He was. Probably one of my top 5 favorite actors in the show. Mamoudou Athie absorbed the knowledge so well. I am extremely impressed how much like him he became. This is actually the first time I've really listened to Grandmaster Flash and I was wondering if he was actually like how he is in the show and apparently that's true.
I binged watched the Getdown .It was awesome . I watched Flash's set at Field daze Goldcoast Australia .He destroyed the place . I would pay $150 any day to hear Flash play.
Truth! It doesn't matter how flash you are, or how many scratches you know, or how many tricks you can do...if you are not getting the crowd on the floor and keeping them there, NONE of that matters A friend of a friend saw DJ Kool Herc play a set, he was surprised how 'basic' his chops were...a few baby scratches, the infamous Merry-Go-Round, and often just slamming from one cut to another. Sure, Herc can beatmatch, but my colleague saw little of that "No one cared! The floor was jumping and everyone was getting down!"
It's about time someone got out there to show these youngster where hip hop came from and look they love it maybe now we'll get back to to roots of hip hop
We need a a Funk academy where you have Acts like Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament, Bootsy, Lakeside, Grandmaster Flash, Tower Of Power, Afrika Bam. and etc. all under the same roof teaching because the funk is not among us. And all these new cats sound the same!
Thank you grandmaster flash cool herc Grandmaster cas DJ Red Alert Chuck chillout Mally Mall Bruce e bee Kid Capri ya dig I respect the game I grew up in da boogie down Bronx
Watch and learn young grasshoppers! Also they need to make more authentic beats like that in the current era weather it be funk, disco etc. in other words “Make DJing Great Again”.
I see people on flashes other videos saying he cant touch todays turntablists, that might be true skill wise but flash has stuck to his style and was doin it way before these djs were even born. He is the godfather of decks and no one can take that away from him.
You ever see a Turntablist do a party .. Gets boring . They can beat Flash Style Wise maybe , but the First Emcees cant touch Jay-Z style wise either ... They advanced the Art , but Melle Mel doing the Message can still destroy any song out & Flash can throw a party for Anyone on earth .
My first rap album physically had was LL Cool J Radio. I was more intrigued with DJ Cut Creator scratching on the music. That made me become interested with the DJ. Putting music together creating a masterpiece. When I was able to The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash I went crazy. The DJ has always been the centerpiece. He was the leader. Leaders lead by how they put things together. You get the MC to put rhymes to a product. Today the DJ is blinded by being famous.
All those words he's saying.. I've been there... Ft Riley 1984, Germany 1987...on the 1s and 2s..i was looked at like an alien... Doing wat I did with the turntables.. Making them talk.. The Germans loved it!!! It was a ritual, music.... And I gave it to them... Whoudini, Fat Boys, Run Dmc, the McLaren Brothers... Man.. On and on... It lives forever.. Shout out Carolina Djs... DJ Pill, Scratch, Melly Mel, Beaver Gee his secret weapon was the funk box... Oh man!!! Funkmaster, Mr Cut, B Lord, Bo.. I see you Alphonso.. Gerald.. Robeson, Cumberland and Dillon County stand up!! DJ Knight....
What's wild is Apache and Bongo Rock are Blues Tracks. Basic 1,4,5 chord progressions with funky brisges and breaks. That's are versatile Blues is. Speed it up, slow it down, make it rock like Led Zep or turn it into hip hop
Yeah there was something before... I love Grandmaster Flash but you forgot about the 'Mighty' James Brown aka Godfather of Soul. Where every dj got there samples and grooves from - Remember the sound of the Funky Drummer and I Know You Got Soul?
If the SL-1200's are out of your price range then I'd personally go with the Stanton str8-60 or str8-150 two very good turntables for scratching and DJing
1200s aren’t rare at all. they’ve been made since 1979. you should be able to pick up a used pair of 1200MK2s for $600. the brand new models are hella expensive but those are geared more towards audiophiles not dj’s.
Personaly i din't know what the Get down show was about, its by total hazard that my mom who likes to watch stuff on Netflix started watching it, then i saw what it was about and that There was Grand master Flash in it! i was like "holy shit thats lit!" Just love it!
If you read his autobiography he'll tell you that he'd scrimp and save to buy parts from Radio Shack to build pre-amps & switches, and scavenge from City Dumps to pick up parts. He could play on ANYTHING because he had too!
... Why Flash dont search anothers records... Anothers breaks of the 79s...i need to listen another traks 40 years with the same breaks is not good idea...
if could get vinyls and a pair of turntables i would man, id ditch the digital crap. but carrying that amount of stuff from gig to gig, especially weddings where they ask for the new stuff, is just not feasible.

Listening to Grandmaster speak you realise how well the dude who played him in the Get Down absolutely nails it.
That guy who played Flash was awesome I loved it
He was. Probably one of my top 5 favorite actors in the show. Mamoudou Athie absorbed the knowledge so well. I am extremely impressed how much like him he became. For those of you who are wondering when he shows his "secret weapon it's actually A song by Earth, Wind and Fire - Brazilian Rhyme
SirDylanMM omfg you don't even know how long I was digging for that before I saw your comment. Thank you!
And what about the previous one? Thanks!
The song he plays when he speaks about his secret weapon though is Ralph MacDonald - Jam on the Groove: ua-cam.com/video/Wy5uXqtVRvs/v-deo.html
And what is the song at 1:15? It sounds like rappers delight but it isnt
Oh Gianni Gianni, it’s Good Times by Chaka Chan.
Man this dude is a legend!...So skill full, so influential, still kicking ass!
I binged watched the Getdown .It was awesome . I watched Flash's set at Field daze Goldcoast Australia .He destroyed the place . I would pay $150 any day to hear Flash play.
If every school had this kind of teacher... the world would be different...
When he drops in the licks from “Good Times” the young boy just starts breaking!
If you can’t make the crowd shake their derrières you’re not a dj!

Young duke was feeling that for REAL!!!!!!!
I really, really love the positive vibes in this entire video.
It's inspiring.

"Once you figure these monsters out, you must serve."
This made me cry with awe and joy and the painful nostalgia. Flash. Herc. Simpler times. Simpler joys.
Killing it on the Apache cut
Please bring back this show. 🙏

i have had the honour of seeing this legend play in London and Birmingham
I see people on flashes other videos saying he cant touch todays turntablists, that might be true skill wise but flash has stuck to his style and was doin it way before these djs were even born. He is the godfather of decks and no one can take that away from him.

“I DONT CARE WHO DID IT GREATER, WHO DID IT BETTER, WHO DID IT WHATEVER... MY CONTRIBUTION WAS FIRST, AND FIRST IS FOREVER..” - GRAND MASTER FLASH
Could this be a sneak peek at the characters' 80s versions? TJ Brown is looking especially 80s especially with his EST cut and b-boying.

Flash once said "words are like gifts, you don't have to accept all of them". Dude is a Prophet!

Flash is a LEGEND! ahead of his time, the godfather of the decks and rap, before flash there was nothing.
Yeah there was something before... I love Grandmaster Flash but you forgot about the 'Mighty' James Brown aka Godfather of Soul. Where every dj got there samples and grooves from - Remember the sound of the Funky Drummer and I Know You Got Soul?

Turntables - Technics SL-1200 (very rare and expensive)
Mixer - any scratch mixer will do (personally choose Numark M2 scratch mixer)
If the SL-1200's are out of your price range then I'd personally go with the Stanton str8-60 or str8-150 two very good turntables for scratching and DJing
