Shields me from all the garbage concerns, frustration and anxiety associated in my life.
idk it's just therapeutic
The funniest thing about guitar gear snobbery/debates is that when you play gigs/realease records .... no one cares what gear you're using!
99% of people that go to gigs/listen to music literally dont care - people just want to hear music they enjoy- regardless of how much your equipment costs or what its made of.
Ultimately it's us in the guitar community that are getting our knickers in a twist over this weird valve/solid state debate- and if the equipment you use inspires you, why does it matter?
Nice demo Dave, and dont let the gear snobs get you down👍
I care, and I stand. Proud to be one of the 1%
@@dasaucemaster274 so when you go see a band live or listen to their music and you're liking the songs, but then you find out they're using crappy gear, do you stop liking them?
@@dudeincredible5459He probably does. You won't believe how dickheaded these '1%ers' can be.
@@dasaucemaster274 spend more money than necessary on amps, the rest of us will enjoy actually evolving
This level of guitar brilliance is much appreciated.
Great video! Love that you're standing up against the snobbery. More guitar players need to hear this. And great playing as always!
Fuzz knows no bias, it just wants to be loud!
JHS 3 Series Fuzz has a bias control though, so..... well here we are 😂
my MXR Variac fuzz as well.. and it does sound better though valve… I swear, I’ve just plugged it in into Tube 15 by Harley Benton and then my Katana 50… and yes, through Katana it sounds like a peace of …
What’s the point of listening to someone from UA-cam? Better to compare on a real amps
Love your playing and your attitude. Don't change Merry Christmas!
A popular amp in the fuzz-loving stoner/doom community is Sunn Beta Lead. Used professionally by The Melvins, Red Fang, and Kurt Cobain during the Bleach years I believe. Solid state!
Thank you!!! So true, couldn't agree more, Dave! I've never had an issue with my SS Fender Champion 40 with any pedal. Blessings to you my friend!
Once you get to my age you realise that the world is full of experts who are strong on opinions but when pressed to do what they profess to be expert in turn out to be completely useless. None so much as in the music industry where when you strip away the technology and look for raw talent they are stark naked. Dave is the real deal -talent aplenty honed by dedication, practice and determination. Scratch the surface and you keep on finding hidden depths (as opposed to the dead head vacuums in the heads of most manufactured stars). It will end in tears eventually for the dead heads (research the decline of the medieval trade guilds for how it ends) as no one wants to deal with them any more. P.S. - it all sounded great to me Dave 🙂.
Deadheads lol. I call them synthetics
Dave the myth buster!! way to show them dave keep rocking!
Fantastic sound and playing as usual of course. Fuzz is probably my favourite guitar effect.
hey great playing! really inspiring licks!
I always like your greeting and being called a person of the tube...
Opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one. It doesn’t matter what people think. On this channel you are the guitar 🎸 guru and you know what you’re doing. That’s why we watch you and appreciate your accomplished playing as well as your commentary on equipment. I’m grateful because I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Thank you 🙏. And I hope you have great holidays 🎄.👍☮️🌞🎸🎵🩷
Wow Dave..... Just an awesome Fuzz video and both amps sound awesome in there own way. Thanks for showing us that awesome pedal and saying I build the best fuzz's 😉. Just remember guy's I'm only the man who makes the paint brushes it's down to the artist to paint a picture of fuzz tones 😎
Thanks for always having the honest thoughts, not just popular opinions
Fuzz is all you need. I even have a t shirt from the pedal show that says it. I've read fuzz is bad into vox amps too. I absolutely adore it 😂
I regularly use a Boss FZ-1w into a Boss Katana or HX Stomp when I have to go direct to PA. Sounds pretty great to me.
And screw the gear snobs, Dave. Unlike them, you actually gig and are successful at it and your band is fantastic.
how does the hx stop effects compare to the katanas ?
What a fantastic video have a good weekend Dave also I had a cold this week ❤😊🤧
I hope you feel better soon. :)
What I hear is:
Valve had a bit more clarity, more treble.
Solid state was darker and warmer.
The fuzz sounded fine either way. Darker like a big muff on solid state, which is either great or not so great.
It works fine either way! Great comparison sir Dave.
