DJI Mini 3 Pro Test flight ended in a drone flying confrontation with the bird lady or local Karen. This could happen to you despite you knowing the local drone laws. Have you experienced anything like this?

I was flying my mini over some marshland by the side of the road here in NY when I heard someone ask "is everything ok?" It was a police officer. I replied yes politely and asked why he asked and he said "I saw your hazard lights on your vehicle flashing and wanted to make sure you were ok". He then saw that I was flying a drone and said "those are cool and have fun" before driving off.

Hi i wish to buy a mini but am scared because of many owners reporting flyaway. Am from Ireland it's always windy & rainy here. Will the mini be able to handel winds at high altitude. Please share your thoughts. Thanks

    • @RB-gv5xh
      @RB-gv5xh 4 роки тому +5

@@jojojohn2416 It can withstand a lot of wind. Mini is a small drone, but it's pretty powerful. When you get a wind warning, decrease the altitude immediately. Also, set the return to home altitude just high enough that it won't hit anything- don't set it at 100m when the highest object it can hit is 20m high, this is because of wind- it's (sometimes MUCH) stronger at higher altitudes.

rob there's a clip on here USA of a guy flying the length of a semi discussed bridge, it's around 2 miles long.
On the way back to his car, he gets into a convo with two fishermen.
To say they are amazed as he tells them fishing conditions along the length of the bridge is a understatement :) :) :)

Very coincidental! I had my first ever confrontation just yesterday! I basically live in caravan in a field and was flying my drone in and around my caravan, over ... yep, you guessed, lots more fields. An elderly gentleman came onto the field and told me, "I have a gun and I'm going to shoot your drone out of the sky".
I said, "OK", returned my drone, packed it away and went back into my caravan ... then called the police.
The police visited this gentleman, him stating to them that I was flying over his property. I showed the police the flight path of every flight I had taken over the last two weeks, clearly showing that not only was I not flying over his house, I was explicitly avoiding doing so when, for example, returning under low battery. The police returned to him and cautioned him.
    1. Don't argue at the time. They have already made their mind up and you're unlikely to change it.
    2. Report the matter to the police, every time - this is harassment and the police need a 'conduct of behaviour', essentially a history of similar behaviour, in order to successfully prosecute.
    3. Fly legally and considerately.
*You* have the right to exercise your hobby or conduct business legally.
*They* do *not* have the right to harass you.
The arbiter is the *police*. Report it.

Let him know that you have to land for safety before you talk to him. Because once you give him your attention, your attention isn't on the drone. I was flying a Mavic Pro in the park one day and during the 'return to home' I saw in the camera a police car approaching from behind. Safe to say, my heart rate was getting high and I thought "I'm screwed!" - it wasn't even my drone. They pulled up and said, "does that have a camera on it?", I said "uhmm... yeah, it's a drone." At this point I was expecting to get into some trouble and then the officer says, "Is there any chance you can fly over that church for us? We need to check to see if some young kids are up there." - PHEWWW! 😂 That was such a close call lol.

I used to get confronted here in the USA. I always try to be polite as I too am concerned about the bad reputation drone pilots get. I found that buying and wearing a yellow safety vest with "FAA Licensed Drone Pilot" stopped this. Instead of them acting like self appointed drone police (but without any real knowledge of the subject) they see that I am there on business and leave me alone. Not every flight is related to my Part 107 license however that yellow vest has meant I have not had a single busy body hassling me ever since 👍🏻

I have also been approached by a senior man, who wanted to quiz me about flight restrictions when flying my M Air over water. I advised that my flight path did not infringe on the Drone laws, ie over water and not above houses or people etc. However this elderly man, with perhaps too much time on his hands, insisted on a full blown discussion about drone laws and the restrictions, whilst I was attempting to fly my drone. I strongly suggested that for the sake of safety, he should respectfully allow me the courtesy to return my drone without interruptions. After landing, I showed him the screen and went on to explain its control & safety features, the necessary steps when safely flying & landing and the aviation laws & restrictions. In the end, he thanked me for my time, apologised for interrupting my concentration when flying a drone and appreciated my question to him 'if your wouldn't interrupt a pilot when they are on their final approach when landing a plane, then why would think it OK to have a full blown conversation about drone laws when someone is attempting to land a drone'?

Totally agree. If you are legal, have your papers ready. When the police show, watch the antagonist deflate rapidly. Nothing like watching someone stick their foot in there mouth. Can you say to the police officer, can I file charges for harrasment? I bet he starts walking........Or bring the drone down and pack up and walk away. It's not worth it to argue with a moron!

I have had three unpleasant encounters with persons who confessed they knew the drone rules better than I. One was an assault but the police did nothing after I reported it. They all started the same way, with the person approaching me saying something to the effect what I am doing is illegal. My typical response has been, if they feel that way, they can either contact the police, or make a complaint on line with DOT. Escalation from that point is typically rapid. Odd thing is, there has never been anyone else around as a witness. These people seem to operate alone and apparently do not like to see anyone engaged in an unusual activity. I have always operated my drones within the rules and always have respect for others in my vicinity. I have made thousands of flights without a single incident.

I find it very much more easier to explain to the individual the truth... Involve them... like "here.. have a look at what I see.."
Show them it's simply taking pictures from a different perspective. Most are impressed. The others that don't see...are people only get angrier if you confront them, especially the older generation... God Bless them.
We really need to include them.. show them how ultra cool this new way to take photos really is..

