Rudy if you have any box's of DuelMasters you should do a box opening. Not the Chaotic but the original English DuelMasters. It was such a fun game to play and still is popular in Japan.
I remember those old English cards actually held a bit of value. I remember getting £25 for my Scarlet Skyterror. Not a huge amount of money but not bad for a dead game.
@@monkey39128 Hell yeah some of the cards are way up there now. I am a set collector and I have most of the English sets completed or close. It was a lot easier to complete seeing they only had one version of the cards.
One idea i always liked was limited mark in the original dragon ball z score ccg. The cards in the first printing were marked in the bottom corner and any future printings didn't have that.
Rudy I have watched your videos off and on for the past few years. No video has hit the nail on the head more than this one. Pre pandemic my local game store had a thriving competitive magic scene. Post pandemic the store removed competitive play from its schedule and added more commander days. I was furious as the friends i played with started to stop playing. Just recently i was at the store and asked the owner how it has been going since no one i know still plays magic. He said it was doing better than ever. They sell more cards at inflated prices than they ever have and people are buying more boxes. He explained that competitive players will buy all the high end cards but casual players purchased more cards regardless of value.
i love looking at my old cards and see that they still have value i hope people realize that if nice to put money in a game and still have value in the cards
Decipher's Star Wars ccg anyone? Still has players, tournaments and new cards via the "virtual card" system. Fun hame but it's complexity kinda doomed it. Also tue one thing i jever liked is the fact that every single Star Wars deck is a mill deck because that's tue only way to win. You jave to run your opponent out of cards and I hate playing against mill decks even more than control decks.
Hi James, that is a great call as SW CCG was, for a short time, even outselling MtG. My take is the complexity was a big plus that players loved (we ran a lot of tournaments locally, as did many stores around the world) and the many themes and strategies had such great flavour. What really doomed it was the licensing shanaghans that went on and saw lucasfilm hand them over to Wizards who came out with their own, Star wars game. I never played it, heard it wasn't bad, but the momentum was lost and the SW ccg era was effectively over. The game had many win conditions too, so it wasn't all about the mill (which i'd agree would be terrible if it was the only way to win). The decipher era was a truely a golden age, and nicely complemented those early years of MtG.
Yes yea. I was so bummed when Decipher lost the license. I still have all my cards. Full collections of everything up to the last 2 sets. I should have bought more of those 2 sets as boxes are pricey now.
They were embezzled for about a million dollars by the CEO's brother, but yeah...Decipher was amazing: Star Wars, Star Trek, Young Jedi, dot.hack//slash, Mega Man, Lord of the Rings, Austin Powers, Fight Klub, Wars, Jedi Knights...awesome quality across the board. Even Boy Crazy lol.
The most important part of this video is the last 10 minutes talking about the “game piece” cultural shift and the vocal Timmy minority. It’s the gist of his removed video but much more tame.
RUDY : DID YOU EVER BUY/SELL/HOLD ON TO STAR WARS CCG BY DECIPHER (NOT THAT WIZARD'S SHIT) I was an absolute MONSTER Star Wars CCG glutton from 1995-2002. It was very difficult to split my meager McDonald's dough between Star Wars and Magic (Magic suffered). Then all of a sudden, Decipher loses its license to Star Wars and it was all over, just like that. I completely lost my mind I couldn't believe it. My entire existence was over.
Decipher's Star wars at our lgs had 15-30 players EVERY weekend (while mtg was almost dead, 4 players) for like 2-3 years straight. Was extremely fun. In my head every time a new tcg is released i hope in my heart: "if only it could be 50% as fun as decipher's tcg".
Man we had Star Wars EVERY weekend and while I was from an extremely small town, we had a fierce following and everyone we got into the game was deadly with it. No posers. I was one of 3 in my town that started right off in 1995, but things kicked off hard-core in about 1997 with Dagobah and once Decipher really understood the power level needed to be updated with Special Edition and then eventually the Enhanced Premiere Packs, new fans were gathered. Magic became 2ndary up until Star Wars was cancelled.
