I love Contact and it still seems to me the most realistic movie of this genre. The story is just so amazing, and I really wished it was a longer film.
There are at least 3 versions of this movie. Depending on the version you found, you might not have noticed the overall plot point that those ocean aliens were about to use their water technology to flood the planet and wipe the planet clean of humans. Bud basically saved the planet with his heroic and loving message to Lindsey by showing the aliens that there was good in people as well. The build up to that event had the aliens pausing long enough to investigate. Towards the end, there's a huge wall of water approaching the coast and at some point after Bud disables the nuke, the wall of water just stops and falls back down into the ocean.
I was born in 82 and I remember watching this as a kid and the CPR scene has always stuck with me. The way bud screamed at Lindsay to fight completely overshadowed me seeing boobies which is saying a lot 😂
Yes, Ed Harris was in Apollo 13. He played the head guy on the ground. The cast in this movie spent so much time cold and wet they ended up hating Cameron, each other, and the whole world. A couple of them publicly said they'd never work with Cameron again. But they made an incredible movie. The water snake alien special effects were cutting edge and had never been seen before in a major motion picture. I saw it when it came out and it's hard to describe the impact of the special effects.
Fun fact, the breathable liquid is real. It was actually used in the rat scene. It's been used by Navy Seals, though it often results in panic, so isn't generally used.
FYI, the rat scene where they put it in the pink liquid, that was REAL! ... Not just movie magic of something that could be real, they ACTUALLY submerged the rat in that pink oxygenated breathing liquid during filming, and the rat really did breathe that liquid!
Enjoyed your reactions to one of my all-time favorite movies. The making of 'The Abyss' is generally held to have been one of the most strenuous and difficult ever. Fair to say that some participants came out of it with a kind of PTSD - many STILL won't talk about this time much. The extended version is even better, flashes things out, fills in a few gaps and so forth. Orson Scott Card wrote the movie novelization, and did an amazing job (this was in his pre-crazy days).
One of my favorite movies...like BJ said, I'd like to think that there are good aliens out there, more than the malevolent ones. Guys, have you ever seen APOCOLYPTO....a very good movie, directed by Mel Gibson, about the Mayan civilization before discovery...you need to see it, you'll be on edge through the whole movie....it's fantastic. 💙🌺
I saw this at the movie theater when it came out. The colors you see, the pinks and the blues, pale in comparison to what you see in the theater, it was stunning. Love the soundtrack at the end there. Cameron's a genius, he can push all the buttons.

I saw this movie at the theater with my parents when I was 14, not expecting much from it, and it blew me away. For 1989, it was an amazing movie, and as we all know, that's what James Cameron tends to do. I wouldn't be this surprised again by a movie until 10 years later, when I saw The Matrix. While we're on the topic of James Cameron, you two should react to Alita: Battle Angel. James Cameron developed the movie for years and decided to let Robert Rodriguez direct it, due to not having time himself because of the Avatar movies, though they kept in touch and collaborated on it, and Robert Rodriguez said he did his best to make it a "James Cameron film" and most would agree he succeeded. Like the Abyss, it's an amazing movie that a lot of people have never heard of, though most hardcore movie-goers have seen it and love it. Alita: Battle Angel (2019) Action, Sci-fi, Live Action. And, it technically IS a James Cameron film. Mostly written by James Cameron. Effects by James Cameron's special effects crew. I saw it 7 or 8 times at the theater. Unfortunately, not many went to see it because it was released when most people were just holding off to see the MCU movies and not giving much else a chance. It wasn't marketed well because it was during the time when 20th Century Fox was being bought by Disney, and I'm sure Disney wouldn't like it taking their Captain Marvel money (their movie was nowhere near as good as Alita Battle Angel). It's an extreme shame. You'll see how good it is when you see it.
The first movie that used cgi liquid effects, the next movie was Terminator 2, then it was everywhere. There's also an extended directors cut that's over 4 hrs long. It changes the story quit a bit as far as the aliens reason fot checking them out. Great movie!
