Thank you Glen. I have watched this video many times, it was really one of the first videos that had a big effect on my life's path, my focus to be a frame drummer! Grateful for your continued inspiration.
I have just arrived from a master class on frame drums he gave in Casa da Música do Porto, Portugal. I must say he is a really great teacher and a fabulous musician. We learned bohdran techniques, tar and shakers. He also taught us how to do overtone singing. I enjoyed it a lot and I recomend the attendance to other events by him.
It's fascinating - this DVD was my original inspiration to play frame drums, and when I first saw it, it was like magic - completely baffling. Now, after many years of frame drumming and having spent some time with Glen and studied with him, I can understand most of what he's doing and indeed play a lot of it - albeit not all quite at this tempo :) I still come back to the video to check my technique sometimes, and still wonder at it - even after many years, the magic remains...
We love Glen's work. Layne Redmond his first long term student who he performed with then became a teacher as well and is the inspiration for our channel!
he's slightly pressing his finger down while sliding directly after the hit at the top. the slide motion allows him to create some sort of length of the note, and the change in pitch comes from him pressing inward and letting off.
That "woooooooo" sound he make son there blows my mind!! At first I was a skeptic thinking that there wasn't much you could do on a frame drum. You have proved me wrong and I thank you! Amazing!!
I stumbled on this video by accident about a month ago. I've been listening to frame drum music ever since, and I am starting to learn how to play as well. Thank you for the upload!
The drum that Glen is playing in that video is an [ET-8422-GV]-BODHRAN, PRETUNED, GLEN VELEZ, 22" DIAMETER, 4" DEPTH, VENWOOD NATURAL, which uses a fixed Fiberskyn Diplomat head.
The drum that Glen is playing in that video is an [ET-8422-GV]-BODHRAN, PRETUNED, GLEN VELEZ, 22" DIAMETER, 4" DEPTH, VENWOOD NATURAL, which uses a fixed Fiberskyn Diplomat head. The technique he's using can be applied to many different hand percussion instruments and is often referred to in the Latin world as a "moose call", "lions roar", or "finger rub". A more formal name would be "Glissando", to glide from one pitch to another.
A common way to achieve this effect is to lightly wet your middle finger (either with sweat or saliva) and, using your thumb for support, slide it across the surface of the head with a certain amount friction. Since this technique requires consistent pressure to produce the effect, it may be easier to use wax to get a more fluid sound, especially for beginners.
@codgerfiasco The deeper frame drums are called Buffalo Drums. I have a Remo 14" with a graphic on it. The graphic also ads a bit more deeper sound because it is an additional layer on the skin.
amazingly tastfull performance.Thats a really deep shell compared to the ones remo sell these days. does anyone know what diffrence if any there is between deep and shallow frame drums? is that 18" or 16"?
Actually, this is a bodhran judging by the fact that it is a Remo and the video shows a deep drum when it shows the side view and it has a 4 way cross member on the back. The Remo Daf drum does not have this feature and also has attached jingles which this drum does not. However that said, this must be an older Remo because I can't find anthing like it on their current website.
I've just purchased a Remo 22" Frame Drum like this one although the Rim on his looks slighly deeper than mine. I don't know how he gets that sound when he slides his fingers across the drum.
Does anybody know how he produces this overtone-flute like sound in the beginning? I've tried simply immitating what I see but it doesent work... Oh, and thanks for uploading this great video!
Glen brother, would you mind showing me the left hand fingering techniques please in another video , and perhaps explain the technique just on the articulation hand tone hand please.
Thank you Glen.

Many years ago, this video changed my life
absolutely stunning, how he put the sweet point of the drum and make it sound
amazing. Was lucky enough to take a class with him yesterday. He is an marvelous teacher.
wow.
First time seeing both a frame drum played, and Velez.
Thanks! Now I want one!
We love Glen's work. Layne Redmond his first long term student who he performed with then became a teacher as well and is the inspiration for our channel!
Wow.... Rhythmic fingers... Beautiful ... Amazing talent ...

Glen Velez is the master. Thanks for posting this, I've never seen him perform "in person" before, only via CD or Radio.
That "woooooooo" sound he make son there blows my mind!! At first I was a skeptic thinking that there wasn't much you could do on a frame drum. You have proved me wrong and I thank you! Amazing!!
Beautiful!
Now that’s a percussionist! Wish I had on some live gigs!!!

fantastisch und meisterhaft - absolut faszinierend !
Dance to it, then you can feel the talent right down to your bones, not just your ears.
I just discovered him, and it's awesome !
That was amazing, especially the ending!

soooooo good!
Fantastic indeed!
I love it :)
I Love your art !!!
the ending is perfect
@codgerfiasco Deep shells have much more 'Dum". That one's much bigger than 18", probably closer to 28".
It's not unlike making a wine glass ring. Your "skidding" finger makes resonance.
AMAZING!
Very Kool
@nimajnebenneb: Not in this case. And some Irish bodhran players don't use tippers (i.e., sticks); just their hands.
How many inches is the diameter of this drum?
Is it tunable?
Amazing!!!
The master.
he talks with the instrument, I know that language!
you can hear where dub gets its inspiration from in this performance
Sounds so Amazing :DDDDDDDDDDDD
amazing!
yup
Remarkable
The best!!
Ha! That is hilarious!!! Good one!

Nice.....
How different Glen looks now. More relaxed and refined movements, IMHO.

yea!!!!!!
Very nice
@MrFair Thank's dude, will try it :-)
Remo drums are usually synthetic. I have not seen one that is not.

The day I get this good I'll know for sure I'm King Sh?t !!!!!
you are the best, where are you?
Is that a teaditional Irish Bohdran? What is the name of that drum?
Can anyone help me, I have a frame drum that has started to cup/warp, what could I do to straighten it again?
Le croisillon derrière l’apparente à un bodhran, un bodhran de grande taille...
Could you please tell me which Remo frame drum this is? It's not a bodhran is it?
@PorroFirst In which moments?
Look up David Kuckhermann, he has a set of very good instructional DVDs.
One Channel ?
@glorplaxy missed tombak!
FFF........................ brillaint.
Glen brother, would you mind showing me the left hand fingering techniques please in another video , and perhaps explain the technique just on the articulation hand tone hand please.
It's a Persian Daf finger snapping technique. There are several videos on how to do it. Search for Frame drum finger snapping technique.
@glorplaxy
I play like this style with bodhran.
Medicine!
@codgerfiasco Looks like 22''
Is it me or does that drum make a light saber sound
@glorplaxy bodhran is played with a stick
Yeah. It's insane, right?
Jeez man. What do you have for breakfast?
is this a duff
You just push down on the head and move your finger across it
