As a union guy, this hurt my feelings so bad that I cried. Luckily I worked for less than one hour so I had a fifty dollar bill in my pocket to wipe my tears with.

Non union guys make 15-18 an hr here in the Bay Area. 20 tops. I make over 55 an hour in the union.. I get a pension, an annuity, awesome health, vision, dental for my wife and kid, a vacation check once a year; and none of that comes out of my pocket. They come out of my hours worked that the contractor pays into the trust fund for us

Sorry but non union guys definitely make more than 20 bucks an hour. Good experienced guys are making 35 to 45 right now. They generally don't get good benefits though.

That is great but do you guys work on the mom and pops stores the small commercial stores .. I guess not you only do work for the walgreens , wallmarts targets , the big companies you can overcharged how in the hell you charge a wallmart 200 per hour per carpenter you get 50 which is fine , but theres no way a small comercial store is going to pay for that

      Hands down union
Is far better safety, benefits,, paying taxes , getting annuity, training opportunities, work opportunities ,
      Overtime pay ,
Union signatory contractors dont hire undocumented workers & pay them cash like most non union companies

I am non union but I can definitely see the value of a union when it comes to LEARNING a trade, particularly apprenticeships that cater to teaching and mentorship. In residential, from my experience, its more learning on the fly and it can be easy to pick up bad habits and be a sloppy. I like how unions seem to value craftsmanship and quality wheras the residential framers I see are trying to get everything done as fast as absolutely possible and it often leads to cutting corners

    you forgot something.😂
as a union worker i have $65hr package $40 take home and every 6 months $6k vacation check.
medical insurance for me and my family.
and training for if i want to learn a different trade.
i don’t have to cry to my boss to give me a raise.
union have a contract with the city to get 60% of comercial jobs, that’s why you see huge buildings being built by unionized contractors.
why do you want to blast music?
you are there to work not to party.
i rather work 8hr and blast music the rest of the day in my home with my wife and kids.
and guess what…i also have time to work side jobs 😂.

I have been both. The biggest difference is the union trades understand reciprocity. They mentor the apprentices and genuinely want to see them succeed. If they don't and the union takes a dive, there goes that pension that you worked 30+ years to get. So when I was non union there was a lot of trickery and back stabbing because the old guys didn't want to be out performed by the young guys making it more cutthroat. There's a reason it is called the united brotherhood of carpenters. Any union in the trades set the bar and non union chases it. Otherwise it will always be a race to the bottom. Non union will keep wages higher to compete with union wages so they don't lose their employees. If you have a family and you're on the fence on what to do, I encourage anyone to stop by the local in their area to get more information. Pros and cons to both but what truly matters is the benefits. Can't beat union.

I've worked both. I always got paid every time in the Union. Has its flaws but those are because the rank and file need to stand up and assert themselves, not because of some inherent flaw in unions.
Our strength is our unity and discipline

I’m in the union and it’s great at times but when it comes to staying busy all year if you don’t have “connections” in the company. You’re gonna be sitting out when its slow because everyone has their family favorites.

    • @oscara.9265

      That's why you gotta hustle!
      Your work speaks for itself.
Take it from me to not having any connections and being able to work all year round.
The only time i would have to sit and wait for a job has only been for a couple of weeks at the most. Other than that, i keep myself busy.
YOU HAVE TO BE ON TOP OF YOUR GAME! when it comes to looking for work, you have to put in time. Be there first thing calling or showing up to a jobsite.
More than likely, you will get hired.
As far as people within the company that have "their own people", yes, it's true. That does happen but it doesn't happen everywhere.

Down here in Nashville lu 223. We have work for the next few years honestly. Major developments in the city and plenty of shit to frame and hang. We don’t have enough workers honestly speaking. The catered training and safety are probably the real biggest difference between the two. I’ve met great guys on both sides of the fence across every trade truth be told

I worked non union for almsot 15 years worked with different companies i even worked with a good compnay that had a non union aprentership program. I finaly joined the union after hearing about a 20$ wage increase. All i have to say money aside. Union is organized union has professinal traning centers trained instructors Pension anuity health vision dental vacation pay the package for most unions carpenters electricians iron workers plumbers etc is over 80$ an hour and at least half of that is wages 80$ package is bottem of the barrel package here pretty much all union costruction jobs are at least 50$ an hour right now. Non union was unprofessional lacked organization the companies have favorites and they pick and choose everyones wages. You can another guys can work a non union job and start the same day and in a year both your wages can be different even if your the same age same experience and same work ethic. After being in the union for about 6 years all i have to say is non union takes advatage of its workers. We call them rat jobs for a reason. Not all non union companies are bad there is some very professional ones but for the most part all union jobs are very professional and well organized if there is the slightest problem bring it up the the general super of the job and they get right on fixing the issue vs a non union job if you complain about something like hey i dont like being on a 15 foot latter with out fall protection, alot of the times they will just get rid of you.

If I’m being honest if you wanna start your own business I’d recommend the non union side. Some people have bigger goals than working for a union and retiring at 65. Also it’s easier to expand outside of your field. Working at the same commercial job site for over a year gets old!

I’ve been in the union two years now. It’s gonna be all commercial work and they definitely play favorites and high school drama. They will definitely lay you off if they don’t like you or if your a threat to there position etc. get ready to be bounced around a lot as an apprentice I’ve seen journeyman try to run younger guys into the ground and get them to quit. Their having trouble I’m my area finding guys because it’s not the song and dance they sell you once guys see that they walk. Electrician union is probably the best to shoot for. Carpenter union is not considered a skilled trade.

@Joggin throughout The Country I’ve seen them discriminate like crazy they do “hire” ppl of other race sexual orientation ect but just enough to look good and those ppl unknowingly get the crappy treatment. It’s a constant battle for minorities I see it everyday. It’s why I’m starting to keep track of it and then when I have the evidence I need I’m going to put a stop to it.