Saw this movie on release week with my bestie. We're both in our 50's and still talk about this film, the production, the cast and the ground breaking effects for the time. I also have the Directors cut which in my opinion fills in some of the gaps in the storyline from the theatrical release. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes from England.
James Cameron is one of only 2 or 3 people to have been to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest place in the ocean. He's legitimately one of the world's leading experts on deep sea submersibles. He is an engineer as well as a movie director, producer, and screenplay writer. Along with directing the Avatar films he's also inventing all new submersibles to go back to the Titanic wreckage to create trust in the fact that when it's done right it's not dangerous.
Ha! Someone else who says kiddo. I have a friend in Kuwait who was a little offended I called him kiddo because he’s in his 40’s. I told him not to worry unless I call him sugar or hun.
When the cast first arrived on the set, James Cameron greeted them by saying, "Welcome to my nightmare." He had been trying to work out all the technical issues for weeks. Filming was so problematic. Everyone hated working on it. In the scene where Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio (Lindsey) almost drowned she very nearly did! Ed Harris (Bud) noticed she was in trouble so he tried to get Cameron to stop filming. Cameron refused because he wanted realism. Ed Harris tackled him to the ground and just about punched his lights out.
The male lead in this movie was Ed Harris and he was in "Apollo. 13". He was the guy in charge of the rescue effort back at N.A.S.A. He was the one who said "Failure is not an option" The guy who was in charge of the department in "Hidden Figures" was Kevin Costner.
The ending makes so much more sense when you watch the Director's Cut which has an extra 17 minutes or so that really changes the meaning of the encounter at the end. Also you may not recognise that the actor who plays Coffey (the marine who gets psychosis) is the same one who plays Kyle Reese in Terminator (Michael Biehn). And yes, you picked Ed Harris from Apollo 13. He is an awesome actor and appears in a lot of movies as a (fantastic) supporting cast member but I always thought that in this movie he gets to shine as the main protagonist.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies and one that made me fascinated with the deepest parts of the ocean (I would 100% go down deep in a submersible, if I had the chance...now, SPACE, on the other hand, I find terrifying). I hoped you'd react to it at some point, because I knew you'd love it. It's the kind of movie you can watch again, and if you ever do, I would strongly urge you to watch the Special Edition (as opposed to the one presented here which is the Theatrical Edition). It has an entire subplot that was edited out to make the theatrical runtime shorter, because it was thought that moviegoing audiences at the time wouldn't tolerate a long runtime. The Special Edition really touches on more emotional themes and gives more context to the actions of the NTIs at the end in saving Bud. I hope you get to check it out at some point, but either way, thank you for reacting to this special movie! James Cameron does it again!
I enjoyed Every second 💯! I was watching this movie when I was 12 years old .. a masterclass film they don't do it like this no more thankyou yall 🍿👍 stay Awesome ⭐️
So far just 27 people have managed to reach the deepest point in the ocean, which is the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench near Guam in the Pacific. Some 10,900 meters straight down, or 35,800 feet. James Cameron did it as the third person in history, in a so-called "batyscaphe" of his own own design (yep, James Cameron, the dang film maker has been to the deepest bottom of the oceans). He did it in 2012, 52 years after the first two blokes had done it on the same trip way back in 1960. Anyway, they haven't yet encountered any NTI critters like in this movie down there.
I usually don't like the extended edition of movies but, much like the LOTR movies, this is one where it adds a lot of info. Glad you guys finally watched it, I do recommend checking out the extended edition, even if you just watch the scene at the bottom of the abyss where the "aliens" explain to him what is going on. : ]
It's because nitrogen turns poisonous when it's under pressure, so the air people breathe in deep sea submarines is a different mix of gasses than it is at the surface. "Blowing down" is where people coming onboard wait while the pressure equalizes and the surface air is exchanged for the air on the submarine. The worse news Lindsey mentions-- decompressing has to happen gradually, which can take weeks. Otherwise people die of decompression sickness as the compressed gasses in the blood bubble out.
