I have absolutely no knowledge about ships and have barely been around them but this channel is super interesting 👍🏾
I love the daily stuff like this. It gives you a real sense of what a day to day life on board is like.
Individuals not familiar with this industry (including myself) do not realize how massive these vessels really are and so much larger than when my dad was at sea from 1940s-1970s.

I sailed a yacht not that long ago over night in the med and AIS was a damn life saver. Knowing when a vessel is on a collusion course when you can't even see it in the distance allows so much more time to take action and to observe. Generally 90% of the panic was small fishing vessels, who had no AIS and barely visible on radar return, some even had dim or no lights at all! And that is in a relatively small sailing boat doing 1/4 speed of what these container ships do, with easy 360 (depending on sails) view as well.

A lot of vessels that I‘m taking care of are stuck in the Suez Canal at the moment. You have probably heard about the accident. I also spotted one of your sister vessels while checking out vesselfinder (Maersk Ohio). Really crazy what happened there... let‘s hope they will manage to fix it soon. Meanwhile I am sitting at my office desk and watch the different vessels passing Kiel Canal on their way to the Baltic or North Sea. One vessel crashed into the lock about 2 years ago. Got stuck there and they had to cut it out... BUT anyway... :) Greetings from Germany... Obsessed with your vids btw!!!

What a mess.
Watching this I was thinking how crazy difficult it would be to offload containers from that Evergreen vessel without all the port infrastructure. I cant imagine how they would even do that!

Really interesting to see how hard it is to see a little pleasure boat or fishing boat from the bridge - and that was when it was flat calm. I sail in the English Channel and have just installed Class B AIS.
Do you guys default to viewing all A and B type AIS?
I have called ships in the past on Ch16 to make sure they’ve seen me if the CPA looks a little close - most times someone answers and is very nice, occasionally it’s radio silence...

A few questions:
With the Reefer's you carry are they all 100% Electric units, or are some / all of them equipped with their own Engine like most truck based units are?
In the case of units with their own engines, if they lost Ship provided AC power for some time, will they automatically switch to their engines to maintain a safe temperature?
And finally, is there any way of monitoring the Reefer's remotely? eg some kind of standardised monitoring network for them?

Very good video, was not aware of refrigerated cargo being transported. What type of refrigerated products are being transported? Bryan, your videos keep getting better and better, stay safe out there!
Thanks again. We carry anything from frozen fish and chocolate to pharmaceuticals. We even carry blood plasma which is one of our most valuable cargos since it’s responsible for saving so many lives.
You need to invest in a body mounted camera for certain scenes. Very dangerous to go down the ladders with one hand. Great content though!
Yea most of the time I carry various mounts such as a head attachment. I just didn’t have it on me at this time but I agree with your statement

I first caught your channel 6 weeks ago from a "You Tube" suggestion., and have been back-tracking all your vlogs since. I may find the answers eventually in older vlogs; but my questions (perhaps for future vlogs, if not already addressed) are: I know the "ships crew" does not load or secure the cargo containers; but how are the e containers secured above the main deck level, as I do not see any side lashings. When cargo is loaded is it sorted and placed according to Destination, is Weight of container considered, or is the ship balanced / stabilized by by shifting water in ballast tanks. Are all "Reefers'" stacked together so as to connect to ships power source. All are excellent & informative vlogs. Thanks for sharing ⛴ ⛴ ⛴ ⛴ ⛴

Silly question, are those safety shoes with metal cap?! Don't worry I've seen ppl going on deck in flipflops. But they got a bollocking after that. Still great clip. Keep up the good work.
Yes those are steel toe boats. We are required to wear close toed shoes everywhere, and safety toe boots on deck or in the engine room.
thank you for this video. Do you know about the two way radios you carry and how they work? I assume there is some repeater or something since they may not work too well in metal.
I know they are UHF radios and programmed to operate on our own unique frequencies. We do have repeaters located around the ship to help communicate with others through all the steel of the ship. Even with repeaters though we will occasionally have to help relay messages from one crew member to another.

Yes, we were of the Florida coastline and heading due north for awhile on our way to Norfolk.

sir, what is the phrase to confirm that the test of the equipment was successfully?
Is there a specific time of the day when you change the clocks on the ship for the time zones? How is your shift affected if the clocks are moved forward or back while you are on duty?
We advance clock usually one hour at a time when we enter a new time zone. The three watches split up the clock change so will each stand 20 minutes more or 20 minutes less of watch