It's not the same speakers in both cabs so there will be a small EQ difference
Exactly, speakers units make a difference
Big Muff is also fine with SS, if the pedal itself gets to bassy like some 2 knob versions just eq or add an eq behind it, or a boost type pedal like a TS to get some mids and treble back, doesn’t matter if the amp is valve or ss.
Solid state Dave on a rant brilliant, well played, I liked them both.
Great video Dave, lovely tones and as usual great playing. I would love if you could give a little lesson video on your go-to licks when jamming out / improvising. I watch you regularly and try to study your hands and listen closely but I just can't seem to get the licks to sound like when you play them, I think I may be incorrect in the finger placements, let alone the possibility that string muting might be what I'm doing wrong haha. Licks like the one at 6:50 for instance! How do you / what are you doing to sound so good doing those fast licks?!
YEEEES HARDTAILS my favorites, mutch love from 🇧🇷
I liked it Dave.
the sexy Les paul and metal looking Flying V chilling at the wall thou
I agree about solid state amps even though I love my valve amps, I gigged with a Jazz Chorus amp for two decades in clubs and it never failed me and loved any pedal you could throw at it. I do play through my Fender Deluxe every day at home though. It is my favorite amp still but it never leaves my house.
Fuzz sounds great through my pathfinder and Katana once dialled in, great vid btw 👌
thanks for the myth busting Dave
To my ears the SV20 retained a little more cut with the fuzz then the HDFX. But, both still sounded good, and EQ is there to dial into what situation you need - so all good to me!
I personally have never used a solid sate amp- still I enjoyed the informative video with you creative style of playing Dave - Rock on Buddy
A really good face melting. Love it
All Hail Dave !!!
I use my CR120 with my pedal board, and have fuzz up front of the chain, the amp loves the Fuzz God 4 pedal, it islike sheer bliss. Great seeing the Mighty Red Oswald out again in video form, love that guitar.
Hello
Good points and I totally agree. I have always used solid state amplifiers both modulation amplifiers and hybrid amplifiers. Marshall AVT 150H with Custom 4x12 and Roland Jazz chorus and Fender Mustang V mark II top with Fender Mustang 4x12. Balckstar ID TVP 100 H with Marshall 1960A 4x12. Boss Katana mark I 100 H and Custom 4x12. I have recently acquired a Bugera Infinium V55HD to test for the first time a tube amplifier which was a B-stock from Thomann which I got for SEK 3900 ie about £295.
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I’m no electronics expert but Valve amps are either class A or Class AB more pure signal and solid state amps are class D that are more efficient and work off impulses instead of direct to output tube. The exception is the Katana which is solid state class AB which is probably why it sounds so good
My fourteen fuzz pedals all sound glorious through my one amp - a fender digital mustang gtx. Rock on, Dave!
The MG sounds great!
Thanks Dave!🍕🍺🤣🤙
I like the solid state on the clean channel with fuzz the best!
So good to hear someone of your abilities and experience weighing in on this nonsense. I’ve unsubbed and stopped watching several large channels as I got so unbelievably tired of that attitude.
My first "Dave is right" moment was when I connected 5mm EHX 2.5W SS poweramp to a 12" cab with Celestion Greenback speaker 😀. Then I built a reamp box and added my favourite amps models running on my laptop (NAM plugin). Then came various mini preamps (Mooer) and Mojomojo PG as preamp too. I still love my Lionheart but SS is great, reliable and super cheap. And sounds killer.
Nice. I love running my EHX 5mm pedal from a USB power bank. Portable amp! I often use it for night time practice through a 10" creamback.
Great video and yes, my fuzzes sound great on my katana. I do remember an Andertons video where they compared a fender deluxe tube vs tonemaster and all was the same except with fuzz. Maybe it’s with certain amps. Dunno? Cheers mate!
