    NOOOO! NO!
    That glass is not tempered. That adhesive probably won’t hold forever. If/when that glue lets go from all the heat and vibration, and the weight of the glass hanging when door is open, it will fall out on your heads! When it breaks, regular glass is sharp like razors! Tempered glass breaks into little pieces that don’t cut you. This is not only completely unsafe, it is also totally illegal by building code.

      yes indeed, those thin metal doors flex, and his choice of any kind of glass is worrisome....also coat it first and WEAR GOOD LEATHER GLOVES and eye protection when handling any plate glass product...

    Thanks Pat, I’ve been thumbing the idea around to add windows for added light. I’m so doing this. I was concerned how to finish the outside. I like the caulk to seal it but I think I’ll shop some thin quarter round pvc molding and miter it around the windows gluing it maybe with same caulking. 👍🏼👍🏼

    Hi Pat. Thanks for the great idea! I have two doors, 9' wide so I made four wooden rectangular frames primed and painted for the outside. I used pop rivets to secure the wood picture frames to the outside (from the inside, and the heads will be glued under the glass), drilling into the thick part of the casing 3/8" deep with a collar on a drill bit. 6 pop rivets for each frame, 2 top & bottom and one on each side. The wood frame is 3/8" smaller inside than the hole in the door. This way, when I silicone the glass in place with a 1/2" bead at the wood/steel innerface, silicone came out and sealed the bare steel & bonded to the wood frame as well. Glass has gone up quite a bit since 2020, like everything else. $160 for 4 glass panels; 1/8x16x46 in my situation to cover 8 window openings & 8 $10 smooth door casings for the outside case. Silicone x 2 and paint and primer. All in, $330 in Nov-23 to create 8 windows 13x19 for less than $42 each. Thanks again! It came out beautifully.

    The minute he added the mylar to the windows he mitigated the single pane glass issue. Second, single pane glass was a standard until the 1930's when thermopane glass was introduced, and even then it wasn't used in windows until long after that. On top of that, tempered glass was around before the turn of the century (1874) so if or when the glass breaks, it's not going to fall and create a hazard. Even if it was shot, the mylar would hold it together.
    As for me, I think this is a great low cost idea that solves my own needs for my garage. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Thank you for the idea! I would not go with glass, but have 1/4 inch thick pieces of plexiglass cut (CA has TAP Plastics or order it online). Then I can safely glue AND bolt it onto the garage door. This would also prevent someone from breaking in. I'll also insulate around the outside & inside along the edges to keep water from leaking in, since my garage door gets hit hard by rain.

    • @jiwbink
      @jiwbink Рік тому +1

      I'D RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY FROM THE BOLTS. IF YOU GET INTO BOLTING PLEXIGLASS PANELS
      (EVEN SMALLER BOLTS) YOU RUN A RISK OF CAUSING THE GARAGE DOOR TO BUCKLE,AND OR CRACKING THE PLEXIGLASS. A GOOD SILICONE ADHESIVE SHOULD BE PLENTY STRONG ENOUGH. JUST MY TWO CENTS.

      This is technically illegal in some states. You're supposed to use temperred glass. It costs more but worth it. If you disengage the electric door opener for any reason (Like a power outage) and the door hits the ground hard enough (like if a teenager closes it) cheap glass can break. Otherwise with this one upgrade you at least get a little more peace of mind.

    Great video. Its something I've been contemplating for years. No need to buy a window segment from the garage manufacturer which is a complete rip-off. I have to come-up with another solution since my garage door have no squares, just gawdy horizontal lines. I think a thicker 3/16" (4.76 mm) plexiglass is the best since its light and glues well - it just scratches easily but its safer. Using glass is risky since its heavy and can fall due to a breach in the glue adhesion over time, temperature changes, vibration, and moisture. I would cold weld (JB Weld) metal corner brackets to a metal garage door to secure these windows. Or if wood garage paneling, I would drill mounting holes on the metal corners and use wood screws. Thanks again for the great video !!

    Thank you for showing this to all of us! I wanted to just add what looks like a rounded top carriage house window to my garage door which is wood not metal and make the door look like it is two doors with handles that open them. I thought surely someone would have faux windows that you could just screw on to the doors but I was wrong. What I have found are a lot of magnet faux windows but I am still looking for that screw on fake. If nothing else I guess I could paint the faux windows and add low profile framing around them but I was just hoping to find something quick. Another thing I wondered about on my door is that it is already heavy and I don't want to add a lot of weight to the door and unfortunately there is a massive beam inside that prevents me from changing out my door to a lightweight roll up door as there is not clearance. If anyone finds what I am looking for would you please let me know in a reply.

    Pro tip: many local hardware stores (not the big box stores) will cut glass pane to size. I used to work at one... and the pricing is dirt cheap.

      @@patrickoconnell2380 FYI.... Should be plexiglass or tempered glass.Someone could get injured if and/or when it breaks.

    This is what I want, but I’m afraid that the glass will be shattered when the landscaping people cut the grass or kids playing around. Great job.

      The kids, maybe, but it is very unlikely for landscapers to damage windows. I used to landscape for 4-5 years, only edging all day, beside cars, and between houses, and I only ever broke one window, it was a basement window at ground level. And my buddy who has been doing it for 8 years or more has only broken one car window, it does happen, but it’s very uncommon unless the worker is being careless, but its just as likely they break any other window then, the rocks can fly hundreds of feet if so.

      Great question. I’m in Canada, and have insulated the garage door, but may need to install a 220v 5000 watt electric heater to my panel. It’s gonna be a cold long winter.