Them semi auto pins are a nightmare !! I work on a gantry crane and the crew most the time don't unlock them right and they snag the crane !!
Are you referring to the semi auto base twistlocks that hold the containers to the deck and to each other? That’s cool you work the gantry crane. I’ve always wanted to tour one of those and see things from that point of view
@@BryanBoyle yeah so the ships that come into our port aren't as big as yours it's more of the feeder ships so the likes of the conships artic/polar, MSC Malin,BG Ireland them type of ships so they normally use manual twislocks on the deck and from tier 84 upwards the normally use semi auto twist locks, but obviously as a crane driver we are relying on crew to make sure they've unlocked all twist locks for discharging but most the time there's an odd couple they leave locked on and if we aren't careful as a crane driver it can snag load the crane. And it's a good view up there but not when you are loading blind boxes lol, that ain't fun 🤣!!
Oh interesting. So you guys don’t have longshoremen come onboard to unlock the containers and the crew is responsible for that. Yea it’s crazy when those twist locks are left locked. I’ve seen cranes lift entire hatch covers with just one corner still locked
@@BryanBoyle the crew do it at our port they unlock the containers and lash them back on when finished, and yeah they don't half lift some weight the twist locks!! I think most ports have longshoreman I'm not sure why we don't use them on container vessels, I think it's something we are looking at doing but then covid happined so they stopped crew coming ashore and radio men using the man basket on the ships.
how many knots during were traveled during the time lapse? Great channel!
I don’t remember exactly, but we were probably going around 18-20 knots and the video was sped up 20x

How did you get into this career? Been looking into it myself, currently eyeing up the SIU for their unlicensed apprentice program.
I went to the merchant marine academy and earned my license there. You can choose to enter this industry as a licensed officer or unlicensed sailor. I highly recommend you check out the forums on www.gcaptain.com which can help guide you in which direction you’d like to go. I always recommend going the officer route, but that requires much more training, time, and money, but will get you better pay, benefits, and more responsibility onboard.

Make a note on it and report it to chief electrician
The electrician and chief mate are notified immediately. We carry a bunch of spare parts to be able to fix these containers onboard.

You’d be surprised by how many small boats like to come really close to us. Sometimes they even try to cross our bow so close we can’t see them from the bridge anymore.

I have a random question, you see in movies and I have actually heard about cargo ships giving very cheap accommodation to people going the same direction sometimes. That doesn't seem true to me (due to lawyers and liability), but is it?
You mean if cargo ships taking passengers?
Are you ever fully empty or is there always containers on board?
Yes we occasionally are almost completely empty after departing a discharge only port,

We no longer carry passengers in US flagged cargo ships, but other foreign flagged ships may still allow it.

Do you guys still do radar plotting on charts?
we do radar plotting on the ECDIS. It has a feature that lets you plug in ranges and bearing to confirm your ship position. Maersk has gone paperless though so we no longer do this on paper charts
What kind of safety boots do you wear on board ?
I usually wear Red Wings. They are incredibly comfortable once you break them in a bit
I've seen the lifeboat scene before. You get smacked in the head with a fire extinguisher. Then you rack up like a trillion credits, get infected with some disease and escape a water planet.
Give way vessel ? Fishing boat ?
If there is a collision, you will be sure that the fishing boat will argue that he was fishing.
I'm chief officer on a car ferry, and you can trust me, don't mess with fishing boats.

The law of GRT always prevailes? I had to listen it a few times, but you realy said it. I realy hope your making a joke and are keeping to the Colreg system that the rest of all the ships are using.
Yes I of course follow the colregs system. What I’m referring to is the many pleasure craft we encounter that completely blow off the rules of the road. Doing so can have hazardous consequences so they should really be staying clear of us completely and not creating dangerous traffic situations. Too many times have I had to apply rule 2 as the stand on vessel and steer away from these small giveway pleasure craft. Law of GT is a common sense guideline and not an actual colregs rule.
@@BryanBoyle thats true, looks like i miss understood you a bit. Its also a bit of a gentleman thing at sea. If i see a big one coming, even from port side, with 18 to 20 kn i slow down a bit and let him pass. For me on a 90 meter coaster thats a small effort. And ofcourse then there is the fun part of fishing boats with their unpredictable movements. Anyway safe sailing.
Man I hope I’m not conveying the wrong message here. I wouldn’t even apply the law of gross tonnage guideline to a 90 meter coaster. Those are still large vessels that we should 100 percent be following the colregs with at all times. I really meant to say that the law of GRT is more of a guideline for very small boats like pleasure boats and fishing boats to keep clear of us larger cargo ships as they often are zig zagging in unpredictable directions that make it hard to read a traffic situation. Yes all ships have gyms that usually include dumbbells. I will make a video about the gym on my next ship. Some ships have a really nice gyms, others are fairly bare bones.

Does the captain know what is contained inside every container?
No we only know what’s inside hazardous cargo containers (to be able to fight fires from them properly) and a brief overview of what’s inside the refrigerated containers such as frozen fish or blood plasma.
