    It depends on the size of the colony, but even a large colony outside the sun will heat the guano and help neutralize it and the rain will wash it into the soil. Most colonies will not require any attention under the bat house. We've had people collect the soil with the guano and replace it using it to enrich potting soil. We've also had some put planters underneath them. One guy collects his and puts it on his garden, but he has a colony of about 1000 in several bat houses.

    I have a ton of bats living in my carport. If I put up bat houses will they move into them if I put them up high or do I even need to woory about it? They seem to be roosting inside the sofit beam that runs down the front of the carport. I imagine that sofit is filling up with guano, so I need to figure out how to clean it up without loosing my bats. Hundreds of bats are a sight to see in the early mornigs and late evenings incredible! Their take off spot is only about 7 maybe 7 & 1/2 feet high

    I love the design and construction of this house. I was wondering what is the biggest house or kit that you make?? Im Looking to give a lot of space for a decent colony to eventually grow into a colony of around eight hundred to a thousand bats. There has been alot of tree clearing and want to provide a place that they can call There home or homes to make up for the forest loss. Plus it would be an awesome sight to see as they go on their nightly flight. Hopefully people in the neighborhood will see what I'm doing and hopefully do the same.

      The 4 chamber fully finished bat houses can be mounted back to back on a single steel pole (schedule 40 2"ID black pipe) and we sell the bracket for that as well. Those two 4 chambers could easily accommodate 1000 bats. As for our kit, we are working on a 4 and possibly 5 chamber kit we want to release soon. Two of those would hold 800 and 1000 bats respectively. Check out or estore at estore.habitatforbats.org

    I live in Northern Kentucky. We have little and big brown bats around here and was interested in one or more houses to allow for the development of a big colony or colonies. Insects eat us up at night and white nose is decreasing their numbers. Any assistance in this effort is highly appreciated and I thank you for your time. Oh was wondering if there is any way to make an old horse barn more attractive to bat's?? I was working behind the open door and only two came out at dusk.

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 7 років тому

      The best way to make sure bats remain in your area is to improve their roosting opportunities. Bats like warm dry places to roost that are secure from predators. Bat houses can do this or in your case if you know bats are roosting in your barn you could improve the area they are roosting by isolating it from being disturbed. You could add (in the winter while they are gone) baffles in the area to increase the roosting surface, but you have to be careful NOT to insulate it from warmth. i.e. they may be roosting on the specific wall because it gets warm in the sun. In a case like that you would want to add chambers that all were exposed to that inside wall, not layered on top of it isolating them from it.

  • @TheSeancassady
    @TheSeancassady 10 років тому

    I see how the lines routered out on the initial piece give the bats something to grab onto for climbing up into the top but I am not understanding what the point is of the baffles? There are holes for them to pass through but then there is nothing for them to hold onto unless there are in the back most chamber where the grooves are cut.

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 10 років тому

      Annony Mouse Grooves are cut over the entire interior surface. Both sides of each baffle and on the inside front and inside back. The baffles simulate crevasses for the bats to crowd into. The spacing is 3/4" (19mm) which is a sweet spot for crevasse roosting bats. Bats will roost in crevasses as small as 1/2" and as large as 1 1/2". The added benefit of 3/4" spacing is that paper wasps will not build nests in a space that small. They will build in 1" or larger spaces.

  • @davidf.8631
    @davidf.8631 8 років тому

    I didn't see any groves on the two baffles. What do the bat's claws grip onto in the center chamber? For the outer chambers are groves only made on one side? Also, what is the space measurement for the chambers between plywood boards?

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 8 років тому

      There are grooves cut approx every 1/2". You just can't see them in the lighting of the video. We use 3/4" spacing for our chambers.

    Question.. Does bat attractant really work? I bought some but I’m a little leery about using it.

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 5 років тому

      No, there is no known way to attract bats. I've asked every bat biologist I know (dozens) and any new bat experts I meet and the story is the same. If you spread bat guano from another colony, you could be telling new bats to stay aware too. No research has proven that bats are intentionally going to break their pattern of behavior and fly toward something because it is attracting them. They are attracted to bugs and whatever looks like food to them.

    Is the ply waterproof or do you recommend painting with a waterproofer?

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 7 років тому +1

      You should paint the exposed surfaces with a good exterior latex paint. The plywood we use is rated for exterior use, it does not delaminate when exposed to moisture long term. You should look for plywood stamped as "EXT" or "Exterior". Plywood with a rating of "Exposure 1" is not sufficient. However, you should avoid pressure treated plywood.

    Question:
    I want to purchase a 4 chamber house for southwest Virginia, average July temp is 82 with high humidity. I want to place house on west facing side of a brick house, should I get the regular, medium color house or the cold weather house?

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 4 роки тому

      You should be OK with a medium color in that area, but placement should be facing South to SE and catch the morning sun keeping sun until some time after noon. While a bat house on the west side of the house might be used by a bachelor colony or some species that might normally roost in trees, it would not be attractive for a larger colony of females. Bats prefer the temperature between 85 and 100 degrees and the morning sun goes a long way to warming the roost in the mornings. If you are in the mountains, higher altitude and thus lower temps, you can go to a medium dark color.

      Repeating answer from a different video... With a persistent colony of 100 bats, you could get a reasonable amount, hard to say. The wind, sunlight drying it up and missing the target will reduce the amount you collect. I have seen a healthy colony of around 400 bats produce roughly a 2" blanket of guano on the ground for a diameter of about 3 feet their first year.

    Hey what’s a good way to relocate bats? We have an issue and don’t want to just “exterminate” them

    • @h4bats
      @h4bats 4 роки тому

      After early August (varies by state so check your local laws) you can exclude bats from areas you don't want them. It's important to wait as they may have pups that are unable to leave on their own until then. An exclusion can be as simple as a netting hanging down over an entry point so they can leave and crawl down (leave the bottom hanging) but when they come back they will land on the net and not be able to re-enter. Or you can use tubes like PVC or even cardboard to create an exit they cannot later return to and climb back up and inside. Good luck and thanks for loving bats!

      James Heasley I have built up to a 9 chamber bat house and still build them for project builds. The challenge is generally hanging them once they get that large. It takes a substantial pole to support it. Placing one on a structure can be a challenge as well due to the size (depth) of the bat house. But they can be quiet successful for a large colony.

      Paper nest building wasps generally desire at least 1 to 1 1/2" space to build a nest, the 3/4" baffle spacing that we use discourages wasps from building inside the bat house. The open weather and small overhangs tend to prevent them from building outside of the bat house. There is no known way to prevent dirt daubers from building mud nests inside a vacant bat house, but they are harmless and once bats occupy the bat house the dirt daubers will leave it alone. Thanks for loving bats!

      Nothing really attracts bats, they are very curious creatures and explore their surroundings looking for good homes, food, water etc... if they are in the area and you put up a bat house they will investigate it and remember it as a good roost location. As for the chicken coop, there should be no reason bats can't be nearby provided the roost is properly located and installed. I'm not sure what you mean by "to the roof". You wouldn't really want to encourage the bats to roost over the chickens... you wouldn't want to get pooped on and neither would the chickens. If you mean outside on top, I suppose you could put a bat house there again provided it is getting proper sun and exposure to get warm enough for the bats.
