that data to an activity in the app. The only work around is to create an activity and manually input the data from the HMR-Prp +
But regardless, it's still a great device.

Still have an original HRM run 1st generation module, strap is long since gone. Never understood Garmin's production of straps and modules that can't be separated. Read about loads of people, getting their HRM's replaced after they begin to fail, after a short period of time, particularly after a battery replacement.
Bought Polar's H9 strap, when my Garmin module finally started to be unreliable and replaced its strap with a Polar pro strap. I'd probably get a Dual strap if I did return to a Garmin HRM and combine it with a Polar pro strap. I don't really need all the extra analytics of a Pro, as my 255 will give me Power on the wrist.

Use for ciclyng and running, and eventually on a triatlhon race I use for swim. I don't know why that's happening, I changed the battery exactly how you show but I'm still having problems. I will test Polar H10 and I hope it will live longer.

Des, great content - as usual!! I had HRM Dual and also purchased HRM Pro (paired w/Fenix 7X). With the HRM Dual I can calibrate (e.g. override) the treadmill distance when running indoors on my Fenix 7X. However, with the HRM Pro, it does not allow for "calibration" when running on the treadmill. In your example, the data was pretty close - but that is not always the case. Therefore, I tend to use the Dual on the treadmill, and the Pro outdoors. When traveling - I take both. Crazy, I know. So what do you do? Do you rely on the treadmill data (for distance) or the HRM Pro? Thanks again for being such a great resource! (PS Still loving my Fenix 7X thanks to you!)

I'm looking for a video on how to read the graphics or data that is download on Garmin connect after training (jogging , walk or cycling) with the HRM Plus. Can you make a video to explain how to read the graphic or data that is add to the Garmin connect after a run or other trainings using the HRM Plus (white)? Also, from what I did understant, if I go for cycling, I must activate my watch (Garmin MK2i) in cycling mode so at the end when I stopped my watch and save the information, it will download all info from my HRM Plus to my watch? For the graphics, I'm not sure what it mean or how to read the info from the graphics. Thanks Alain, Montreal, Canada

Hi Des, great informative video thanks! Quick question, at about 8:50 you talk about recording HR information without the watch. Does this also include if you're working (i.e. not a recognised activity)? I'm a Firefighter and have often wondered about recording some data during calls but don't like to wear my watch. If I understand you correctly would HR, HRV, Resp Rate, all be downloaded to my Instinct 2 when I get back to station, filling in the blank from when I removed my watch?
    Thanks heaps!

    • @DesFit
      @DesFit  Рік тому +1

There's two ways this could work. If you do not manually start an activity on your watch but just wear the strap, the HRM Pro/Pro Plus would store your heart rate and steps which would then be synced with Garmin Connect on your smartphone which would then be accounted for in your daily calories. However if you did start an activity on your watch, your heart rate data during the activity could then be downloaded later when you go to save your activity (and can even be done later if need be). But with the latter, that would create a separate, timed activity and not sure how you would best classify a fire call :) For that scenario just wearing the strap and not starting an activity could be the best but totally up to you! 👍

@@richardt9692 Kind of hard to compare since the Stryd's primary functions are different than the HRM Pro Plus. I'd say that the running distance/pace feature on the HRM Pro Plus is a nice bonus but not a primary reason to get it. The pace/speed/distance accuracy of the Stryd is very good but may be up to you if it's worth the cost, which is not cheap.

I've found them to be nearly similar and use both on a consistent basis as reference units, but I've also seen occasional blips here and there with both. Very rare though. I certainly recognize that the H10 is used quite a bit in research settings which says a lot for accuracy.

One of the biggest flaws with the Garmin HRM pro is that after you unscrew the device to change the battery, it is never water-tight again. And it will slowly corrode the inside electrics. Many people have broken their HRM pro because of this

You could use the HRM Dual, HRM Pro, or HRM Pro Plus with the Strava app to record running. Fun hack, you could actually use your Edge to record your run and then just change the activity type after you’re done in both Garmin Connect as well as Strava.

Indeed top performance coupled with the absolute lowest crappy quality. Don't expect a Garmin HRM band to last 2 years without eating batteries like a Tesla (average use: 1 hr/day) and falling apart despite maniacal care: thoroughfully wash, rinse, dry naturally and never bend after EACH use.
And don't tell me it probably was a defective item, because I'm on the fourth one in few years.
I know "fool me twice, shame on me", anyway I'm still reluctant to switch to more reliable ones, such as Polar (golden standard), because I'm deeply stuck in a Garmin environment. That's my 2c ...

Sad that the straps are so poor quality. I have had my HRM-tri replaced on warranty twice, latest with an upgrade to HRM-pro, because the strap separetes from the sensor. It seems that some of the joinings are only glued, where they should have been sewn.
