What do you think of the new Shimano GRX Di2? Let us know 👇
Kind of a tasty appetizer before the expected feast;]
2x and 11-36 only, what are Shimano thinking? SRAM xplr for me.
I think it didn't upgrade to the new Ultegra/DA front derailleur, so it still has old 105/old Ultegra/11sp GRX front derailleur. Which is a bi*** because that new front derailleur is what I was waiting for, more than 12x. Nice of you to dance around it in your presentation
Still no low gears for grx. How about a 40/24 crankset with that 11-36 cassette?
Which groupsets were the best in shimano's history? I don't care about weight but rather precision of shifting, durability, ease of service... Choose from road, mtb and gravel gear. Thanks
The coating coming from fishing didn’t really surprise me. Shimano still makes some of the finest reels and fishing rods on the planet, after all.
We should do a gravel/bikepacking fishing adventure, full Shimano equipped!
@@gcn like, going gravel bikepacking in Scotland and fishing for salmon or trout or doing fly fishing? Or some saltwater fishing along the coast?
Sounds like a (rough concept of a) video script. 😀
I was surprised because it‘s on MTB brake levers for years. Maybe they had to make the detour to fishing because of the „spirit of gravel“.
@@gcn You will catch more fish running sram
@@naskofilms4077LOL 😆
Why are the 12 speed GRX groupsets (mechanical or Di2) still officially limited to 11-34/36? I run a 11-40 SLX cassette on my GRX 11-speed with 46-30 chainrings. I still get enough gears for higher speeds/flats, but more help on steep gravel ascents. This should be the standard!
so is 11 speed... but you can fit even 42 in there, issue for me isnt what on spec sheet but if it works, and for 12 speed there is no 40t or 42t cassette, only 45t and that will be maybe too much?
@@VeselenyiVlado I agree, it‘s important what works! My local bike shop even checked it and installed it flawlessly. A friend runs 11-46 on 1by GRX without any issue either (11-42 is max per spec). I still think the spec is stupid. I have not checked for 12 speed cassettes yet since my bikes are 11 speed 😉
Couldn't agree more. I'm a big dude with hills around me. I need low gears for climbing, but I also don't want to spin out at 20 mph.
This is exactly on point. I run 46/30 11-40 too on grx 11s. I never wanted to touch SRAM until I tried a bike with XPLR 1x. Now I'm a sram fan when it comes to gear ratios. I could have been a Shimano loyalist but they just don't give enough low gears to people! SRAM is actually the Groupset of the people in my books, more so now with the more affordable apex.
Finally I can change the front derailleur of my 105 di2 for my bikepacking setup!
Now what I really want is a shorter, thinner charging cable! That cable is seriously overkill for long distance riders that need to bring it on their trips, not the sexiest tech, but a much needed one!!!
LOVE hearing and seeing all the new Tech thank you!
We do too 🙌
Can't wait for the front shift button :). I always wondered why they didn't do it previously.
Glad Shimano is sticking with 2x, Shimano are pretty good at it. Just having that option to suddenly drop down to a smaller ring instead of getting caught out when turning the corner after riding a long section of flat road is great. Also chain line is better and sensible size cassettes that don't cost a fortune.
Great to hear from a 2x lover 🙌
It's rather nice. I want. It's not often I can sit through an entire product launch video, but this one I did easily.
That's what we like to hear
Music to our ears! 👌
I guess I am a SRAM Red Etap gear shifter tragic, I just love it. I have a 12 speed Durace DI2 semi synchro on one bike and after market Red Etap on the road bike. I will be giving the Front Shift Next a go for sure, thanks for the tip.
Love my grx 12 x 1. Best groupset I have ridden.
It's pretty great kit isn't it 🔥
Finally wireless shifters and rear derailleur charging an 12 gears. All I wanted from Shimano. No experiments - well done Shimano!
Oh, yeah... another thing to purchase to keep up with Jones' . This constant arms race of componetry is nuts!