The true meaning of this movie is: the underwater alien life form wasn’t the “enemy”, it was human beings. The fear of the unknown is what fuels the obsession with aliens attacking us (humans). You two should also watch the Director’s Cut. It’s more fleshed out. Once you see that version, you’ll understand the underlying reason for why the alien species chose to help the humans underwater. Awesome movie choice, btw❤ The Abyss is one of my ultimate favorite films ever, especially the resuscitation scene 😢😮
Oh, boo. This isn’t the extended cut? FACTS: The Abyss was the first movie to have a 3 hour long directors cut that completely changed the plot or meaning of the movie. Director’s cut of Butterfly effect is actually good. The ending is actually haunting and makes you think.
Man this movie was magical for me. Loved the whole movie. Its definitely a memorable one. Now yall need to check out another thriller called Negotiator with Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey.
The concern they have about Coffey leaving the rig with the warhead is twofold: One - they don't really want to nuke the aliens. Two - A fifty kiloton warhead from 2 miles away is basically right next door. Even through all of that water, the explosion would absolutely kill everyone in the rig. That's not even factoring in the ecological damage it would do to the seafloor and whatever radioactive material got blasted upwards to the surface.
Appolo 13 is Ed Harris ( he was in This movie, Hidden figures is Keven Costner. I saw this movie when I came out and the special effects were cutting edge. It was a prelude to the Technology James Cameron used In Terminator 2.
Solid movie, was great in theaters upon release. Ed Harris refuses to talk about his experience filming this and the female lead walked off the set in tears apparently with so many retakes called by Cameron during the resuscitation scene. Cameron is a fine director but a good amount of cast and crew didnt enjoy working for him. Also the water tentacle scene was first of its kind back then. CGI was barely a thing, but it did lead to Terminator 2 a few years later featuring insane CGI at the time. Fun reaction as always guys.
Great reaction to a great film. I've always loved this movie. This was the theater cut. The director's cut has significant additional scenes that put a different spin on the movie and let you see what message James Cameron wanted to convey, FYI. (This comment edited to fix a typo) I always get teary eyed when Bud brings Lindsey back from drowning
Wooo boy, this one is an absolutely incredible Movie, grown up with this as my Parents loved it. This was by far one of the most difficult Movies to film in History. They built a massive outdoor tank for the outside underwater shots, but they needed the water to be dark, so they poured millions of black silicon beads on top of the water, making it incredibly dangerous to dive in. The Cast were utterly miserable throughout as they're sodden wet almost the entire length of the Movie. Ed Harris almost drowned on set and had a punch up with Cameron afterwards, later breaking down when he got home. Mary Mastrantonio almost quit during the CPR scene as they had to do multiple takes with Camera equipment being faulty, and Harris really was slapping her, he has said himself it was one of the most difficult scenes he's ever been involved in. They had to find a way to film underwater without all the electrical equipment accidentally shorting out and killing everyone nearby. The whole story of the Production of this Movie is a soaking wet mess, but my God what a Movie it ended up being! Also, Liquid Breathing is a real thing, the rat scene was real. However, the only cases of Human use are in the Medical field with the use of Ventilators and Pumps, as our Chest/Lungs are not strong enough to cycle enough liquid, so free breathing like in the Movie is largely off the cards. Also also, yes, Ed Harris is the Flight Director in Apollo 13 :)
The sad part is that Lt Koffey, the SEAL team leader, was suffering from narcosis, and if he had been brought back to the surface, within 24 hrs he would have been back to normal and absolutely embarrassed at how he acted.

“What’s our depth?”
Way too deep to LIVE! 😂😂
Such a great movie. The acting is 10/10, and of quality not seen in modern movies.
I was born in 82 and I remember watching this as a kid and the CPR scene has always stuck with me. The way bud screamed at Lindsay to fight completely overshadowed me seeing boobies which is saying a lot 😂
@@Mcnuggetheadone 82 here as well. Exactly my experience as well.
