As an Arab who grew up in America my mother would speak to me in Arabic since she doesn’t know English and I would be so confused but I finally understand and that is how we used to talk.
That’s exactly what I am doing with my 2 and 4 year old kids , Arabic isn’t just my language, it’s also the language of the Quraan, if they don’t learn it, they won’t learn the Quraan or understand it!!! I’m frustrated by Arabs who don’t commit to teaching their children their language

This is 100 percent true. Having elders speaking their real language to you, sometimes its hard to understand them. Im Hmong, and when elders speak to me, i just nod my head. But when my mom speaks Hmong, i listen and just do what she says.

Haha that reminds me of the interactions between my grandparents (who tend to speak more tagalog or ilocano around the house out of convience) my nieces and nephews( who only speak english). This results in the childrens' parents getting yelled at for not teaching them how to speak the language.

My first wife was a Latina. She taught our oldest kid to speak Spanish very fluently. She taught our second kid to speak Spanish rather brokenly. She taught our third kid to speak Spanish absolutely not at all. She just got lazy. Even with her mom living with us who doesn’t speak any English at all. I tried to get her to teach me Spanish but she would just yell at me too much when I got something wrong so I didn’t bother.

I love that mom is trying to keep their native lamguage alive. My family only spoke Italian when they didn't want my brother and I to know what they were discussing! I took it for 4 years in HS and listen to a lot of Italian music. I loved speaking with my dad and aunt, but they died last year.😢 🇮🇹