Simon use your pull to get them to make a Di2 looking left hand dropper post lever! I couldn’t bring myself to ride Di2 with mismatched levers!!
Good luck Si!
We long time Di2 users sure wish we had that finally developed app.
5:08 that will be the button to launch the proton torpedo 😀😎.
That's the ejector seat 👀
I use to mix with XTR di2 11-46 cassette and single GRX 46 on the front ratio 1:1. The next step it’s to ride with classified hub and cassette 11-30 with front single ring. The best option to avoid the double ring crankset;)
Great review as always. The only comment I thought, that's not true in my experience was regarding the clutch detailer. 'Very important when off road'. Currently using Tiagra 4700 rear derailleur, on the gravel bike with no issues. Have used a GRX with a clutch and it is better, but not 'Very important' better. It's probably the last upgrade I'd consider.
Interesting! It will probably all depend on how rough the riding you are doing it 🪨
I have GRX 11 speed 1x: gear range is poor for a gravel bike unless you only ride gentle hills, no bike packing or have superhuman power! The shift is superb and at no time have I ever thought it’s not fast enough. I will be upgrading to Campagnolo Ekar, a gear cable is absolutely fine but flexibility of cassettes is more important.
Big Thumb Up !
To me they’ve not done enough here to make it a worthwhile step from the current 11-speed Di2. The obvious step would have been to allow for a much bigger cassette like 11-40t, frankly I’m disappointed they haven’t done this.
sounds good but when they will consider the possibility to integrate a power meter like SRAM? 😞
I don't understand the new front shift button? There is already a button for up and down shifting for the front derailleur right?
I race gravel in the SE US - and SRAM AXS really got their teeth into the gravel market four years ago. What has taken Shimano so long to catch up? And I’d argue that Shimano still hasn’t caught up - where’s the power meter and 1x ?
SRAM owns gravel here in the southeast. New SRAM Red will cut into the roadie side as well.
@@defiancecycling I’m seriously considering buying the new Red shifters this Summer and retrofitting them to my existing AXS groupset.
@@defiancecycling Honestly, this new GRX seems like it would actually compete pretty well against the new RED?
A bit heavier, but much cheaper.
@@squngy0 don't get me wrong. I use Shimano Di2 on the road and have for years. However, Shimano doesn't offer enough gearing for more mountainous terrain, IMHO. This group would be great on the road in the mountains but I'll stick with the versatility of SRAM Mullet gearing for now. I'll likely upgrade to the new RED shifters later this year.
@@petersouthernboy6327 💯 the thing to do. I'm planning to do the same. Another bonus for SRAM is compatibility.
The two hood buttons already give me 6 commands for my garmin (short press, long press, double press), will I now get 9 of them? Will be hard to memorise 😂
It‘s about time. I guess we will see the 1x rear mech for the bigger cassettes together with new MTB DI.2 soon. And I am pretty sure we will see the GRX rear mech for 2x in Roubaix.
We believe that Peter Sagan has already used GRX components at the classics 👀
@@gcn Clever man. For the last years it was difficult because GRX was still 11 speed.
I think its an awesome kit, wants me to go DI2 for all those features, really like the wireless., Got the mechanical now but got to say it doesn't shift as great as my trusty downtube shifter 600 ultegra, kinda like they give the room for an improvement.
As always great review, I really like the bird singing, I dont think we have these in eastern Canada, Ollie?
Are you still rocking downtube shifters? We love to hear it 🙌 Di2 is really great, that crisp shifting is amazing when riding through the gravel 👌
@@gcn converted my old racer with flat bar and Mtb brake levers, perfect commuter, still with toe-clips too!
@gcn can you please do a road safety episode? I mean cameras, best practices, cycling etiquette etc.
The extra button on the left lever- Will it talk to any of the wireless dropper posts????
Used a stick instead of a shadow stand. Not in biggy smalls. Left the water bottle on the bike… It’s just a nice for me.
Consider Si told off!
