That was very informative, a lot of useful information about different tool types, thank you. Lots of wood turner's think everyone is as experienced as they are. I took note on one of your videos about riding the bevel, that made a massive difference for me. So much easier when you use the tool property.
I have been (sorting of) turning for about 2 years, the finish I got was ok at best, wood removal was slow. I watched lots of turning videos, couldn't see what I was doing wrong. Watched a couple of your videos you kept going on about the bevel, follow the bevel. This became a revelation, suddenly I can get a nice finish. I couldn't believe it. Why doesn't anyone else mention it? It makes a massive difference. Thank you. Also your shine juice is ace. Thanks again.
Hi GlenI had lost your contact details I bought three of your carbide tools a couple of years ago just before or soon after you moved I really enjoyed your video and love your sense of humour! I will have a go at the sanding tool I was just about to buy one! Best wishes Ken
My Simon Hope one, the foam pad ripped within the first week and it doesn't spin as much as the ones I made. I hardly ever use it. Always think it's best to make your own things if you can. It's cheaper too.
Hi Glen I couldn’t find a bit of hard wood so I thought I would give it a go with a bit of 2x2 soft wood not believing it would work I didn’t have a 16mm Forster bit so used a spade bit and believe it or not it was a success! I agree much better to make one’s own I hate the throw away society and am forever repairing and modifying things Thanks again for your superb videos Ken
This is fantastic Glenn, fantastic. Sooo much better having something you’ve made yourself. Really reassuring to have someone like yourself, enabling us all to enjoy turning on a budget. I for one am going to love this project if fact, I wouldn’t mine every single subscriber & visitor makes one of your bowl sanders. Thank you Glenn
Thank you Peter, I really appreciate your comments. I hope this was of some help for people. Not just people on a budget, there’s a lot of turners that might only get to turn once a month or even two months and don’t want to pay loads of money out to do it. Trouble with most of the shops now is they don’t offer a cheaper alternative.
Thank you for talking about the drive centres from RGD Tools. I bought one 4 prong drive centre a little while ago it was nearly half the price of the full set from RGD. Many thanks Geoff
I am just getting into carbide tools, that is how I found your channel. I understand what you were saying about speed, but is there a minimum speed you should stay above for best results with carbide? I should learn to turn faster. I have really enjoyed your 3 tool series. Stop and start the video to catch the action ha ha. Thanks a lot for the information.
Hi Bruce. Thank you. Carbides just work better with speed. Some pieces require you to go a bit slower, but I go as fast as the wood allows, as safe as you feel, having mounted it well.
Make sure you check the shaft size of the sanding pads before ordering the bearings. As I have discovered, not every seller states the shaft size and they are all over the place, from 3mm to 6.5 mm.
So Glenn, You have a great camera person there.well done for marrying her, much cheaper than paying for a professional 😊 and you've got a chef and maid in the same package too 💗.. Thank you both for such a great tutorial etc Well done TEAM
Thank you John. Actually we are not married yet. We are getting married on the 5th of November, so only a few weeks to go. Definitely not letting her get away. We are a perfect team.
I recently did a video on sharpening your carbides ua-cam.com/video/OKIhVNGJOWU/v-deo.html and also on negative rake cutters ua-cam.com/video/B5lW81WHe2s/v-deo.html
Glenn, I watched your video on making the hand sanders. I really enjoyed it very much. What a money saving project. Will you please confirm the magnet and bearing sizes and hole sizes needed. I enjoy your channel? Your videos are very well presented. Thanks. Roger D.
Hey Glenn, GREAT video. I made a sander like that about six months ago. I didn't think about using the rare earth magnet I used a drill stop on the top side. Works good just have to use an Allen wrench. The next ones will be with the magnet. I couldn't see spending all the money for a pad on a stick. Also I noticed your carbide cutters appear to be thicker than the Easy wood or Sorby. Are they or does it just look that way? if they are, is there a reason? Thanks for all the good info you provide. I work in a retail store that sells turning tools I pass your video info on to others for them to watch and learn. Thanks keep up the good work.
Nice sanding tool looks easy to make i have the simon hope one, i like the direct drive centre you have but i cant find the m33 size on the website do you have a link for it
I've got the bits necessary to start making some hand sanders, but am undecided what diameter to make the handles. Obviously it is not critical, but I like the way that you have yours handily stored. You appear to use similar plastic tube sections to store your chisels. I would like to copy your systems, although for vastly fewer chisels, but wonder what size pipe you have found to be best for each - or both.
@@glennteagleofukwoodcraftca5308 Sorry to harp on about this, but as well as the hand sander holders, I would like to know about that long row of chisels on thge wall behind you. Are they supported by smaller diameter tubes, or have you got some cunning method of stopping them falling through hiding inside 50 mm tubes?
@@donjohnson24 luckily most of my chisels won’t fit right through. For the ones that do, turn a small bung to fit in the bottom and drill a hole the size of the chisel shaft.
Excellent tutorial, as usual.
Thank you - you are brilliant ... beginning wood turner here and on a very limited budget ... you are definitely my guy!!
