    Just starting to strip an older 602cc M4 engine from a Spanish ak400. I don’t have much mechanicing experience but thanks to your detailed video, I’m going to give it a go. I’ll also have a go at a leaking push rod tube replacement on my 2cv special engine. Brilliant work, thanks Mark.

      Hi Conor, I think you will enjoy stripping down your engine, it is very rewarding and enjoyable. Please let me know how you get on. Keep safe and thanks for watching!

      I had the engine running before I stripped it Mark and the push rod seals on one side had oil pouring from it. I’ve now stripped the heads and the side that had the issue has thrown up several issues. The push rod itself on one side was the wrong way round compared to the other 3. The end of the tubes are damaged and the seals are squashed and damaged which explains the leak. I’ve watched the push rod tube replacement video and hopefully if I’m careful, I’ll get them removed and replaced. I just hope my M4 engine tubes are the same size as the later 602 m28 engine tubes which I can get from Ecas. There doesn’t appear to be any leaks on the main block and no play in the crank, so I don’t think I’ll split it. I assume I can hook out the old crank seals and replace with new. Thanks for providing the videos for numpties like me, I can’t recommend these videos enough. Thanks again, Conor.

      Hi Connor, I don't know a lot about M4 engines and any potential differences in Spanish versions. From memory ( and I am old so that is fading fast) I think the general layout is similar, although yours will be flat manifold with jelly mould rocker covers? The parts though are a different matter, I think the tubes are smaller diameter, not sure about length or if anyone even sells them. If you have a parts book the dimensions should be in that. The seals are different too and I believe there were even 3 different pushrods fitted during the M4 production run. If your alternator / dynamo is mounted on the manifold, which it should be I think, the crank seal change should be the same although the parts are again different. Having said that I may be completely wrong about all of it. Sorry I cannot be more helpful but they are uncommon engines I am afraid.

      Nothing wrong with your memory Mark. Exactly as you said, jelly mould rocker covers and a flat manifold. Layout and operation are similar. Crank seal is different(got 1 from Ecas) jury is out on the push rod tubes as I have to wait on Ecas opening again but an M4 expert thinks they are the same.
      I’ll keep you posted.

    You could use a screwdriver on the flywheel to seize it while you unscrew the clutch bolts and also the flywheel. That was what i made on my 2cv engine. I don't have power tools...lol

    So I watched all 8 vids plus the pushrod tube one: Best 2CV engine videos on the net! Very detailed, superbly filmed and narrated. Too bad that I only discovered this 8 parts series after I did my engine. I re-used the conrod clips (the OEM ones without the ''ears''). How much am I in trouble now?

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  3 роки тому

      Thanks Jean Pierre, you are very kind. It is not good to reuse the clips and I have seen engines where they have come out ( not 2cvs, in motorcycles) and scored the cylinder. Having said that I also know of engines where they have been reused and everything was fine. Lets hope you are lucky ! Thanks again for watching.

    I never see a rubber cover, that is normal for this engine? i see a lot of 2cv on Argentina but all are metal not rubber, great video, i rebuild myself my first Citroen 3cv engine (Argentine name of 2cv6), was very nice learning a lot.. the poor engine was very neglected and still runs.. bloken parts, gaskets, wear camshaft,the reniflard contained 45 years of solidified oil inside it looked like burnt black sugar, missing piston circlip only has half, piston bushing only a part, the other is inside engine lower filter (great this collect bronze splinters).
    The engine is very resistant, I have endured many years of abuse, I will place it soon I hope it will be like new.

      @oldnutsgarage  3 роки тому +1

      Hello, it is great to hear from a 2cv fan in Argentina! The rubber engine covers were introduced in Europe to help reduce noise as regulations were getting tighter. Good luck with the rebuild it sounds like your engine has had a long and hard life. Thank you for watching and keep safe !

    An ideal candidate for a 650cc conversion?

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  4 роки тому +3

      Yes it would indeed but I have a good set of low mileage 602 barrels/pistons from another engine which I will use on this one. I do have an AKS400 engine that will be stripped and rebuilt so may go 650 on that one as the extra grunt would be useful. Thanks for watching, tell your friends / subscribe etc as all the other channels say!

    • @delukxy
      @delukxy 4 роки тому

      @@oldnutsgarage Doesn't the early 425 engine have different crank cases that won't take the 650 barrels, or even the 602 ones? I'm not a 2CV owner but did have a Dyane many years ago. Hubnut is keeping my interest in tune but I will view anything 2CV that comes along. Good luck with this one.
      The rubber cases are a new thing to me. What year did they come along? I can see them helping a bit with transmitted noise just as the jelly mould rocker covers do, or should!

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  4 роки тому +1

      The AKS400 was 602 so the upgrade is straightforward. The early engines are very different as you say. Cannot remember the year of the change to rubber shrouds but I think it was when they went to twin choke carbs and disc brakes. I will check later and post what I find. The later cars had bits of sound deadening pad stuck in various metal bits too, to meet ever tighter noise regulations, those bits will appear in a later video probably.

    • @jean-pierrehilbert2273
      @jean-pierrehilbert2273 3 роки тому

      @@oldnutsgarage the rubber shrouds on my engine were so much deteriorated that I had to replace them with the metal ones. I could not find new rubber ones anywhere on the net :/

    • @oldnutsgarage
      @oldnutsgarage  3 роки тому

      They seem to have disappeared for the moment. I remember when metal shrouds were hard to find ( in the UK ) but reproductions are easily available now, although at wildly varying prices. Hopefully the rubber ones are being remade and will be back soon.
