Why Flowers dying on Cucumber / Pumpkin plant? | Explained

- A lot of new gardener complain that their cucumber or pumpkin plant has just male flowers and no female flowers. The reason behind this is that the plant has evolved in in such a way that the male flowers come out first. For initial 10-20 days you might not see any male flower. This happens to attract pollinators so that the female flowers do not get wasted. Once the message has spread in the bees community that there is zucchini plant flowering, pollinators start coming to the plant. This is when the females blossom. This reason is applicable even when you are not seeing female flowers on pumpkin, squash, zucchini, gourds or cucumber . Do not worry. Watch this video to learn why you see no female flowers.

Nearly after 45 days provided 15:15:15 NPK 1 tsp on 4/11/2018 & 2 time provided 1 tsp today on 20/11/2018, flower buds have develop on bitter gourd. Main branch have 3 wines developed with plenty of flower buds. Watering done everyday. Plz suggest any precautions to be taken on plant.

i am farmer and raise acres of muskmelon and honey dew melons. i wanted to ask about your views on nitrogen and vines. i mean does feeding vines with a little more nitrogen gets them into stage of producing male flowers only?
I can look it up and see if I get a logical answer for this but I have no practical experience with vines and nitrogen because I have never experimented with it myself.
To much nitrogen will impede blossom set actually. Nitrogen is more so a vegetative fertilizer not a bloom fertilizer!

Hi... the female flowers are turning brown and drying even before growing to the full size and blooming... They are turning brown within few days of showing up. What could be the possible reason and how to fix it.

and how about your views on pinching the ends of the vines?
My personal experience is it's okay if done when plants are 18" plus and are not being grown vertically or they will be to hard to maintain. If growing growing I would recommend pinching :)

Hey leena, yes it is the same case for pumpkin. Pumpkin, torai and cucumber belong to the same family of vegetables. Need not worry. You should be able to see female flowers in another week or two.

My concern is exactly opposite to your views. Sorry for that... Till now I have seen some 15-16 flowers on that and to surprise, all were/are female and not a single male.

Bring neighbor's plant and get them married. After few days you will have lot of baby cucumbers on your plant.

A chemical free way is to use sticky traps but it also might remove the good pollinators, so unless you have major fruit fly outbreak dont use this method. You can use a bait method. Keep vinegar and a ripe fruit (small amount) in a jar covered with a funnel. This will remove fruit flies considerably..
+Garden Up yes thos yellow sticky traps hinders the pollination as honey bees too are severely affected due to them. bait to me is the safest way.

Hi, most of the hybrid variety of rose can give flower around the year given that their is plenty of sunshine, water and a monthly dose of fertilizer. Also, hybrids are easier to grow than desi. When you go to get the sapling ask for 'hybrid rose' variety. In northern India we mostly have floribunda and tea rose variety. Both of them grow most of the year. Good luck!

Yes, it will do well. Only do not over water it. Hibiscus likes less water. once in 3 days in summers and once a week in winters.. Good luck!

Hi. I'm having a little issue with my melon plant. Lots of beautiful female flowers with nice looking fruit keeps coming out but none of the male flower is even coming to opening stage. I could do hand polination. Could u tell me what I can do to get at least 1 male flower to open. Thank you beforehand.
The only reason I can think is nutrient deprivation.. Try adding good quality and rich fertiliser..

Hi Bipin, Koi baat nahi. Fikar mat karo, aur kuch din me female aana shuru ho jayengi. Kuch kuch cucumbers me 10 din se jyada bhi lag jaate hain. Ho sake toh khaad ya compost daal dijiye for extra nutrition.
But I can assure you that females will start coming sooner or later. Do let us when you start seeing the females. Good luck!

Seedling refers to the stage when the seed of a plant has just sprouted. At that stage it has initially 2 leaves . Untill the plant reaches a stage of more than 5-10 leaves, it is is called a seedling. For the second part of your question, I am slightly confused. Do you mean to ask ' when to plant cucumber seeds' ?

If you stay in northern, western or eastern India, suggestions: palak, cauliflower, broccoli, methi, dhaniya, lettuce, chives, kale, radish, carrot and beet root (need semi shaded place). For south India, you can grow any of the above along with tomatoes, bhindi, brinjal, cucumber. If you are starting new as a gardener, start with palak, methi, dhaniya, radish, carrot and beet roots.

Yes, a couple of research papers suggest that vines if over fertilised with nitrogen produce only males. They say that this worsens in extreme summers. Meaning, if it is very hot and you are putting too much of nitrogen, then you won't be able to get female flowers. However, in case you have already over fertilised you can try excessive watering which might help in washing away the nitrogen. I hope this helps. Good luck!
