      It's not funny though, it's sad. I often felt Voyager writers didn't have the creativity to create interesting characters and species so they brought back others (like Q, ferengi, klingons, borg, barcley) as fan service. Or maybe it was the suits who made these dumb decisions. DS9 worked out so much better without the Borg, despite being deeply connected to the main character loss of wife.

    I just always assumed that, when Doc said he told them everything, he meant everything he thought was important. And I could see him not thinking to mention exactly how the Maquis were integrated into the crew.
    Plus, honestly, the fact that they wasted energy to make uniforms for Maquis who all already had clothes always seemed weird to me. It makes more sense to me for them to wear their existing clothes at least at first. All they'd actually need is a Comm Badge and maybe some sort of marker of their rank.

    I really liked this one, especially how everyone who isn't Barclay is being reasonable; they know Reg is abit unusual but very smart and are willing to hear him out. His boss is also trying to look out for his work/life balance and is trying to help him. Reg is acting irrational but he has his reasons and is ultimately right. I'm glad after the main plot, Reg and his boss seem to have reconciliated given Reg scored with the guys( sister/sister in law?) Plus, Reg is an example of a non neural typical as a heroic type of character and its always nice to see him.

      I always thought dude didn’t like his sister in law and that’s why he set her up with Reg. Like they both annoyed him the same way so he figured they could annoy each other. Reg really seems like the guy to call someone on their honeymoon because he had a great idea.

      It all comes down to judgments and often all that is wrong about a situation is that not everyone is on the same page due to misunderstandings or assumptions. This is why it is a terrible idea to casually diagnose someone. I've always liked and enjoyed Reg, I hear he originated though out of poking fun at Star Trek fans and I hope that isn't true, or at least the character has sufficiently lived down any negative ideals. I think he is one of Trek's great characters.

    I feel like Reg cobbled the Voyager simulation together based on file photographs from before the episode Caretaker, hence things like the absence of Kes, Neelix, and Seven, in addition to the maquis crew being in civilian attire. I don't think the writers would've considered the political implications of Janeway absorbing the Maquis refugees into the crew.

      Yeah plus given the war, the Maquis had been eliminated by DS9 season 5 pre-war I highly doubt anyone would care. During Voy season 4 DS9 season 6 the focus was on the war. At this time Cardassia was likely, according to Sloan's predictions which he didn't see his end coming so.. Cardassia would be an occupied territory, rightfully so given their collaberation with the Dominion. So they just went through a horrible war and I'd guess they'd completely forgotten about the Maquis at this point.

    I've long considered Barclay to be one of the smartest people in Starfleet. He's rightly terrified of transporters (they kill you and send a clone in your place, see Thomas Riker for more details), is extremely aware of how regularly people without plot armor get strange alien diseases and die, and he's come to the very correct conclusion that holodecks are utopia and there is little reason to bother with real life if you have one.

    This episode (of your review) reminded me of a question I have. If Earth has no money. Then how do they decided what apartment or land to give people. Barclay seems to have a very nice apartment. But other apartments could be bigger or smaller. So without money, then how does anyone decided how to divide the limited resources? Just a thought.

    • @Ceece20
      @Ceece20 9 місяців тому +1

      I would contend Barclay's apartment looks about as good, if not very similar, to Admiral Kirk's apartment. It could just be a Star Fleet housing thing where apartments are handed out by family unit size, but if we also remember Janeway's apartment during the final two episodes, hers wasn't that more or less swanky. Maybe a bit bigger, but I could attribute that to notoriety and having a professor position at the Academy.
      Then again, Star Trek kind of skips over the entire economics part constantly in the shows. No need to explain everything when it's just easier to hand wave it as "solved".

    I really enjoyed this episode, Barkley has always been a favorite character of mine and he's always such fun. Plus I really enjoy the character of Pete. You can see he cares about his people, and he really wants to look after Barkley. He values him and when he sees he is wrong jumps right into supporting him when he's getting results and doesn't try to take a lick of credit and offers an apology. Pete is a great manager, and if Barkley had had Pete earlier in his career I could see him having a much better start.
    The idea of the Maqui being given ranks as something to be concerned about is interesting to me. Sure the idea of, "we were able to fold them back into human society, and 'fix," their anti-social behavior," could be a way to spin it, but considering that there was a big problem of Star Fleet officers dropping out to join the Maqui and even giving them military supplies it could be seen as the Maqui purposefully used to destabilize the Cardassian Union. I could see the Romulans having a field day with that.

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios Рік тому +1

      It wouldn't be the issue to put them into starfleet uniforms, it's the holodeck after all. It wasn't an issue on the actual ship either. So them running around in their marquis attire was probably done on purpose to make it obvious that the simulation is a bit different. For an in-universe explanation, yeah, either they kept with the old documentation or the Doc simply didn't tell them that they got proper uniforms. It's such a minor detail that it doesn't matter for the journey at large.

  • @Oonagh72

    • @HappyBeezerStudios

I did like this episode, mostly Dwight Schultz's performance, although it was nice to see Troi in a uniform (it raises her IQ a lot). It did look like the team on this one paid attention, I think the Maquis uniforms is to infer that not all the info from the Doc was passed down so your theory does have merit. Barclay is the type of person who would want to get everything as accurate as possible (perhaps not personalities but definitely the other things).
    A small touch but something I did like was when Barclay's boss realises Barclay's plan did work, he doesn't try to take credit or muscle in. instead he admits he was wrong and helps.