dont let the bastards gey you down Dave, people will always talk shite❤🤟😎🎸
Nothing wrong with Squier. I have a CV 50's Stratocaster and it's fantastic 😀
if Dave plays it,o my word it will sound good
Absolutely love your defiant ranting raving and playing. I am one of those marshall mullard middle finger types. You just blew the crap out of the crap good man. Recently bought a line6 spider v60 for a couch potato amp. Sounds like a modeling amp 😆 until I got to the gibson L6! Wow solid state modelling solid state! Monstrous! I remember that amp from the late 70s. What a great accompaniment amp for my tc ditto looper. I am a big fan of Kings X ( beatles droning D thing). Ty wouldn't tell what he was using in a guitar player mag interview back in the day but I watched one of his friends at the Uptown in KC Missouri a band called Stick (heavy bag, album name) he was using Ty's fender bassman and told me that Ty used a Gibson L6 solid state! Now he uses Orange ss amps Give em hell mate.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
A man's taste is not open to disputation, this is one of the oldest 'wise sayings' in our world. This applies to solid state amps/valve amps and so forth: I bought a Katana 100 watt Mk! (the first version) and this to me represents their finest version of this amp. In fact Dave influenced my choice from his demonstration of the 50 watt a few years back: I was playing with a Vox Tony Bruno valve amp and I sold that - not because the amp was 'bad' but because the 100 watt Katana provided everything I needed and it was easier to carry about! Try out effects, find something that pleases your ears and to hell with everything else. Good point Dave!
Got to give it to you Dave, the Mg sounds beer at his end of the Tube..👍🇦🇺
Dave, as always such a cool video man.
Is this a jtm45 on your left?? Are we getting vid about it at any point? Cheers
Its a bluesfaker. Its actually a marshall master reverb 30. :)
I’ve taped a valve/tube to the back of my Katana 50, so when someone tells me I need “glass” in an amp to make it sound good, I just point to the back of my amp and keep playing great sounding music! 😅😅😅 Point made Dave! Great tones as always. 👍❤️🎸🎶✌️
this makes me want to get a fuzz pedal
Well im gettin' one!!
Nice thanks Dave you rock as usual and these myths need to be debunked!
They both sound absolutely phenomenal, I do think both amps here are set up a little different which I think might throw off listener. Sounds like was a bit more presence set up on the Valve amp that made it brighter that I think people relate with clarity.
Just 2 cents but anyways cheers dude
The sound is coloured mostly by the speakers…. I once had a HH-ic100 with a straight 4x12 original speaker cabinet. The most deep, rich and clean sound I’ve ever heard. So was the «sustain-effect» best fuzzy sound ever!! Marshalls tube amps are pretty dull in comparision.🤘🤘
Old tube radios have a nice natural compression when squeezed, far better than Marshalls🤣🤣
They definitely sound different to me, but they both certainly offer their own thing as well. I've just sold my very first valve combo since I found an older SS Peavey for cheap, and I sort of miss the valves but not nearly as much as I thought I might. My fuzzes sound generally less smooth and more gnarly with SS but there's lots of new tones I never quite had before, I can get huge lightly driven tones, and they clean up just as well etc.
Tldr I aim to have both SS and valves in my rig
Clean channel with fuzz on ss amp was best to my ears. The valve amp sounded good though but nought wrong with the MG for me. I like the reliability and consistency of ss amps agreed but I have heard some beautiful sounding valve jobs but I don't like their delicacy, inconsistency and maintenance expense.
I love my digital Fender Rumble LT25 bass amp for home practice - so versatile and a lot of fun and sounds like a bass amp to me. I also have a Boss Katana Bass 210 amp and a Katana 100 Mk2 and they are great too. Buy what you like to use and hear not what the valve snobs say you must have to be cool.
Thanks, Dave.
I’m pretty sure Dave could make any amp sound good. I wish I could play like that. Cheers everyone.
I think you've just solved a black Sabbath tone problem for me :-)
Dave has so much gleeful enthusiasm I keep expecting a voice to float up from downstairs: 'David! David, didnt you hear me!? Your tea's going cold!'
Fuzzes love anything BUT only the germanium ones really clean up to that lovely glassey tone. Keep shooting down the gear snobs Dave!
Sound is in the hearer's ears... I hate DS-2 through the Golden Plexi. It sounds like I put my speaker deep into someone's butt and the sound is coming from there... so muffled.. But Dave loves it and he can work with that. That's the thing...
That Studio vintage resembles John Frusciante's Major 😮 Do you ever plan to pair it with the Silver Jubilee that you loaned 🤔
If i can ever get a jubilee on loan definitely.
I like solid state amps and modling amps. I have one tube amp that when I got it, it needed to be repaired, and I used it for a few months and it needs to be repaired again. It is a Mesa Boogie, so not some cheap amp, but I will take a solid state amp any day. The Mesa did sound good, but not worth the headache, it is a 4x10 combo so not the easiest thing to move around, even with the casters it is has. It is just too expensive to run a tube/valve amp, nevermind how long the wait time for repair is.