TCG, CCG, LCG, - I own around 250 different cards from those 3 groups. I have some as booster boxes, some as decks, Some as just packs/Starter decks, And some were so rare and Dead/ Hard to find that im lucky enough just to get 1 single card from some of these very rare/older games. My mission was to own at least 1 card from each game, and yes , this costed me Hundreds of dollars. but once you go down that rabbit hole there's a whole other world of card games out there. And yes even at 250 different titles there's still more card games on the list that I don't have. some being too expensive and others being impossible to find.
Holy Crap! Even in passing I never would have expected Rudy to mention Star Trek CCG. Man do I miss that game, it was the gateway drug that got me into CCGs back in the 90s.
The thing is, I think its valid to ask what constitutes success. I covered the original Legend of the Five Rings as a content creator, and I was sad to see it go, but it also lasted until after its 20th anniversary. I think its valid to ask how long a TCG is expected to last, after a certain point the weight of its design being so outdated can bring it down. MTG is lucky in that regard because it has managed to shed the weight of its old rules, and the framework is so flexible, but even it shows its age with things like lands whereas modern game design opts out of in-deck resources most of the time and the games flow better.
The reason people dont care about resudual value is because most of us have no way to unload the value. If i take a cyclonic rift i will get half price anyways. It just doesnt matter. In my budget cards get lumped into my 100 dollars of fun money and i consider it a loss.
Transformers card game failed ONLY because they didn't make oversized card sleeves for the oversized cards. Those card sleeves do exist, but they are hard to find. If Hasbro had included a few oversized card sleeves in the starter decks or even sold them separately, they could have made Millions of dollars for a few thousand dollars investment. I don't think Hasbro understands what their players and collectors need.
Transformers tcg failed because it wasn't making as much money as mtg, and it was during Covid when Wotc were cutting production costs on non-mtg products
The card games with the huge IP often failed because of that IP. There is no scope for creativity as the CCG is limited by the universe of that IP and cannot move in a new direction or create new content like MTG. Lorcana will be the same, the IP will limit the creativity and scope of the game and it will run out of approved ideas. That doesnt mean the game cant be fun or have a time in the limelight but it will eventually stagnate and die like the Star Wars CCG, Sar Trek CCG, Harry potter CCG and more.
The Disney IP is infinite, there are still so many franchises they can add. They’ve already shown they can do cool and interesting variations on existing characters, they’ll never run out of material

From the very beginning, every single CCG has been compared to MtG. At the end of the day I think this is why most new CCGs fail. Given the choice, most folks who play both MtG and another game would rather play Magic than something else. The most successful non-MtG CCGs (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.) are the ones which find a way to appeal to a different market segment. Of the new CCGs on the market right now, I would give Lorcana the best chance of survival because of who it is being markets to.
I like this video, makeing games is one of my favorites day dreams and its actually kinnda comforting to know i could try and fail and it not be a huge deal.
Every time I listen to Rudy, especially when he says something like people reach out to him daily/weekly to buy Bushi-road ; Katt Williams plays in my head "NOBODY KNOW, WHY LIARS LIE"
What actually would be considered a failure? We have games that lasted 25-30 years, but for example, if a game like L5R lasted 15-16 years as a TCG and then ended is that a failure? Where does the line called failure start? If a card game only lasts 10 years would that be a failed card game?
I think L5R should be heralded as a success, it was a very special game with one of the most rabidly passionate fanbases in TCG history. A 15 year run is an eternity in TCGs, that game deserves all the respect
The number of Secret Lairs is inconsequential to them being pseudo-RL. He’s a proponent of adding to the reserve list. More reserved cards/art is a good thing. Until Lairs reach 5-7 years old without getting a reprint no one can tell how good to hold they really are.