Hahahaha shhhhhh... don't tell the Tech crew 🤫
Crank kinda looks like the square taper 7 speed chain wheel that comes on grocery bikes. Always thought that crank looked decent
Oh look! They put on the new SRAM shifters......or is it the other way around?
Wrap a Grail CF with this and sign me up. Been waiting for this release.
What a combo 🙌
I was at an event where a guy crashed on his LH Di2 11 speed GRX lever, ripped it clean off the bars. the shifter still worked tho': he put it in his pocket and changed gears from there. I looked it up when I got home: $AUD450 (£220, $USD275). Fun way to spend your afternoon, innit?
Wow what an amazing effort to finish the ride 👌
I've got mechanical GRX 11spd on my gravel bike, and I love it. 12spd Di2 would be nice, but it wouldn't make me any faster. It would however, lighten my wallet somewhat. One of My Summer road bikes does have Ultregra Di2, and while it is sublime to use , I could quite happily cope with mechanical on that. I always judge my experience on my rides using the 'grin factor'. And my gravel bike exceeds the required 'grin factor' level on that bike. Therefore, Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.😂
This top end group set is certainly not needed but it's a great bit of kit for those that want it. Grin factor is the only way to judge a ride by 🙌 Having great new kit like this makes us really grin. Keep up the good vibes on the bike 🙌
I get that the new front shifting feature is technically a free update, but as the levers can't be updated wirelessly, it means I will either have to go to a bike shop and probably pay a few bucks just to get it updated, or I'll need to spend almost 40€ worth of cables and adapters just to connect the levers for the update. Can't really call that free
You say its 2x only, but as a cx rider I'm 11-34 is actually fine with a 40/42 chainset. Are you saying it doesnt actually function in 1x or it does, but not useful for gravel?
It just means Shimano is not including a 1x chainring in the box.
If you buy this as a groupset you will not have the option to not also buy the FD and 2x chainring (for now)
Was waiting for that 😀. Is back derailleur compatible with 105 di2 ? If it is ,only need rear derailleur for my gravel bike to be 100 % gravely
Most di2 components are cross compatible
Shimano have this great compatibility chart on their website 👉 gcn.eu/Shimanoroadcompatability
There is this Rotor 11-39 cassette, 12 speed. I'd love to use it in an 1x12 setup with this groupset. Will the rear derailleur accomodate (unofficially) the three extra teeth?
yes, up to 42t works fine with both old and new grx, mechanical and di2
What size grail are you riding
hoping with 1x di2 shimano will offer new cassettes and goddamn 44t chainrings...
Wonder how this compares to SRAMs group set that GCN just shared a week ago.
Top level GRX is Ultegra/Force level according to Shimano, and this is a Gravel groupset, not Road.
It's a bit heavier.
Other than that, it seems to me like they are actually pretty similar?
I remember when Shimano launch GRx 12sp mechanica, they remarked that majority of gravel riders are still using mechanical, hence no di2 😮
Does anyone know which shoes Si is wearing at 0:38? I can see the DMT logo, but cannot find which model shoes those are.
shimano is the leading/best in fishing
Could you combine it with Ultegra 52-36 crankset? I would like to have these gears: 52/36 + 11-34
You can check the compatibility charts here 👉 gcn.eu/Shimanoroadcompatability
Still no 12 speed 1x Di2 GRX with a useable gear range, WTAF Shimano?
Electronic group sets will eventually be powered by the bike motion and rechargeable bats.
I can't keep up Shimano tech.. I'm running 11speed GRX 810 mechanical 1 x... so will this new groupset make faster or just rinse my pocket 🤔
If you're enjoying your current groupset keep on going. Di2 and 12 speed is amazing but it's all about finding what works for you and your budget 🙌
I only have one question-is 46/30 crank with 40t cassette possible?
If not, I keep my mech GRX.
mechanically, the RD is the same as mechanical 12sp GRX so it will easily accommodate up to 42t with just the b screw adjustment
@@lechprotean Thank you. 42t doesnt work well, 40t however works like a charm. So, if I go Di2 I still could use my crankset and cassette, that right?
