Delta [C64] - live on PO-28, PO-14 & PO-16 Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators

- Here I do yet another live performance of a Commodore 64 SID classic: Delta, by Rob Hubbard from 1987.
Three Teenage Engineering Pocket Operators are used:
* PO-28 Robot: main lead, blips and drums.
* PO-14 Sub: bass and extra percussion.
* PO-16 Factory: secondary lead.
Both leads are played live, but some special tricks had to be done in order to overcome the "fixed scale" of the PO's, in this song that actually uses two scales. The PO-16 runs a few empty patterns where some notes on certain occasions are raised a half step. That way the range gets much wider.
Due to the 16-pattern limit of the PO-14 and PO-16 I had to break up the mid part and cut the parts together. Everything is done live though, so it's totally playable.
Hubbard borrowed quite a bit from Philip Glass' "Koyaanisqatsi" for this theme :)
Been listening all these tunes today, now I have to buy these mini synths for my kids....
+Scott Manley GREAT SCOTT!
+Scott Manley Yes, they are definitely useful for kids! Don't know if you already seen them, but my kid (8yr) have done some videos with the POs, here on the channel as well.
+Scott Manley I have the PO12 and the PO20, my nine-year-old begs to mess around on them all the time.
I guess that’s a good excuse to get hands on them. 👍
Never had a Commodore nor have I heard this song before but man, you freaked it'
+Superblaq Thanks! If you are interested, you can download the VICE emulator and test some old classic games yourself :)
it's really great! you deserve the title of Grandmaster of POs!!!
Haha, thank you G00G00L :)
Nice! :-)
+Jeroen Tel Oh, thank you very much! Your music has played a big part in my life. :)
Mad skills!!!Tubesockor sounds like a swedish word. Så grymt bra, både uppträdande och låt.
Thanks!!! Well, the word is actually ”swenglish/svengelska” :) Roligt att höra att du gillar det!
Pure shreds going on! Absolute don!!!
+chad powerz Thanks :)
Super flippin' awesome.
Yay!
Those speed skills though, epic
:)
this is insane. congratulations.
+Tamas Kalman Thank's a lot! :)
mind blown , again.
Hehe, thanks! :)
Your finger movements are so fast and precise, it's almost otherworldly, I wonder how much practice it'll take to get that epic...
Thank you! Yeah, some practice might be good - but you'll get there! :)
AWESOME! Surprised that the PO20 wasn't used in this though.
+Captain Logic Thanks! Yes, no need for fast auto-arps in this song - but we'll see what happens in future posts :)
Yes!
Hey! I finally gave my pocket operator/etc doodles a home out here in the UA-cam world -looking forward to sharing things more than 15 seconds :P
Wow, that was awesome! ^_^
+MusicWizard Thank you!
Amazeballs!
+Terrible Beat Thanks :)
Sick!!
Wunderkind 😯😃🤩🤩🤩
wow 😱
Well done
+Michael Wilcox Well, thank you :)
Grande, sei un mito!!
Muchas gracias!
Fast fingers man!
Led storm theme
+arthur king Do you think it is similar to Delta, or that I should make a variant of it?
Is the original song also in the same scale as the robot or did you do some converting? How does that work? i have the arcade and tonic, sub and factory coming tomorrow :)
also, would you recommend getting the robot if i already have an arcade and factory?
+Glychee S I had to transpose, since the original is in Eb minor, and the Robot only does A minor.
+Glychee S I really like the Robot, and would prefer it over the Factory. It goes very well with the Arcade (I have a song [New Frontier] on the channel which uses those two)
😦
:)
Can you save these songs?
+ColinRussianForce The POs only fit 16 patterns each and there is no way to save them externally, unfortunately. But that is also part of the charm with the POs.
Wow, this makes me want to get those things too, realise I have no musical talent, end up doing nothing with them and wasting a bunch of money!
But seriously, a lot of people seem to harp really hard on "overpriced" teenage engineering products and you seem to actually never encounter them in "what should you buy" threads. What do you think about that attitude on their products?
The OP-1 sure cost a lot of money if you compare with most other music instruments of that physical size. But the thing is that it is a really high quality instrument - much like a "Macbook Pro" of that segment. I don't find the POs too expensive either, for what you get. But it isn't a product for everyone. They can be both right and wrong, for both music professionals as well as the casual "musically interested" person. It all depends on how you use it.
Loved the Music, was disappointed by the game's ultra-rigid one way-my way- or the highway gameplay. I could literally do levels to the pixel. It was boring. Which peeved me because I loved Thalamus and Stavros Fasoulas, but Delta was just a thin 'Salamander' clone, and nowhere near as fun. Loved Quedex though. Great game.
BTW, why in that key, and not the original ?
+huggeebear Yeah, pretty much the same here :) Good question about the key! The reason is that those little things have fixed scales. You are pretty much limited to Am / C Major scales, so I had to transpose the song into Am. But, the PO-16 (the one on the left) actually has an "effect" where you can transpose the entire keyboard one half-step upwards. This effect is applied to certain steps in the sequences, so when I'm playing on it, some notes are raised a half-step. It makes it not so easy to play, since the keys all of a sudden is in Bbm scale, but it works :) Take a look at it again (and compare with the notes you are hearing) and you might see it!
My accountant doesn't even type this fast on his calculators!
Haha :)
There's no two without three... Do you take requests? Please, play Outrun theme!!! :P
+gattobus Might happen some time ;)
Good example of music talent not needing the "best" gear. you really played these PO's good. with even better gear, you'd probably be even more impressive.
+NYCP NY Thank you! I play "regular" keyboards as well, but I like the limitations of these a lot.
Bravo ! We have a PO virtuoso :) I have the 14 and 20 with 28 coming tomorrow. Which one do you suggest next? 16 for the bass or the new kids on the block, the versatile 32?
Thanks! Well, 14 is the bass synth - so if you got 20 & 28 I don't think you need 16 (melody). It seems you don't have a drum machine so therefore I would suggest the 32.
I promptly recognized the Koyaanisqatsi theme! Just discovered it was mentioned on description. :) Awesome work and skills. Good job!
+Adonai Junior Great! Yes, Rob Hubbard often borrowed items from other songs in his old C64 classics. And thanks!
Thumbs up!
+lftkryo Thank You! :) No chance for firmware upgrades, no? I have a wishlist ;)
Awesome !
haha daaaamn
fantastic playing! !
+bananepoep yeah absolutely amazing!
+AA Battery +bananepoep Nice that you liked it! :)
Awesome. Now Monty on the Run?
Thanks! Maybe, someday… :)
1:35 was a face melter for sure. Bravo!
Thank you, glad you liked it :)
off the chain! shredding on a PO - tick.
+j. tomes Glad you liked it :)
Yes. Good one. :)
Yay!
Reammy amazes me what you can do with these things! Awesome job!