Fuzz through solid state… personal favourite combination …Catalinbread Fuzzrite through a Peavey Bandit Solo Series (Teal Stripe) beautiful 🤩 🎵 ❤
All hail the solid state amp. I have owned Lab Series, Sessionette and Tech 21 amps... all great.
I gotta try my fuzzes into my Crush35RT... my experience with that amp is that the Digitech DS1 clone (Hothead) sounds good because of the bass knob. My go to is the MXR 78 Custom because I guess it's like a Keeley modded DS1 with the "crunch" setting. In both cases, adding lower mids. It can take a bit of hunting but I'm sure you can find dirt pedals that sounds great with solid state. For me, DS1 circuit... who would've thought! Next I'll see what fuzz I like with it best.
People just repeat what they've been told. I personally never understood the theory of " valve amps are better". Do I tell people my beliefs? No because it's not worth the arguments. Thankyou for speaking up👍
Dave, spot on! BUT! 🙂 My 2x12 valve amp sounds immense with a fuzz pedal, way better than any of my solid state amps. However, solid state amps are mpre reliable, guaranteed (mostly) to produce the tones you heard last time you plugged in. The epiphany I had two years ago was buying a VERY cheap fuzz pedal and, initially, plugging into a solid state amp. Good lord, I nearly lost my b0l0x! Playing same pedal through my 2x12 valve amp sounds FO incredible it just doesnt sound better than the solid state amp!
I recognized years ago that a Solid State will take any effect perfectly well actually that good that I stucked to it.
I agree, fuzz sounds great through any type of amp...
Solid state, digital or valve doesn't matter if you can play then that's all that matters...and Dave sure can play!
That's a fact.
😎👊🏼⚡🎸
I love this 😂
You're so right! I hate all the snobbery in the guitarist community!
They both sound great but the sv20 just sounds a bit more satisfying. It has more clarity to my ear but I would gig with either amp.
Some people gave me the same crap for using short scale guitars, they are inferieur, it has to be a Telecaster. I happen to like the warm tone and playability. Love your no nonsense style.
It is weird i got an ivenez fuzz and it only spounds good with an sg and a smal crate amp with is solid but its the only one that is ok
I theorize the maker of that myth saw your "Why I prefer Solid State amps to Valve amps" video (as you stated in 3:17) and made myth as a rebuttal of sorts, unless the myth came out before your video 😆
On all seriousness, I think that the comparison would've been fairer if you used a head switcher, so that you could've used the same cab for both heads (possibly different speakers and dust covers also affect the overall tone)
PS: I think that you should put quotations on the title (except for the " - WHAT?????????") so that it would appear that you're quoting
Back when I was new to pedals I got a TS clone, having heard they were the go to pedal for great tones. Little did I know they could only be used in valve amps due to them "pushing the tubes". I played it for years through a solid state seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that it shouldn't have been working at all let alone sound as great as it did. I struggle every time I see that myth perpetuated so I'm really pleased you've made this video, thank you. If you could do a video of a TS through both amps I'd certainly feel validated in my beliefs!
I have a Boss Katana 100 mkII and a HX Stomp… my Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Mini sounds awesome through both of these… as does my Rams Head RI Big Muff… as does my Octavia clone! Also, I’ve previously played through a Fender Twin for 10 years so I’d like to think i know what I’m talking about.
I have the same amp and use the built in fuzz pedals
Hey Dave! Have you seen the boss ir 2? What are your opinions on that device?
Not tried it yet. :)
I absolutely agree. But Fuzz + Buffer is a really bad idea! Keep shining Dave.
hekk both sounded super mate!
ya i got a IYV distressed LP clone that screamed "greeny"....less than 200USD....IYV did most of the work and i added the correct knobs and did a simple wireswap on the neck pup....and flipped the whole pup so the screws face the bridge...
i now have a convincing "greeny/moore" for wayyy less than 50k......even the 1500 epi wants for theirs lol!
o ya i installed probuckers in a monoprice LP special2 clone....the "purist patrol" will have a cow now hahaha!!!
It actually sounded fatter and heavier through the mg!!! Nice!!
