Sokka's sexism wasn't glorified. It made him look like an idiot. Then he got spanked by Suki in the 4th episode, setting him straight. Its part of his character growth. Don't act like sexists don't exist, especially amongst teenage boys.
The whole point about the original is that sokka started out sexist and arrogant but then as the series progressed his character grew and he grew out of the childish ways into a great leader that’s sokkas entire ark if they start out never making mistakes then there’s no point in trying to have them grow into what they should be because they started out perfect and that’s the downfall of all cinema now a days thank you for coming to my Ted talk
You made some valid points man. It’s sad that the live action series won’t be as good as the original simply because the writers are trying to people please. Hopefully this pleasing strategy of the writers in Hollywood will end some time….
Even if they weren't, i doubt it could truly live up to or surpass the original anyway. I feel like Avatar NEEDS to be animated, but that's just my opinion.
@@ZolPsyko no I think you’re right man. I’m just gonna bail the live action series and rewatch the original😂 I haven’t got into the avatar comics yet, I might check those out
There's also the fact about how they're gonna meet Aang? The entire reason that iceberg was revealed was because Sokka's s-xist beliefs ticked off Katara who lost control of her bending and broke a giant glacier
Avatar demonstrated serious real world issues in a kids show. Hard issues that kids should know about but are almost never discussed, like poverty, war, genocide, fascism, re-writing history, and the effects it has on people. Sexism is a real world issue too. You know who wasn't sexist? Ozai. Ozai was ready to kill his only son to become fire-lord. He favored Azula for her ruthlessness (not her sex) and made her his heir as Firelord. Power-hungry, mass murdering, genocidal maniac can't add sexism to his list of why he's a terrible person. Just because someone isn't sexist doesn't automatically make them good. And just because someone is sexist it doesn't automatically make them bad (though it can), in Sokka's case, and the case of many people, it means they need to learn. Fortunately, Sokka was also not a person that let his ego get in his way. He was humble, which is what allowed him to grow and improve on becoming a better warrior and tactician. Ozai was all ego.
This is why I think theyre going to pull a feminist agenda rewrite of avatar. I had suspicions after hearing the reworks for Azula and how theyre going to spend a lot of time on her when she's barely supposed to be in the first half. I'm already disappointed. Throughout years of popularity, no one once thought Sokka was sexist until now. It's all an excuse to change male leads and their stories to accommodate female characters taking over. Sokka was beloved for his humor and ability to alleviate the heaviness of their reality. It's a damn shame they're pulling their hollywood bs once again on a perfectly fine story.
Wasn't the whole point of their trip to Kyoshi Island and meeting Suki in season 1 to show Sokka's character growth from being sexist to outgrowing it? He WAS sexist but he changed for the better.
@bkilpatrick5828 I think you're forgetting someone crucial. They're CHILDREN who only ever experienced trauma and abuse from the fire nation, especially after their mother was murdered in front of them. Sokka saw this too and then was forced to be the father figure of Katara while doing his best to hide her bending because she continued practice in public places despite everything. He was a child protecting his sister. If being protective of women in any way is sexist, then idk what you want. Name 1 time he was sexist. It's like yall forgot how shitty the female characters treated him too. His whole character arc is about not being useless because he isn't a bender. This whole movement needs to stop pulling that woke feelings bs on older content. If you have a problem with it don't watch it. Don't redo it. As a matter of fact, make your own content and stop mooching off of classics.
@@bkilpatrick5828 He was never sexist. He was a child that witnessed his mother get murdered for pretending to be a bender in order to protect his sister. Then he was thrust into a father figure position on top of that to continue to protect Katara while she recklessly continued to water bend in the open. The amount of mental trauma and burden Sokka was forced to bear, especially at that age, has extreme consequences on a person's psyche. This came out in how childish Sokka is, and his overprotective nature was a way to not only save his sister but other women in his life. It was a way for him to also save himself from experiencing the same sort of loss again, which he does goes through several time afterward. Sokka is never helped through his issues until later in the series when he meets his swords master, and even that isn't the sort of relationship that you can say was beneficial to him emotionally. I think it's hypocritical of people to call him sexist when he stands up for his sister and helps her despite his own fears of losing her, and celebrates her victories with her. It's like yall didn't watch the show, or you just don't remember how the water benders were massacred and turned in by their own people. The women in Sokka's life also made poor decisions consistently, which in turn put their lives and the groups into danger. There is so much more to Sokka's character than baseless judgments out of context.
100% I don't like how they completely removed such a great character arc/development plot, an opportunity for s character to have redemption in some form. They're too afraid of a little realness even if it has a positive resolution at some point. Smh.
LOL The firelord killed people. Using their logic for changing Sokka, they shouldn't create the live series in the first place coz they have to change the Firelord, too. HAHAHAHA I don't get these people. A character being sexist (or anything that's "bad") doesn't reflect the show/movie itself being bad, too. Why change it? :3 Now, I'm not so excited anymore as much when I watched the trailer.
sokka's sexism was not an integral part of his story and he was not constantly being challenged by it, he was sexist until episode 4 and never again after. Personally it seems like kind of weak writing how easily he changed his entire view on all women because he lost one fight.
Nah, it was still there, but he wasn't blatantly making sexist comments. I see where you're coming from. but Its more nuanced than you may think. Sokkas whole character arc was about becoming a man, which held some elements of sexism.
@@ZolPsyko to me it sokka's ark was about accepting that there are people better than him, and that its ok he's not the best. The sexism was only a very small part of that.
@@ZolPsyko I don't think I explained it well. What I meant was I find they don't ever want to depict women being mistreated, ever. Even through sexism, unless it's by an antagonist.