This is great!
+PaulReviews Thanks :)
I love it!
Greeeeat!
Dammmm..sick... verry nice
Thanks!
Holy shit...
Well done! ;o)
+CoLD SToRAGE Official Thank you! You have done some great remixes!
+tubesockor I try my best... ;o)
Heh, now try Sanxion :)
+Mark Whittington (Whitt.) Hehe, Prokofjev? :)
I'm gonna start harassing TE to bring out one of their operators with a SID chip in it.
The PO-20 and 28 are not far from it, actually :)
probably true, but for those of a certain generation there would be nothing quite like having an (more or less) actual pocket SID.
Yep, I’m of that generation as well :) Got a fully stacked HardSID 4 U which sounds marvellous! But the Sidtracker 64 for iPad is not half bad. And with an iPad Mini it almost fits in your pocket as well :)
Awesome! How much of that could you have done on PO-28 on its own?
+Dave Cooper Thanks! Not so much more than is done here - the lead for the A part, the blips and some drums. The bass and B part lead does use notes that are not even available on the PO-28.
tubesockor thanks. I've ordered three PO-28 and will see how I get on with that and then I might get there Arcade for its chords etc.
+Dave Cooper Three PO-28 - wow, that's a bit... unusual :)
+tubesockor haha. Make that 'the' 😀
+Dave Cooper Hehe, more reasonable then :)
Awesome little piece! -
+Ivegotanidea Thanks!
Do Uridium main theme
Thanks for the tip - I'm adding it to my requests-list :)
This is sick man! GJ! :D
+Belebuc Buc Nice that you like it :) More will follow!
OK man that was awesome. I am not sure what I'm even looking at, but anyone covering Delta gets proper respects from me!
+Kattywampus Thanks! There are more Hubbard stuff on this channel and even more will appear...
Guess I'll subscribe, then!

you are God
+small bros Haha :)
Sick! Something I never thought about with the Pocket Operators, but it sounds amazing!
+MrFricoco Happy to hear that :)
Fantastic work! May I feature this on my weekly game news show? I'll be sure to credit you.
+Jourdan Cameron Thanks! That shouldn't be a problem - do you have a link to it?
wow, that is truly awesome. You particularly nailed the 'lead' voice, that is an absolute ringer for delta on the SID.
+Olaf Wagner Thanks. Yes, the SID was/is a true beauty :)
I absolutely love what you did here with the robot as the lead. Sounds professional and like straight out of a game.
Thanks! Yes, the robot shines as a lead synth in this genre. But of course, if the melody is written by Rob Hubbard as well - there not much that can go wrong :)
omg omg omg
I take that as a positive comment, thanks :)
Lo-Fi Pask - Brought me here, .... ..... .... .... .... .... Amazing ... amazing!
Thank you!
That was amazing! Can't believe you did this all with pocket operators and by hand...
Thank you! Took some practice, but was fun to do!
tubesockor :D
ah sweet nostalgic sound. well played!
+Aldy Waani Thank you!
Amazing scenes! :D Brilliant rendition. Love the POs and also worked on the Delta way back when :D
+Gaz Liddon Thanks a lot!
+tubesockor Gary Liddon, wow! I was a Zzap! devotee back in the day, thanks for all your work back then. That magazine was part of my formative youth :-)
Was this game ever called Delta Patrol, shortened to just Delta? I remember a poster my brother had that probably came with the game and from memory it had Delta Patrol on it.
Yes, it was called Delta Patrol when released in US - and just ”Delta” elsewhere.
You sir deserve more views! This is amazing! :)
+Vlad Morosanu Thanks :) More videos will follow!
Holy crap, that's amazing!!
+Vittek Antilles Glad you liked it :)
Ahhh. More delicious arps
Oh yes! I might have some arps on some of the other vids as well, who knows :)
tubesockor i might just have to watch all of them ;)
Please do, and let me know what you think!
tubesockor yes definitely :)
Bet you didn’t think I was actually gonna listen to all of them, did you. Well here i am :D i loved them all. You are very talented and I totally agree with what you said in your Depeche Mode video about limitations
The fast section near the end is amazing!
+Mik1 Thank you!
