    I had a gopher service come out to get rid of my gopher problem. The technician used these same traps and caught one; however, he set 5 traps in all but only one worked on getting a gopher. Then the technician came back in a week and gassed the holes. I'm buying a couple of these traps to set them myself instead of paying a service as I have seen more evidence of gopher activity. I just want to thank you for the informative instructions on how to properly set these traps. Thanks - much appreciated!!!!

    Poppa Dare: Gopher Hawks seem to have a short effective span, at least here in High Desert hard-packed soil. Realized some kills early on; no more than three. Then, nothing. Zero. Zed. Nadda. Three years now. Moved on to Swiss and Austrian made traps with far better results.

    Dude! Best video yet on Gopherhawk. I just got one and have been "trying" to set it based on pkg instructions 👎 & other worthless videos. I cant get it to stay upright. I had no idea how to trip it in order to try another area so i was throwing it onto the ground. Well, guess what? The metal cage is now all bent up & useless. After watching your awesome video I will order a new basket & try again. My tunnels are very shallow so i will use your tip to pack dirt around it. Wish me luck!!

    I just had a pest control company here at my house and he explained to me that moles eat grubs etc. and their tunnels are deeper in the ground. But Voles eat the base of plant roots and their tunnels are not deep- they are just beneath the surface. Maybe you have voles instead of moles? Recently I started spraying my yard with 30% vinegar and they've been leaving in droves! They don't like the scent of vinegar at all. They also hate the scent of mint so I'm going to try the Irish Spring soap hack and see if that helps.

I sent it back. Then i ordered 2 other traps. One of them looks like it is also a directional trap. I think ill have to send it back. I haven't tried them yet but watching your video, it realy looks like fewer variables. Thanks for the video. Hope fatherhood is treating you well.

    The out of sight trap is a really old designs that’s worked over a 100 years. They are fantastic traps. Much better at shallow tunnels then using a gopher hawk. I have the gopher hawk and like it a lot but it’s more for deep tunnels.

      @@metal422life I've always covered them with an overturned bucket. It helps keep pets away, helps keep rain and sprinkler water out (I find that moles tend to tunnel around or beneath the heavy wet dirt when they can), and will act as a visual reminder while mowing.

    Bought but didn't work on shallow runs that are only an inch below the dirt. The device is too long and has no support to stay upright. I do like the indicator that identifies when tripped and is well made if dealing with deeper gophers. It did trip once but from dirt being pushed into it. The 3 wires also make it not align with the run. I will have to go back to Trapline traps :(

      I had to put some bricks on mine to hold it steady for the shallow runs. I put a total of 4 bricks crisscrossed. I was also concerned with the 3 wires not aligning with the run, but managed to put it pretty straight.

      Try using like a 3ft piece of 1" or 1-1/4" EMT Conduit or even like an aluminum shower curtain rod if that's easier to find, either way you should try using a thin-walled piece of ridgid pipe or conduit to take a plug out of the ground that the Gopherhawk trap can slide into. Instead of compacting the dirt surrounding the cage you're removing it so it doesn't just get pushed back in and trigger the trap when the gopher or mole uses the tunnel again. You still need to use the probing tool to find the tunnel, just not the wedge.

    So quick question? Do you wash the Gopher Hawks after they have been used? After using them for a couple years did you notice a decline in catches not just because less moles but just couldn't catch him ? Does the dead mole smell make moles avvoid the trap? Mine worked great f9r the first year. I bought 1 it worked in 10mins so i ordered 10 more and now i have about 30 but they seem to be elusive even though that there are fresh Mounds all over the place and 12 traps set. I was curious if you have noticed a similar type of thing?

      Have the baskets gotten somewhat deformed or out of shape from use? That's probably the reason you're having problems. Try reshaping them to their original state and if that's easier said than done Gopher Hawk sells replacement baskets as well.

    • @metal422life
      @metal422life 9 місяців тому

      @@KB-ie7jr the baskets are still in Primo condition there's no deformation on them. The catching basket still looks nearly identical to a brand new one I'm starting to theorize that it's possible that they smell dead mole and it scares them away

    • @KB-ie7jr
      @KB-ie7jr 9 місяців тому

      @@metal422life It's possible but just hard for me to accept as the main reason here. Moles do have a keen sense of smell but odors diffuse into dirt very well so moles rely mainly on their sense of touch. Just slight contact with any part of the basket in their tunnel will deter them and you have to remember they are as wide as their tunnel so proper positioning of the trap is crucial. That's why I first assumed basket but even the tunnel you choose for your trap is important plus a whole lot more than what I assume most people have the patience for in a UA-cam comment.

    • @metal422life
      @metal422life 9 місяців тому

      @@KB-ie7jr well my method that I use is slightly different from what the instruction manual says for them. mostly because I've had great luck doing it my way. but it worked for the most part pretty dang well but then it seems like they're getting wise just because so many of them have been killed I'm using the trap. but my method is I see the mole hill and I dig down with my hands and I try to find an mound where it will have three holes down in the mound so a tunnel that does a y, then I put the trap into the hole I bury the tube and then set the trap. sometimes I set the trap then bury it in the hole.

    • @KB-ie7jr
      @KB-ie7jr 9 місяців тому

      @@metal422life Something to always keep front of mind is that moles can be elusive little turds and to be successful in catching them you have learn from when you don't. Determine what was different from the last time you caught one that might have led to comming up short this time -without blaming the trap or the mole. Was it the placement in the tunnel, wrong type of tunnel, or maybe just lacking patience? Was the trap tripped? Did you notice any new activity near the trap? Doing this will help hone your technique.
      A couple suggestions: step down the newer activity and pay attention to which ones come back. These will be the active tunnels you want to set the traps in. Avoid setting traps at the mole hills. I know you've previously been successfull here but these are usually the spots where tunnels bifurcate, get sealed off, and the mole continues on. And if you need to dig for trap placement, either wear gloves or use a garden trowel, don't use your bare hands. That the moles can definitely smell.
