  • If you want to pass the GED Reasoning through Language Arts test, you need to know what to study. In this third video of a four video series about what to study to pass the GED RLA exam, I give an overview of the seven core skills in the grammar and language category that you'll need to score 145 and earn your GED high school equivalency credential. The skills in this section are important for the selected response portion of the RLA exam as well as in the extended response.

Can I say how much I appreciated your bit about different dialects in the beginning of the video? Hearing someone voice that makes all the difference. Certain academic settings/communities can feel really isolating when your very intuitive way of speaking is seen as less than, or is an indication that you're incompetent. Thanks for all your videos! I take my first exam today!

Good video!! I will say though that the part about dialects only applies to the USA because most people speak English as a first language. I live in South Africa where most people speak English as a second or third language, and grammar and sentence structure are stressed in school. This is because in academic and even corporate settings, it is about being able to clearly communicate ideas in an efficient and professional way. Colloquially, most people don't really care about any of that, but sending e-mails, writing reports and so forth requires a good working knowledge of grammar and sentence structure.

I agree, and in theory grammar, sentence structure, and vocabulary are all taught in schools in the US as well. However, my target audience and the population I have worked with the most are individuals who have had an interrupted education for a variety of factors and who are often members of marginalized communities. In the US that is the most common reason for taking the GED exams. I do understand that internationally people take the GED exams for other reasons, but I wouldn’t position myself as an expert on supporting international GED seekers.

@@michellerevisited Fair enough, I am English home language but we use the British system here in South African, so I need to brush up on the American format for my GED RLA exam. I'm planning to move to the US anyways as soon as I can so hopefully my GED will have some impact on that. I really did find the lesson quite helpful though. You did a good job of explaining what needs to be looked for to pass the exam. I also get where you are coming from in terms of not targeting the international GED seekers.