To me Michael Biehn (Crazy Coffee ☕, or however his name is) leaves a very memorable impression as this highly nervous person. Very underrated imo.
Agreed. A cameleon with acting range.
Michael Biehn was also in the other James Cameron films, The Terminator and Aliens
love him, I think he has a good soul.
This movie is crazy how it was made & that feeling of clostrophobia. It's still hard to wrap our heads around that roughly 5-6% is only been explored.
This was my favorite movie for a long time. I was 15 when it came out.
I'm glad y'all watched this because it's amazing but you REALLY need to watch the longer version. It's miles better and the ending way more impactful. One of the best movies ever made..
I disagree, I like this version, the other version gets "too much with the stuff"
The other version fills in the blanks that this theatrical version has. I always felt like things were missing.
@@ruthsaunders9507 I only know this version, almost word for word, I think I've seen the other version once. I don't feel the blanks.
@@JakeSoulFreeTravels I always did. Especially in the beginning and end. It felt important character moments were missing and they were.
@@ruthsaunders9507 AHHH, like I said, I know this movie word for word, so for me, there's nothing missing now, it'd be like scenes stuffed in there. heh
Cat's punch is the single best punch in the history of cinema, in my humble opinion.
Hmm, it was awesome but it's hard to beat George McFly's punch when he finally stood up to Biff.
@@ElroyMcDuff It's a good one, yes. As is Bruce Willis's death punch in THE LAST BOY SCOUT and Joe Pesci's leaping uppercut in MY COUSIN VINNY. But IMO Cat wins.
The Hammer!
When I read the title I could already hear Asia saying"Nope, nope, not me, get me back on dry land." haha
Explorers have only explored about 5% of our oceans, so there is 95% left unexplored - so who knows what's down there.
Cheese fountains
The first movie that used cgi liquid effects, the next movie was Terminator 2, then it was everywhere. There's also an extended directors cut that's over 4 hrs long. It changes the story quit a bit as far as the aliens reason fot checking them out. Great movie!
This is the most important movie to watch on 4K, the picture clarity is INSANE, looks like a brand new movie
''If he had 24 marbles, he lost 23 of 'em! He crazy!'' Lol! Best comment ever!
He made this after terminator and aliens, and I love that he brought Michael biehn along for the ride in all 3 movies. ❤️
The JC/MB trilogy lol
Woman sees - octo-angel
Man sees - butterfly-squid
Yeah, sounds exactly right. 🤣
I'm glad y'all finally watched this!!!!
Great reacton, kiddos, to one of my favorite movies. I WOULD suggest watching the extended version. The ending makes a lot more sense!
Ha! Someone else who says kiddo. I have a friend in Kuwait who was a little offended I called him kiddo because he’s in his 40’s. I told him not to worry unless I call him sugar or hun.
@@fxbear Yeah, I'm at that age that anyone under 50 is still a kid to me.
Another awesome movie, the scene where he brings her back to life is so good, Ed Harris rules. So does the actress
He did that whole scene looking directly at a camera, acting toward nothing. That’s masterful.
Mary Elizabeth Mastroantonio.
She was Marian in the Kevin Costner Robin Hood movie.
@@Frostrazor tony Montanas sister as well ❤️🩹
The male lead in this movie was Ed Harris and he was in "Apollo. 13". He was the guy in charge of the rescue effort back at N.A.S.A.
He was the one who said
"Failure is not an option"
The guy who was in charge of the department in "Hidden Figures" was Kevin Costner.

i cannot believe you did not know it was a James Cameron film this is one of my fave films luv this reaction
I get to watch this movie with you guys. Awesome. This film has so much humanity. It's a love story.
They watched the wrong version, though. Should have watched the special edition.
Cameron, he always does it- gives these incredibly human stories, emotions we can all recognize, wrapped up in fantastical circumstances and settings.
The Abyss is such an underrated gem! At the time, it had mixed reviews by critics but, it became a cult classic. The movie was awesome!