The issue with this really is that 105di2 does the same job for less money, and you could just mix that with an older 11spd grx crankset for the same result. The clutch doesnt matter.
How will it be retro compatible with the « old » 11s GRX di2 ?
hi! Thanks for the comment, Shimano have a very handy and comprehensive guide regarding compatibility > phycbqxcopzgcmj6yj6xdbogki0wsiwo.lambda-url.ap-northeast-1.on.aws/en/compatibility/C-454#C-454 👍
Waiting for a 1x version
not a 2x lover?
@@gcn happy with 2x on my road bike, but for gravel / all-road I like the simplicity of 1x.
Yeah this is a huge miss for a supposed "gravel" groupset when there are so many gravel bikes that are 1x only (at least practically, without reducing tire clearance or such)
super nice tech!!! i was waiting for this one but why not 1X come on 🤷🏻♂️
2x10 or 2x9 is inn...wee need more chain life
I’m guessing my next bike in the future will be a wireless shifting ❤🎉
Looks like you are ready for an upgrade!
Do it do it do it 😉
So if I’m racing, someone can prevent me from shifting by simply jamming that radio frequency? If I’m on a ride-camp trip where there’s no charging station available, by the middle of day two I can no longer shift?
Some ideas are great. Wireless shifting is not one of them.
but are the cranks still going to break?!?!
Not sure what's the point of this, given that 1x is dominating gravel and they lack a sensibly priced variant. I don't see the appeal of this over XPLR AXS.
Everyone's waiting for XTR 12 speed Di2 to come out later this year or next, then Shimano will just use that rear mech for GRX 1x Di2
cribbing from SRAM Red. Or is SRAM Red cribbing from Shimano?
Thatss wickkeeddd❤❤😅
Is gravel still hipster enough to release new products for?
Certainly!
*GCN admin twirls moustache and cracks knuckles 😎
I wish GRX would offer 165 cranks across the ENTIRE range… if I want 165s on my 1x set up I have to drop down to the entry level crankset… it ain’t right.
A real bargain! 😅
You forgot to include the weight of the battery…
yeah, no thank you shimano - love my wired 2x GRX and definitely cba to charge stuff that works flawlessly without wireless
When is Shimano going to include native support for dropper posts? Not addressing this deficiency in GRX Di2 twelve speed Is another missed opportunity.
The price is absurd. $2k USD for a groupset is crazy. That costs double the price for what I paid for my Scott Speedster Gravel.
Unfortunately cycling has turned into a hobby for people who have far more money than sense.
Doesn't make a lot sense to update my current groupset since I can get proper bike for the same price
It's meant to be absurd. There's no real intention to sell it standalone. They make groupsets to sell bikes. It's something that works for the groupset maker, the bike makers and the consumers. For the 0.1% of people that are doing custom builds, the price isn't a problem, so they might as well jack the margin up there.
Sounds like broke people problems.

Shimano have lost the plot. I have 11 speed GRX Di2 on my Creo 1 and it is excellent. 12 speed only going to 36T where SRAM AXS goes to 50T. The MTB Di2 will only work with the Shimano EP Motor. I will stick with SRAM AXS on my Creo 2

How on earth do you get the power from the battery to the derailleur motors without a wire?
@@paddymurphy-oconnor8255 direct connection like sram does. there could a cable internally in the shifter. who knows. but it is not like shimano does this thing...
@@paddymurphy-oconnor8255 2 batteries (4 if you count shifters)
@@mobert8266 There are pros and cons with Sram's style though. One thing I've always liked about di2 is the battery life, it lasts me around 2-3 months with around 15 hours of riding per week. Since it can use a larger battery, it allows it to use bigger cells which means more voltage draw for the motors, this is often the reason why people say di2 shifts slightly faster and smoother than SRAM. It's marginal for non-racers but it is something to note.
