Apenheul gorillas, June 2021: Gorilla Bao Bao gets heart medication & has a baby boy!

June 7, 2021: Last time the silverback of Apenheul, gorilla Bao Bao (1985), was not outside and we were not allowed to enter. But this time Bao Bao was outside. Together with 4 females: Mintha (1974), Mandji (1975), Nemsi (2001) & Gyasi (2002). Of course gorilla baby Kiango was also there, because Gyasi always has it with him. Kiango (21/2/2021, 3 months old) is Bao Bao's first offspring. Just before the feed presentation started, he was mating with Mandji. Last fall, it was discovered that Bao Bao has heart problems. Medication has started and there has also been more peace in the group, because adolescent Jabari (2012) is sitting separately. There is always at least 1 female at Jabari, currently even 2: M'Fugaji (2009) and Chama (2011). We'll visit them in the next video.

Thanks for tagging them individually. Really help to see them as unique as they are. Hope Bao Bao is going to recover and back to health again. I guess he's a bit old now. It's so great to see his baby son with his mom. What a beautiful boy he is!

Bao Bao aan het paren met MANDJI?! Zo, respect: Die oude dame gaat warempel door tot 'r laatste snik! Ze moet - vanuit Gorilla-perspectief - wel 'iets' hebben, want van Bongo was ze destijds ook al de favoriete vrouw - zes kids hadden ze samen, geloof ik.
Dat is dan weer het faire van de de dierenwereld: Je bent als vrouw niet automatisch afgeschreven vanwege je leeftijd.

Is Mandji too old to get pregnant?

Dalila, Gyasi’s mom, last gave birth when she was 40. Mandji is 45/46 (wildborn) so there may still be a chance she could get pregnant.

@@Sorayax073 Everything is possible. However, there's still a difference between 40 and 46: Gorilla's until now are expected to reach the age of about 50 years, so I'm not sure if she shouldn't be at her limit now...
And besides, guess she becomes pregnant, gets het baby and dies, for example, a half year later... Poor child if that would happen!
In Artis, Amsterdam, Gorilla mother Shindy died suddenly, leaving two sons of about 9 and fast 3 years old. Fortunately the youngest almost didn't drink by her anymore, so that wasn't too bad, but if he had been two years younger...
I really believe it should be better to take care of Mandji by now and give her a kind of medicine that will make her not to be pregnant again - Only making love can be allowed, of course: Generally that's a good thing for the old lady!