SCREW the critics. I learned to pay the critics no attention DECADES ago.
@@cashflowhustles Yeah me too! There are so many movies I love that critics just panned!

stay Awesome ⭐️
One of the most scary most inspiring movies from our childhoods.
You have to put these 2 on your list : EMPIIRE OF THE SUN - THIS IS SPINAL TAP 👍 👍
Mankind knows more about the moons surface then we know about our ocean depths
So far just 27 people have managed to reach the deepest point in the ocean, which is the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench near Guam in the Pacific. Some 10,900 meters straight down, or 35,800 feet.
James Cameron did it as the third person in history, in a so-called "batyscaphe" of his own own design (yep, James Cameron, the dang film maker has been to the deepest bottom of the oceans). He did it in 2012, 52 years after the first two blokes had done it on the same trip way back in 1960.
Anyway, they haven't yet encountered any NTI critters like in this movie down there.
well as far as we know they havent'.
You guys are so much fun. You make me smile, this is a Great movie recommendation. I look forward to watching more with you. 🍿 ❤
the actress who played the character lindsey also played Tony Montana's sister in Scarface
A stupendous film that is completely underrated for no apparent reason. This flick should be WAY more popular.
Most of the lead actors hated working on the movie to the point that they won't talk about it. That's a big reason it isn't more popular.
@@ryanjacobson2508 It's a shame since the film is excellent.
I'd forgotten about this movie until y'all done it on Patreon and I just loved it!!!💯❤️💯 👏👏
I usually don't like the extended edition of movies but, much like the LOTR movies, this is one where it adds a lot of info. Glad you guys finally watched it, I do recommend checking out the extended edition, even if you just watch the scene at the bottom of the abyss where the "aliens" explain to him what is going on. : ]
The actors went through hell filming this. But honestly the whole cast and crew did an amazing job.
54:30 That's a part of CPR now.
You guys need to watch the Directors Cut, there is a huge bit of footage that was taken out, that changes the entire movie
Agreed, the movie makes so much more sense and gives you more to think about regarding us and humanity and how we are treating the earth.
@@julesb1970 there is a 4k version hitting theaters soon
Happy 35th Anniversary The Abyss!!🎞📽
This is Cameron in his prime, Terminator, Terminator 2, Aliens and Abyss are some of the best pieces of cinema ever filmed.
"This must be the mothership" You were on the right path!
Beautiful movie. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Stunning effects for that time frame. Im so happy you 2 watched this. ❤
Man this movie was magical for me. Loved the whole movie. Its definitely a memorable one. Now yall need to check out another thriller called Negotiator with Samuel L Jackson and Kevin Spacey.
Another good underwater movie is Sphere, based on a novel by Michael Crighton.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m so excited to see y’all’s reaction.🎉
ah...one of the best movies ever made. don't see enough of this one
Yep, Ed Harris was in Apollo 13.
Appolo 13 is Ed Harris ( he was in This movie, Hidden figures is Keven Costner. I saw this movie when I came out and the special effects were cutting edge. It was a prelude to the Technology James Cameron used In Terminator 2.
One of my favorite movies. 🍿
Another fave movie of mine guys. I miss you guys watching sopranos too ngl 😂
Great reaction to a great film. I've always loved this movie. This was the theater cut. The director's cut has significant additional scenes that put a different spin on the movie and let you see what message James Cameron wanted to convey, FYI. (This comment edited to fix a typo)
I always get teary eyed when Bud brings Lindsey back from drowning
Ground breaking special effects for it's time and it still holds up fairly well.
They have worked at oxygenated liquid for deep sea diving. Had some success with it but I think it's still in development.
Yes, Ed Harris was in Apollo 13!!!
This movie is incredible!
ED HARRIS (VIRGIL) WAS IN "APOLLO 13" AS HEAD OF HOUSTON GROUND CONTROL. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
He was in THE RIGHT STUFF... similar to APOLLO 13, But even better, about fighting for safety and rights and a true story of the first astronauts .