@@ryoukokonpaku1575 i totally understand this issue and that is also something why i like mechanical shifting, aside from maintenance i dont have to charge batteries, also i cant forget to charge.
but then i think with the small removable battery of a sram it is probably just like cleaning your waterbottles, just another regular step you do between your rides.
but i will never know anyway. as it is to expensive for me.
Why not launch the 1x version too like they did with the mechanical version? Sometimes I don't understand Shimano. I do love their products but don't follow their rationale for launching products.
One step further away from keeping it affordable sport
i might aswell just buy a sport bike
GRX RX400 and Microshift are both insanely good value if you can't afford this.

@@HristoMitev123 I could afford it, but that would be me saying I'm okay with it. Nope no
Wireless?
Shimano should use the word cableless instead of the word wireless
It begs the question, when is a wire a wire and a cable a cable?!
Something about wearing bibs in the woods that just doesn't seat well with me. I'm still yet to find what this gravel trend can do that I can't n my 29"er.
Maybe Shimano soon will offer some gravel grx-bibs in limited edition... ;P
The Humane thing to do would be close the doors and give whatever money is left back to investors
Maby i just need somthing new, wireless i not impressing no more....maby a 10 speed internal gear hub for gravel with beld drive... wee have seen all the fine eletronic on the bikes for now...
Massive fail on Shimano's behalf. That rear derailleur could easily take an 11-40, but because shimano has moved 12spd mountain bike components to micro spline 10 tooth this is not an option. Upfront no options for 160 / 165 cranks which are a better fit for anyone under 6ft tall, which is the majority of the worlds population. The front derailleur is a pig compared to the sleek new Ultegra/Dura Ace.
Great looking bike. I was gonna get one but I decided to get a new car and spend the extra money on something else.
What would have made your happier though 😉

It might not make you a better rider but for those racing. The marginal gain of easy shifting will be a big plus 🙌

2500 euro’s. Then there are seriously people who would do this
More expensive than my grx600 2x10 mechanical on carbon frame for 2199€ lmao, so overpriced
to be perfectly honest .. a wireless groupset feels utterly ridiculous and very much gratuitous. The only good reason i see is from the point of view of someone assembling a bike, not even a bike mechanic mind. It introduces a lot more points of failure that a regular person cannot fix themselves but only a specialized shop can. It feels much like how cars have become more and more digital and less mechanical .. and todays mechanics are only half mechanics and half electricians or even coders.
But maybe (probably) i am missing something .. where does a wireless electronic shifting aparatus really beat a full mechanical set up? .. especially when looking at propriety parts and things like linking profiles to a smartphone (which is rather a negative from my pov)
A wire can break.
Wireless is certainly not needed for everyone but it can be a great extra to take your bike to the next level. For those racing, the smooth shifts offer greater reliability and efficiency. As for being able to fix your bike - Di2 is a pretty low maintenance option. No cable stretch or weird routing issues. Perfect for those muddy gravel rides that might slow your bike down. Do you think you would ever jump to electronic gears? ⚡
Wireless is a solution looking for a problem!
Nah, its great. No problem whatsoever in years of using wireless and I love the speed and smoothness of changing gears on push of a button. Dont have to think about chain-crossing in the semiauto and auto mode. I have found no real drawback and will never look back to the mechanical shifting.
@@gcn Ok, those are actually good reasons .. on a very high level of cycling. Is cable stretch really such a problem though? To be honest .. of course, i - like most other people - would jump at the chance to ride a high end bike with the latest gadgets - but ... i do not think it does anything to my "level" of riding a bike. My own bike is an old Dutch bike weighing something like 12kg or so. (i dont know, i find it very hard to lift it)
For professionals with a team of mechanics and a sponsor .. i do see a real benefit. For a regular commuter that values DIY fixing (bike shops have a long queue here) ... and relies on the bike to get to work, i think the "simpler is better" mantra might persist - despite your good reasons.
