  • This week's podcast is with Antarctica legend and White Desert founder, Patrick Woodhead. Patrick shares his adventure-filled journey and the challenges of setting up camps in polar regions.
He discusses his early fascination with exploration and how it all began after attending a talk given by Sir Ranulph Fiennes and how he gathered a group of friends to embark on wild adventures. Patrick talks about his first expeditions to Antarctica including breaking world records crossing the continent, and the physical and mental challenges of polar exploration. He also explains the logistics and environmental considerations involved in running a luxury camp in Antarctica.
We hear how White Desert started in 2005 as a 3 tent camp and now has developed into 3 luxury camps with over 130 staff and how one of the camps, Echo, was inspired by the visit of astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Patrick talks about the experience of landing on the Ice runway and the transformative experience of visiting Antarctica. Patrick shares his plans for new adventure trips and gives us insights on the marathon course for the first leg of The Great World Race. It's all here in this week's podcast.
    About The Great World Race:
Over a seven-day period from November 15th-21st 2024, competitors have an opportunity to complete a lifetime goal of running a marathon on each of the 7 continents, starting at the end of the world: Antarctica.
After the round-trip flights to Antarctica for the first marathon, participants are flown by business charter to the other destinations.
Competitors with the fastest average marathon time over the 7 races are declared the winners, with both male and female categories.
There is also a team competition in men’s and women’s categories. Team members are automatically included in the individual competition.
All finishers of The Great World Race will become members of the Global Marathon Club ™. There is an option to run a half marathon for those who prefer the short distance.