That tone with the MG clean and the fuzz, good god!!!
Sounds like valve amp copium from valve snobs with a comment like "fuzz doesn't sound good through a solid state amp!" 😂
Thank you Dave!!! Sounds didn't know how much$$ you spent!! You are 100% right and they are 100% WRONG!!!
How many valve amps do you own? The mini plexi and I think you have a fender blues junior too?
I own two. This Marshall and a tubescreamer amp.
Hi, I'm trying to emulate the sound of Jimi Hendrix, can you give me some advice on how to set the EQ of a Marshall DSL amplifier?
Sorry. I have no expirence with that amp so I have no idea.
@@thedavesimpson Can I ask how you set up your amplifier?
What does he say when he says "....Tube" when he adresses his audience? Im English and still can't make it out
Sounds good Dave! What fuzz are you using?
SunDial Fuzz made by ME ,😎
@@Hubcap_John Sounds great!
@@stevestarr6395 cheers dude 😎
Dear Dave, your words from about 18 minutes of this video should be set in stone, maybe everyone who likes electric guitar, effects, amplifiers, speakers, etc. understood that everything is not as it was in the past. Nowadays, it is possible to really have fun and play for decent and reasonable money. Anyone who is a professional musician and makes a living by creating and playing can undoubtedly pay extra for, for example, higher quality and more durable products. I'm an old (almost) amateur and I really enjoy watching you on YT. I wish you a nice pre-Christmas weekend and I look forward to the next video. Pavel Czech Republic.
❤😊❤ awesome FUZZ
Dave, if you're still responding to posts for this vid, I'm wondering if you could perform an experiment with one of your Katanas.
Rob Chapman once stated in one of his vids that Roland confirmed to him that if you dimed the volume on the Katana, you could get the simulated sound of a cranked amp.
I have a Roland Cube 80XL. The manual for it has a block diagram for the signal chain inside the amp and it shows the volume inside the amp sim block. I guess I'm assuming that they haven't changed that arrangement.
Can you run one of your Katana's line out into one of your amp heads (front end or effects loop in) to see if you can get that cranked amp sound out of it while using the head as a bit of a master volume? For all I know, this has already been done, but I haven't seen it.
I’ll see what i can do. :) personally though i have tried it and didn’t hear a difference.
@@thedavesimpson Thanks, Dave. I trust the ears of a guy that produces the tone that you do. If the Katana did what was claimed, I'll bet you would've heard it.
@@thedavesimpson I'm being dumb. I forgot that some (all?) Katanas also have a Speaker Out, similar to my 80XL. I hear that the difference between them is that my 80XL shares the output between the amp's speaker and an extension cab while the Katanas cut the output to their own speakers in favor of sending it all to the cab.
My point being that you could just hook up to a cab that you trust to deliver everything that the amp is doing. I think the class A/B chip amps in the Cubes and Katanas are great, although I don't know how they stack up to the power section of a full size head. The speaker in the 80XL is good, but I consider it to be the weakest point in the amp. I say that because my Cubes actually sound better through headphones (at practice levels through a sweet pair of open back headphones).
The only thing is that you'd be listening to a cranked amp for real ⚡🎸⚡
Comparing this to a Katana with pedal and internal effects and effects loop might be interesting.
Carry on like this Dave and ‘That Pedal Show’ will never invite you onto their show, ever! 😂😂
They said years ago they wouldn’t have me on anyway.
My germanium fuzz face sounds bloody ace into my 15watt Marshall soild state amp.
The orange crush60’s gain knob is pretty much a fuzz.
The Mythbuster 😎😎😎
Muffbuster! 😂
One of the things I love on your channel is the sounds you get out of all your amps.
Something that also pisses me off is that “solid state is too quick” like what the hell does that mean, do valve amps have input lag? And then you get a a digital thing that has the smallest input lag ever and somehow it’s noticeable and people complain about it too? Like what the hell do guitar players want
Cork-sniffers gonna cork-sniff. Leave em off. Young people are living in a golden age of high quality, affordable gear and could bring about a new era of guitar based music
I actually preferred the fuzz in the clean channel 👍👍
Way to debunk that junk Sir!! 👍👍🎸
Do you live in a house or in apartment? My neighbors who by the way suck hard would start a fight in five minutes if I would rock a valve amp througn a 4x12 like that