Not sure if it was just our group from that mid 90's era, but we were in college and had little disposable income to purchase. MTG was the first one to have great game mechanics, nice looking cards and a small but loyal following. That following grew as the game progressed, then came the onslaught of CCG's out of the woodwork. Seems like every CCG mag had 5-6 new cards game cards inserted in them. They were covering the new games, but since they (in our eyes) fell short of MTG we did not spend any money on them. Sure, we tried a bunch and played them, but our dollars were thin so we stuck with what was (in our opinion) the best game. Sure, Pokemon and Yugio were successful, but only in the younger market...and those kids usually graduated to MTG once they got older. Now that market has changed and become worldwide. Many of us from the 90's still play CCG's and have more to spend and I think that Hasbro recognized that and sought to exploit it to milk as much money from the market as they could. They lost sight of WHY the game was popular. They tossed out the formula that made us love it and started cranking out mindless junk. Wondering how many out there have just hung up the MTG hat and have either quit or have done what my group has done and moved to SCR? Seems that there have been enough to move the Hasbro shares to record lows. Thoughts?
Score Entertainment did their absolute best with the game. A steady release schedule, proper promos, solid judge program, no meta decks and tons of variation. Sadly, with a series like DBZ its is hard to keep releasing sets if the series already came to an end 10 years before making the TCG. They just ran out of content and was very noticeable with all the movie related cards and sub/promo sets. But their Capsule Corp Power Packs, their Tuff Enuff promo/event setup, the promos include in Irvin Toys. Oh my god this game was so much part of my life. I still know some guys playing it and really having optimised their decks 20 years later.
That is by far my favorite card game, I'm too big of a DBZ fan and card games for it not to be. I still have all my binders and boxes of cards and even some decks.
My wife does not play CCGs at all. Back in the 2000s I did get her interested in the Battlestar Galactica CCG for a little bit. We played games with my collection. I've almost full sets of what little was produced.
Magi-Nation Duel. You can still find boosters and cards from the starter set. For the other sets, cards, not to mention unopened boosters, are rare. Helps that almost no one else remembers the set.
I remember that, even played it. Then i met players with fully foiled-out decks, turns out they were handing out stacks of foils and fully foiled-out starters and boosters at trade shows. And i am supposed to buy at full price with a very low chance of getting a foil? Nope.
I still have a bunch of cards from Magi Nation, we used to get cool shit ahead of time because my old friends brother was a playtester, cool ass art, barely remember how to play but I'm sure I have rules booklets still lol
I remember seeing a buying like a box of these starters at KB Toys before they closed. They were on clearance for like 25 or 50 cent a starter. Probably still in my storage some where.
I agree totally. some of these games really failed mainly because of the timing, but there truly are more failures than those that actually stood the test of time.
I loved Battletech, I clicked this video just to see if Rudy would mention it. I feel that if someone were to re-release it, but actually playtest it, it could be a contender.
Jihad was one of the few that I bought and actually played other than MTG. Didn’t realize it was a World of Darkness game until Jihad rebranded to Vampire. I bought a clearance box of Jihad at Electronics Boutique for like 3 or 6 dollars for the whole box. I also tried playing Arcadia the Wild Hunt without realizing it was WoD.
Players want cards to be cheap and accessible, while collectors and investors want cards to retain their value. Most of us are somewhere in between. Rudy, however, is a pure collector/investor, and I respect him for his opinions.
“Players” don’t belong in a randomized product ccg, where collectibility is part of the allure. Cheap games pieces are easy to find in LCG’s and board games. You can’t continually sell $140 booster boxes to people if they aren’t able to trade in any of that for some value later. If “players” won’t pay for “expensive” cards, stores have no reason to do box openings or sell singles; you’re not paying someone to sort and sell them and taking up display area to make 10 cents a card. That’s how you kill a ccg. “Players” who want cheap and accessible are toxic to a ccg.
@@rjoukecu Who else had 'stock market' comparison on their BINGO sheet for MTG gAmE pIeCe dipshts today? Hey, nobody asked but I'm going to make a reflexive, poorly considered statement about how MTG should be worthless, because it makes my sore disenfranchised ass feel better about owning nothing.
Not sure L5R can be considered failed. It was the 2nd longest running CCG until AEG sold the IP to FFG at the end of the last decade, who ran it into the ground as an LCG the same way they run everything else into the ground as an LCG. FFG wanted the rights to the setting and the rights to the RPG, and they were willing to halfass an LCG for a year or two to get it.