I flew my mavic mini along a lake last year which was perfectly legal. Of which a policeman passed by (The lake was near their office building) He just asked how much the drone cost and was very interested in buying such a drone.
20m after he walked away an angry woman came towards me. She scolds me and says that what I am doing is illegal and she demanded that my drone be handed over to the police.
after 10 minutes of trying to calm her down, she tried to throw things at my drone, luckily the same policeman I talked to passed by and this lady went to the police.
I took the opportunity to land the drone while the lady was busy.
The police did not even ask me anything but it seemed as if the lady's request to have me punished was denied when she started shouting at the police that they should do their job followed by her walking away from the police.

I want to improve relations between the public and drone pilots, not make them worse, so I am polite even if the other person does't deserve it. Tell them that "it is dangerous to distract someone from piloting an aircraft", then hopefully they will stop pestering you. If that doesnt work - safely land ur drone and move away from your equipment and confront the man. Stare straight into his eyes and do not stop staring into his eyes and calmly say - "I know that I can fly here and I am under no obligation to tell you anything, Im going to fly my drone again here as soon as you stop distracting me. Call the ranger, call the police or call your mommy. Im not going to stop controling my floating camera here. What are you going to do?" Then keep staring him STRAIGHT IN THE EYES. Ask him what he is going to do, and if he asks you anything, tell him that you don't have to tell him anything. Keep saying the same thing, most will back down within 5 minutes, but if they dont shut up or go away. Then turn your back away from him but hold your ground, he will try and make eye contact again, but make him move around as you simply turn your body. They get infuriated at first as you are ignoring them. Then they give up.

own business or most of all enjoying themselves. :O)
For instance people that have a need to harass young people that are fishing in a pond. Not bothering anyone just enjoying themselves.
That seems to be an issue. I am 86 years old. I hope I never get old enough to have to be a pain in the butt to people enjoying themselves.

Nice civil way to disagree. Possible improvement:
I would have avoided the ill-will.
First, by understanding with the bird-watcher, nature-lover person.
Expressing I have the same concerns. That's why I'm here. And it won't take long. And why I have a right to be there. And that I appreciate him expressing his concerns and feelings. That I have them, too. And so, I use my drone with all the same concerns, how the beauty here would be ruined by the noise of multiple drones, if it were to happen more of the time than not which even half the time would be roo much (half of daylight hours). Even less than that. Even if only 1 drone. They are noisy and somewhat disruptive to the ambiance of this lovely environment.
I would say how a drone can and has become a symbol for, high tech invasion of nature zones.
Because, when we come to such places, ideally we put our phones away and disconnect from the digital world, reconnect with divine mother Earth.
So I consider you a brother my friend.
We are on the same side.
You may not believe me now.
However, now please consider if you will - because I am flying for now, 20 minutes more at most, today - many who might come here, will not actually come here.
Why? Because if I do good work today, many who may have come to visit, may feel like they already have come here, and choose not to come.
In this way I am helping the human density to be reduced here. And that is why we are on the same side. We share the same values.
    We want peace.
And I apologise for disrupting yours. However, again, I wont be longer than 20 more minutes. I will stay a respectful distance from wildlife.
After I ground this drone, I am going to enjoy the peace and tranquility. Like you.
    With you.
Help me help us, my friend.

@@RRonaK No problem. It's sad that too many "aged" people forget how much fun they can have. Thanks for the prayer offer - I will humbly accept. And I agree on the photography. The best the man could have done is ask for a few minutes to chase and photo something he has been chasing and then pass the area off for the drone. If he was first on the location only ;) Have a Blessed day!

Sorry to hear that happened to you. That will shake you up a bit. Not only were you doing this for business, you are a nature videographer too! You and he both enjoy nature. He does on the ground, and you do in the air! Thanks for your great videos. Keep up the great work!

Sounds like it might be handy to have a pair of ear protection along to throw on your head when some annoying person decides to stand there chatting away.

I've been lucky in that any of my interactions with spectators have been friendly and have served as an educational experience for those who were not familiar with our drone laws here in the U.S. I will add that you are much more patient than I am though. I would have dismissed him much sooner as he would have been interfering with my flight and therefore my business.

For just such occasions, I carry a placard stating: "I'll be happy to talk to you, but only after I safely land my drone." Most people don't realize we really do know what we're doing as licensed drone pilots and must pay strict attention to our drone operation at all times. If they did, they would'nt bother us while were flying. Moreover, They would know we only have so much battery time and need to land the drone soon anyway. I am a "nature photographer" too and use my drone camera to take great pictures of nature that can't be taken any other way. Great video, thank you very much.

That's really smart to carry the placard. When I VJ (live video projection for bands) people come up to me to talk to me but it is very distracting and I start making mistakes if I talk to them.

On one occasion a Dutch guy even followed me to see where I was living and tried to enter the building by pushing the door and shouting like a wild caveman,... Good that the cameras where on,....

I put a small sign next to me...that simply reads ⚠️ ."drone filming in progress "....this usually shuts down curiosity...😊

You didn't start with the most important questions for him: 'Who are you and why do you think you are authorized to speak to me about this, at all?" Asking those could have save you 20 minutes and a potentially crashed drone.

I commend you on your patience in dealing with this person... I could not have flown with the threat of not knowing what he was going to do! I would of landed pulled out the paperwork showed him and proceeded to call the local authorities so he was informed properly and would not act out in this way in the future... But things don't always go as planned!

I've personally found that wearing a yellow-vest with written text: "Drone pilot" helps a lot with these insane people.

That's a good idea, or if you're "too cool" to wear one and it's not Instagram friendly, then at least a lanyard or something with your pilot ID's and certificates in there looks "official".

Great video and hopefully you get more positive questions next time than Birdman's. One caveat to confusion may be that the Droneluftrum app mentions Gribskon AND Esrum lake (but it is clearly only part of the lake that is restricted as you said yourself). I am interested to hear thou, is the paperwork just necessary because you are flying as a business? I don't see anything suggesting that it should be required as a private flyer.
