    In this indie game devlog I used Blender to make a grappling hook model, I worked on some UI improvements, and I fixed a few bugs that have been around for way too long. The UI overhaul wasn't as interesting as I thought it might be since I ended up mostly reorganizing stuff on the backend, so I did my best to cram in some decent progress towards the end of the video. I spent quite a bit of time doing some freelance work recently, so that's another reason this devlog was a bit more mellow :P
    The first bug I fixed made the player float into the air anytime he was interacting with something because gravity wasn't being applied, and the second one prevented the camera from positioning itself correctly when aiming cannons. Both of these issues have been around for a few months because I ignored them, and it felt really good to get them off my list off things to do.

    God damn it Tom, I want to know your optimization techniques!
    3:05 Doing stuff like this is the #1 killer of games early on. Creating complicated settings and UI, as well as unecessary polish and graphical improvements, hurt the game in the long run by distracting you from the minimum viable product and creating bulk that will get in your way in the future. I'm really glad that you avoided the temptation, I can't say the same for myself! Most of my games end after the menu.
    However... talking about MVP makes me think about the progress you've made on the game so far. When do you think you'll have an actual game loop? Or actual fighting between players at the very least? Adding grappling hooks and palm trees is cool but if I were working on this game I would start focusing on finishing the main loop.
    Take all of my advice with a grain of salt. I am not the developer here, you are. You make the decisions, and you decide how you make your game. I'm just thinking out loud as a fellow game developer.

    • @tomweiland
      @tomweiland  3 роки тому +1

      My preciousss optimization techniques 😂
      I'm honestly not even sure they're _that_ good...
      I want to get melee combat done (or at least the basics done, since it might take longer) in the next devlog, and then after that I need to really sort out the core gameplay loop. I'm well aware of the fact that I've sort of been working on stuff willy nilly without too much direction, and that definitely has to change :P
      I do really appreciate the input, thanks :)

    I don't know if you're still on that, but if you want to have your water waves get smaller as they approach an island, you can make a big grayscale texture, sample that in your water height calculation code using world coordinate divided by map size, and use the color/alpha as a height multiplier
    If your map is still procedurally generated, maybe you could procedurally generate that texture too at the game's start, using your terrain system's heightmap or something
    I did that in my own project, I exported my terrain's heightmap, drew big white fading circles over each island, and it works pretty well

    Nice Devlog, I always like devlogs, they are so fun to watch for some reason. btw, it's not just better to put a blur overlay instead of calculating the blur realtime? like a whiteish blur, it would do the same and wouldn't make a fps loss

    • @tomweiland
      @tomweiland  3 роки тому

      Well considering that the game still runs at 380 fps, those 10 frames aren't a huge deal, and nobody need more than 60fps when interacting with menus, which is the only place it'll be active, so I don't think it's going to be a problem. Also, if the thing you're blurring is dynamic the way my menu scene is, the only option is to blur it in real time as far as I'm aware.

  • @theghastlygamer2484
    @theghastlygamer2484 3 роки тому

    Damn, its starting to look more and more polished by the devlog. (Feed the algorithm ey?)
    Just a question, do you plan on keeping the GUI's simple? (Like little to no art, just shapes for the GUI's) Cause if not, Pixel art can usually be easy to start off with. (But it has a pretty bad learning curve). You could just do a more clean style as well. If you do infact have art for the GUI's, I'd recommend not trying to add too many details, as that may look odd against the design of the game (low poly). On another note, the hook looks pretty cool (Although maybe it could do with being a lighter color?). Also heres some inspiration for your game:
    Theres this one small game on a website named "Tradelands". Where the player starts off with a small dingy and some money, they can spend the money to buy cargo and go sell it to other islands for profit. They can purchase basic tools to chop trees, mine rocks, and even fish to get materials. They can sell the materials to other players for profit, or use them to craft better tools which can then get better materials. They can also level up their skills to get better (such as getting 2 material from chopping a tree instead of 1) or selling resources for slightly more. They can also spend these materials to make boats, (Which depending on the choice of materials, will be different colors).
    Cant wait to see what you do next! And good luck.

    • @tomweiland
      @tomweiland  3 роки тому

      For now I definitely plan to keep the UI clean and minimalist, as I don't want to spend too much time on UI, and a minimalist UI usually goes well with low poly games.
      The hook is pretty dark right now-I was going for an iron sort of look, but maybe I'll lighten it up a bit.
      I'd like trade to be an integral part of the game, and I think that would work quite well with a player driven economy. However, I also don't want it to turn into a grindy collect-every-resource-you-can-find type game, so it'll need to be balanced properly.

    I know it's not the same, but wouldn't using a noise textured panel with a low opacity (alpha channel waaaaay down) cause a similar effect on blurring the background? That way you would save those 10fps that you were dropping (even if it doesn't seem like much, it could be a big difference... 120 to 110 fps isn't as noticable as 30 to 20fps)

    • @tomweiland
      @tomweiland  3 роки тому

      Considering the game still runs at around 380fps, those 10 aren't a huge deal, especially since the blur will only be active when interacting with menus and you don't need a crazy amount of frames for that.
      If you've got a noise texture with the opacity way down it would barely be visible, so I'm not sure how that would really do anything. Plus, just overlaying some noise doesn't really create a blur effect, but I appreciate the suggestion :)

      @tomweiland  3 роки тому

      There's definitely a lot less resources out there compare to other topics, but I wouldn't say that's the reason multiplayer games are mostly out of reach for solo devs and small studios. I think it's more-so the fact that multiplayer games take longer to make, and most people/studios need an income :P

    So if your game is a multiplayer game, I want to see how it works with multiply players connected to you localhost at least:)
    And the most problem of doing multiplayer games is no useful information about it. You playlist with adding multiplayer is good, butit is not "super-right way". So you should use more solutions like message-pack, protobuf, more client-sode prediction info, more clarity of you network solution.
    I do my own solution too and have some useful tricks that ease coding game.
    Soo... I think we need more and more info about networking, more effective ways to do that. All of UA-cam videos about multiplayer are disgusting. Your try is good, but need to be continued.
    Thank you!

    • @tomweiland
      @tomweiland  3 роки тому

      To be completely honest, I'm not sure what you're asking for. This isn't by any means meant to be a tutorial series, and very few people enjoy listening to me talk about complicated multiplayer stuff like client prediction/reconciliation, server rollback, etc...
      I took my prediction code out a while back because I want to nail down some proper gameplay without that in the way, and when I reintroduce it I don't know how much I'll talk about it-it's boring to listen to.
      When you say my "try is good", what do you think I'm trying to do but falling short of? And what do you mean it's not the "super-right way"?

    • @samserious5483

      @@tomweiland oh, no no, I must say you start (not try) is good. I meant that. Good start to go further. Super right way is like a "it can be more clearly and easy to understand'.

      Anyway thank you for your work.
