Those bulk bee splits are on freshly treated equipment to help avoid infestation pressures on the nest. The colonies are doing well so it seems. Two of the bulk bee splits were shown at the end of this video compilation
I personaly do not use the product (i am more into building bees then into honey production, so I rarely end the season with spare combs) but I know a lot of beekeepers in my area use it routinely with very good results.
It’s not cheap , but it absolutely snuffed out that lingering wax moth presence in the shed. It was weird. It also seems to not fazed the bees al all on the comb
Don't mean to be a doubting Thomas but have you seen multiple successful generations of bees hatching and successful hives following treatment with Certan, very interesting, also were your frames a mix of wax foundation and plastic foundation and if so was there any difference in effect on the wax moth?
What I admire most is that the bees love the protein patty you use. I know that you have your own recipe for. Can you share your recipe please including that secret ingredient? Only if you want. Highly appreciated all the hard work you do and the teaching that comes from your videos. Thank you Ian.
Not just any bacillus thurungiensis. It must be a subspecies such as kurstaki or azawaii. These are host specific bacteria that only kill caterpillars. Other forms of bacillus thurengiensis subspecies will kill beetles, honeybees, mosquitos, etc. Extremely important to use the correct subspecies of B.T.
How much wheat do you guys grow? Way back in maybe 1965(?) or so my dad ( we lived in Massachusetts) thought it would be fun to drive to The Pas and take the train to Churchill. Of course my mother considered divorce... Along the way we sampled fishing spots and my sister and I fought Pike to our hearts content. Highlight were the wheat trains at Churchill. Ships anchored off shore. And one flying the flag of the USSR. Canada was a big exporter to the Soviet bloc I guess. Had a tour of the grain elevators and it was incredible.
I am very interested ; however , could there be any possibility that this biological control method could have any effects on the live bees after being introduced into the hive ?
Konas are great for commercial. Low swarm tendency. I made up 4 frames of brood splits on August 25 with Konas. They are now a box of bees with 4 frames of brood. Check me right or wrong in the spring if you want, but late summer splits, 4 frames of brood in the fall will be 4 frames of bees in the spring, that's a kona carniolian. They have small winter clusters.
How did you apply the certan? With a gatden sprayer? Squirt bottle? How heavy a dose did you put on each frame? (Like a few mists? Dripping off?) Thanks as always!
You can make at home and save some money. I use it for biological treatment against white butterfly on cabbage for years and for waxMT last few years. I buy 1kg powder and there are instructions how to dilute it, it is much more affordable that way, like 20 or 30 grams on 15 liters, so much cheaper, since 1000 grams cost like 100 to 110 USD. Greetings from Hercegovina
I have an odd question to the community, not really related to this video... Do your frames ever get pollen bound? If so, what do you do with them? I have been scraping them off and then just setting the mess out for open foraging, but it feels like I am just making stronger (and more) yellowjackets and wasps!
But if we take away all the constant battles what am I going to complain about? It has to be something and if it is something silly I'll look like I'm complaining just to complain and people will know the truth!
Good to hear the product worked. Let’s watch the bees using the equipment later on.

Did you apply that with a pump sprayer?
Ian i lol at the old man collecting every scrap... no waste with those GOOD old men! My father is the same with our dairy
Perfect audio today. You must have sorted the issue!! 😜🤡
Seriously though , they have done well and look awesome!! 😎🙌💪🏻
Lol! I suspect technical issues with my phone ;)
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog without doubt!! 😉🤡
Thx4share interesting content Ian👍
Ian how do you "treat" the boxes with Certain? A quick video maybe?
Thanks for testing the Certan. It's nice to have a tool to help us combat that destructive pest.

Time will tell. They are on their second round of brood, finishing up for winter
Thanks for the follow up on those “bulk bees” and Kona queens. They are looking great. I’m really impressed at your skill as a beekeeper!
I don’t do anything, I just pick up boxes and put boxes back down
Great tips Ian, ordering some Certan as I watch the rest of the video. Great solution to an ongoing problem I'm having.
Good timing! 😎

"Certan" is B. thuringiensis. It works great on preventing caterpillers on cabbages/cauliflowers/etc too.
Corn silk worms

really pulled it together this year Ian! Nice work all the way around!
Dear master Ian we miss your video much ... my dream is to visit you .. 😢
It’s BTa (bacillus thurigenisis subtype a) also marketed as Xentari
Awesome nests on splits things that make you go hmm this just might work congrats Ian on the battling this year looks to pay off
Is there evidence of increased yIeld in the canola close to your hive yards?
Thank you soooo much for that product info! Just bought some. The wax moths are my absolute nemisis in this bee farming adventure. I HATE them. 💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏

We crop 4000 acres
Great!
I believe Ian was combining canola today.

Can you cycle the treated boxes with heat to encouraging hatching possibilities?
@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog: Can you please tell the recipe for using Certan? Dilute? Spray or dip? How??
What effect does the wormicide have on bee larvae? Concerned about residue.
The colonies inspected in this video were on freshly treated comb. Didn’t seem to phase them at all
So can you use the Certan as a preventative or can you use it as a spray to kill the wax moths on a hive that has been infested with them?
Wonder if it would work on the hive beetles

Good stock for sure
is that certan Ian?? 19 to 1 mix?

Hallo Herr Steppler! Told ya B402 it's good shit and the bees don't mind using the frames again!
How is it used ? Spray it on frames ?
Mixed dose in garden sprayer and simple spray treatment per side of frame
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog thank you wax moth is horrible here in Oregon definitely trying this 💯
Is this available in Canada? I cant seem to find it anywhere but the US.
In Manitoba and Nova Scotia
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlogwhere can I order it from in Manitoba? Thanks in Advance. (I am in Ontario)
Unfortunately only MB and NS applied for access. ON did not
Hello. what tapes is used for treatment
Since it works like a larva code (so to speak) how will the bee larva next year be affected?
The colonies at the back of this video are on treated comb
I like shitty boxes because it gives the bees entrance options lol

Hi friends
OK, what's with the rocket??? Thought I was seeing things/
Rocket fuel supplement added
@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog Ah that makes sense!
Real nice nests
What happened to your reefer?
Refer packed it in .., and being used for other transportation jobs
Good times, how often can you grow rapeseed, here in Norway/Europe typically just every sixt year.
