- The Industrial Revolution brought significant social and economic changes to Europe and Britain. The construction of the Cork and Bandon Railway presented substantial engineering challenges, including the need for a deep tunnel through Goggin's Hill. The Goggin's Hill tunnel, about a kilometer long, was a remarkable engineering feat of the Victorian Railway age. The construction involved blasting through rock using gunpowder, with teams of workers enduring difficult and dangerous conditions, working day and night.

I tip my hat to the workers that did the real labor. The builders are long gone and "sadly" forgotten but because of their skill, craftsmanship and determination their work still stands today. Amazing what could be built before computers and any type of powered equipment.

@@eliz49Smarter in some ways and not so smart in others. I’ve personally always found it interesting that there are important discoveries throughout history that are made, lost and discovered anew. Just an example is how mouldy bread was used by ancient Egyptians specifically on infected wounds thousands of years before bacteria were even discovered. No, they didn’t know exactly why the mouldy bread worked when treating infection, but they discovered that it worked and they utilised it. They had an efficient Treatment option (considering the time period). Conversely, the oh so civilised Western world didn’t discover antibiotics until less than 100 years ago and even then, it was accidental! Less than 100 years ago, people were still perishing from infections that could have been effectively treated thousands of years prior 😬
Makes me even more proud to be Irish. I never knew any of the history of the railways, or gunpowder works. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Fantastic, better than anything on the telly. 10/10

History must be kept at all costs how we do not have the people to do and keep our history safe, and for the next hundred generations to come Ireland must keep its culture in every way, because Ireland would not be Ireland without the people who are there simply some of the most amazing violin players that I have ever heard Regards Al from down under

Unfortunately in Canada most of the tunnel works were new comers to Canada. Most of them were Chinese. If I remember most of the Chinese were buried in unmarked graves along the railroad. As far as I’m concerned it is one of the black marks on Canada’s history.