Rudy, if you personally had to sit down and open every pack of cards you own own from every different card game and set. how long do you think it would take?
Magic, pokemon and yugioh are eternal card games. The question is, which of flesh and blood, one piece and lorcana will make their way out of the opening gates and continue to that rarefied sphere? One piece and lorcana are incredible IPs, flesh and blood is already 5 years in. Flesh and blood has undergone a transformation and grows bigger by the week, unencumbered by a reserve list. It feels like that is where our money should be going and you bought it to our attention. We will see. Back in 5 years!
I used to really enjoy the old lord of the rings TCG back in the day that came out along with/based on the Peter Jackson films. Obviously no way something like that was gonna last long since it was just piggybacking off the success of the movies but I remember it fondly playing with my brother and my dad.
Even tough people don't like the new reserve list, it is already here. Secret lair, as much as they are hated, have a guarantee of no reprint of their art. That is the beginning of something at least (Even if it has no impact on gameplay).
Young Jedi Knights would not have failed if I was 34 years old in 1999. I liked it and would have supported it and used my resources to help organize tournaments. OK lol I'm just one guy there's lots of Star Wars nerds.
Not really a card game but I've made it a collection goal to have a master set of 1998 south park cards. It's hard to accept that such a popular ip has a card set of classic episode art and no one really cares. Wonder if you have any? There hasn't been any other card release for south park to my knowledge but I know they just did the phone destroyer mobile app.

The number of Secret Lairs is inconsequential to them being pseudo-RL. He’s a proponent of adding to the reserve list. More reserved cards/art is a good thing. Until Lairs reach 5-7 years old without getting a reprint no one can tell how good to hold they really are.
Wasn't there a video about grading which have disappeared from the channel?
That new drawing up left on the bookcase is awesome!
Thoughts?
I use to play the Dragon Ball Z game from the early 2000. I loved that game but as always game makers ruin everything.
What really happened was toonami stopped showing dbz. And pokemon took all the business away.
@@mindustrial Such a shame it died right as the series was making a comeback with Super and such.
That is by far my favorite card game, I'm too big of a DBZ fan and card games for it not to be. I still have all my binders and boxes of cards and even some decks.

@@theboringchannel2027 Is that the New York-Washington Swamp Whispering/Loving SEC, or the Alabama Milk Carrying Football God Conference SEC?
I’m a Rudy fan, but I’m sure even he’ll laugh at this one 😂
Have a Happy New Year dude! ❤❤❤
My favorite dead card game was and still is WWF/WWE Raw Deal it was great until they reboot the game in the last 3 sets when they destroy the game !!!
Star Trek CCG was/is my jam! It's a darn shame Decipher died.
One of my favorite CCG was Shadowrun.
They just released an updated version of that game!
I agree totally. some of these games really failed mainly because of the timing, but there truly are more failures than those that actually stood the test of time.
I really liked the score dbz ccg, the anime was huge when it came out unfortunately toonami went under and the fanbase collapsed.
Battle Tech, Spellfire, Illuminati, Star Trek CCG's were also pretty fun but they never got traction in the 90's
Yes, battle tech 😊 totally forgot about it
Spellfire had over a dozen expansion. I STILL play it on occasion. Got me into D&D tabletop.
I loved Battletech, I clicked this video just to see if Rudy would mention it. I feel that if someone were to re-release it, but actually playtest it, it could be a contender.
I still have my battletech cards...limited unlimited and the first expansion mercenaries I believe
Illuminati is still extremely collectible and sought after, what a cool theme
Best video ending ever!
Not only Rudy, but nobody on UA-cam can top that.
got any spellfire for sale rudy?......
What is your favorite card game right now?
Rudy what about hyborian gates
Love Hyborian Gates
One card game that I believe I would buy would be the chaotic TCG
People who play the game for the game. Don’t sell their cards
No. Look at Yugioh.
Happy New Year! 🥳
"and I sleep in the basement" he's onto you guys.
As a former employee and designer for Argent Saga. I could tell you all the behind the scenes why it failed.
Players can proxy the rules text.
If you're buying a retail product, it should retain value. Full stop.
@@chim007azo Exactly. They add nothing. They just want their hobby subsidized for free by others.
@@Syne111 Well, that's funny. I want to just play games, not speculate. I think you can make more money on stock exchange

Who else had 'stock market' comparison on their BINGO sheet for MTG gAmE pIeCe dipshts today?
Hey, nobody asked but I'm going to make a reflexive, poorly considered statement about how MTG should be worthless, because it makes my sore disenfranchised ass feel better about owning nothing.
I’ll never understand why Rudy isn’t a fan of Grand Archive TCG but he loves all these other crap tcgs instead…
The "Iluminati Card Game" is one game that needs major analysis and discussion
It was fun but balance wasn’t there, that’ll kill any serious play
Not sure L5R can be considered failed. It was the 2nd longest running CCG until AEG sold the IP to FFG at the end of the last decade, who ran it into the ground as an LCG the same way they run everything else into the ground as an LCG. FFG wanted the rights to the setting and the rights to the RPG, and they were willing to halfass an LCG for a year or two to get it.
I'm praying BSS makes it into the future. I absolutely love playing it, haha
rudy what's your opinion on the tcg grand archive?
He seems to have ignored it, which is kinda weird but I like it 🙂
Hoping for netrunner talk. Never played but love the cards.
Ffg published as a living card game. Just as awesome as the original
VS System was one of my favorite when it was a ccg
VS System would destroy MTG if it came back today.
How can we buy your 2023 alpha investments shirt?
Rudy did you get any Topps Chrome Disney 100?
Force of Will was a heartbreaker. Truly
Hey Rudy, you're catching messages about that Megacorp game because you're listed as the only distributor in America on their website.
He does read the comments! 🥺
@alphainvestments69 What’s the graded card on top of Innovator’s Dilemma?
I fucking love playing one piece, I hope it dosnt die out.

@@theboringchannel2027 Indeed.
hopefully soon
Someone tried, the company that owns the rights changed management and the new management didn’t want to sell.
FaB going strong, I love the game so much, gorgeous cards and actually balanced gameplay 💪💪💪
They kinda have a reserved list, even if it is just the cold foil versions. If you can get these cheap, you are good.
Where's the Metazoo video, Rudy?
Rudy do you have any boxes of the SCORE entertainment DBZ TCG
Liked and still have battletech cards myself.
I strongly condemn this video 👀
They should look at chaotic and buddy fight
I used to really enjoy the old lord of the rings TCG back in the day that came out along with/based on the Peter Jackson films. Obviously no way something like that was gonna last long since it was just piggybacking off the success of the movies but I remember it fondly playing with my brother and my dad.
Does VS. System get mentioned?!!!
@17:18
FINALLY!!!! Now just need to see Rudy's stash of it so I can admire it.
I wonder if Rudy is sitting on any tsr Spellfire cards
Old L5r was so cool

Much to learn, you still have.
Somewhat connected: Star Trek CCG 2nd Edition.
Even tough people don't like the new reserve list, it is already here. Secret lair, as much as they are hated, have a guarantee of no reprint of their art. That is the beginning of something at least (Even if it has no impact on gameplay).
Greed Monster in the top right! Hell yes! Glad he is still in the background.
You showed us the boxes/cards the last failed card game video. I am a little disappointed
Young Jedi Knights would not have failed if I was 34 years old in 1999. I liked it and would have supported it and used my resources to help organize tournaments.
OK lol I'm just one guy there's lots of Star Wars nerds.
Best rip card game for me was the Marvel/DC VS System back in the day.
Think they folded cus they couldnt afford to pay the original artist royalties
I always wonder what happened to that game
Not really a card game but I've made it a collection goal to have a master set of 1998 south park cards. It's hard to accept that such a popular ip has a card set of classic episode art and no one really cares. Wonder if you have any? There hasn't been any other card release for south park to my knowledge but I know they just did the phone destroyer mobile app.
