Robert Basara I go shark surf fishing a lot . And I find the best spot is Long Beach island . The reason is is that up north in the jersey shore it’s all rocky reef and down south is where the sharks breed because it’s just sandy and no rock sturcutes. So best spots are Stone Harbor , Cape May , but mainly LBI.
@@meadbriggs766 LBI is good. So are point south - north of Corson's, Sea Isle City, Cape May. High tide, when the water drops off and you can sit that bait in the hole in front of the sand bar. Now, if you have a drone or yak, get in behind the bar and go for the larger ones!

The rods are pretty cheap, I like cheaper rods due to how messed up theyll inevitably become from casting big knots/big weights. The reel I use is a shimno spheros 14000fb which I got for 140$ about 5 years ago, nowadays the same reel will run you about 200$. Altogether the setup I use for sharks would be about 200-250$
Josh Sedgwick those are budget set ups. Can do a rod and reel spooled with rigs and bait for under $150. Not bad for a season or two but you're gonna have to keep spending that money
Sandbar sharks, or Bull sharks patrolling the longbeach island, we have a summer home were my sister stays year round and the fishing has improved dramatically since it's gotten cleaner, to think I used to swim and surf the LBI not knowing there was an abundance of sharks species.

Planning on going out to LBI this summer to fish like this, what are the restrictions for when you can do this on a public beach? Since it will be summer and a lot of people will be out, is it limited to a certain time in the morning and then a certain time around night? Obviously I'm not going to try this in the middle of the day but I also hard time believing that the beaches clear out beach goers until after dark.
Brandon Janz i crush barbs on some hooks. Circles "usually" hook sharks so well in the jaw that a barb isn't needed. Like someone else said, keep a bend on the rod and you'll be fine.

Chris Stackhouse You can wrap electrical tape around the shank of the hook and up the wire, which in theory would make the shark comfortable as it eats your bait, as opposed to straight wire getting fouled in the teeth/spooking the shark. We used bunker on these days, nothing too fresh either, 2 day old bait and even frozen bait. If you had to chose would it be frozen bunker or fresh bluefish, because I have all the right gear to catch the blues, and I heard fresh is always better. So a little advice?
I know a thing or two about shark fishing, from a boat that is. Usually from boat we have a three line spread on floats at different depths different distances from boat. The further, the deeper. And you drift with a chum pot with bunker chum. However, the bait of choice usually is bluefish filet. I think fresh bluefish would definitely work from shore, but use half a filet or so.
Surfishin5 Thanks, its still early in the year so sharkin is tough right now, but literally all the beaches in NJ will produce, its more about reading the beach at low tide and picking a spot that puts you into good depth at a higher tide. this was from sea isle. Conditions are important... calm, warm water is needed for the sharks to run the beaches, strong wind/storms/coastal upwelling will push them out off the beach. right conditions and you'll catch these everywhere. Dont be afraid to try the backbays too, plenty of sharks come thru the inlets and into the back
+Connor Oot good bait yes, top and bottom rigs with small hooks, bloodworm is the best bait but clam, fishbites (artificial bloodworms), tiny pieces of fresh cutbait and squid all work well. They are fun on light tackle, all those fish fight really hard for their size

We cast most of the time, if you cant hit 8'-10' of water on your cast Id highly suggest paddling a bait out. Paddle it out into 15' of water and you'll be getting sandtigers upwards of 10' from any beach in NJ, watch that water temp tho
That seems better cause I have been trying off island beach but the pre made leaders are just way to long to use and attempt to cast with just got to make one my self I guess instead of the premade stuff are you using any weights or floats to keep it right off bottom so it's not crab food lol ???
+conor27 Generally cut it into chunks, might get about 3 chunks per Bunker. If the Bunker is old I will throw it out whole but casting distance becomes an issue. We use large circle hooks and just hook the chunk through the back, leaving as much of the hook exposed as possible
Cole Baldwin Possibly, yes, you might find a stray at some point in the summer when the water is warmest. The Sandtigers can tolerate slightly colder water than the sandbars, typically you want around 70 degree water for both species but they can be found in waters as cool as 61-65 degrees, so if your water temps get up into the 60's or better yet 70's then you'd have a good shot at either a sandbar or sandtiger shark. Cape cod and other parts of massachusetts get decent numbers of both species when water temps allow, but generally they dont go any further north than the cape.

My favorite times to fish are early and late in the run when the crowds arent bad, it can get crowded during peak times. Staying for the night or multiple nights would be expensive, you'd have to rent a house here at the shore, or stay at a local hotel (Im not familiar with the hotels, google it up, they'll likely be 200$/night). You could get creative and look into staying at a hotel in Atlantic City, a lot of the casinos have discounted suites/deals, however I'm unfamiliar with any of those.
RH421939 bluefish is good bait, where are you fishing? The sharks are thick this year they should be all up and down the jersey coast right now, youre probably fishing too shallow, Id check some other beaches that might have deeper water
Impressive, especially since you didn't have to kayak the bait out. I've tried many times to try to catch them in the NJ surf, but I've never caught anything large. I got lucky once, and hooked a large shark, but I was using a striper rig so its teeth broke the leader. How were you able to prevent smaller fish from taking the bunker? Is it just luck?
Interesting video. I just got into shark fishing, from the boat though. I hooked into something that I couldn't lift up to the surface, not even slowly on a 23-25 lb drag setting. I was fishing inbetween shrewsbury rocks and monmouth beach in about 65 feed of water, right on the bottom. After 2 minutes we had 2 big bites. I hooked into it with a spinning reel Okuma Avenger Bait Feeder 65. The fish spooled a full spool of 30 lb test braid off that reel in minutes. Lucky I had enough time to tie it onto my Penn international 50. We fought it at around 10 lb drag for a couple hours then bumped it up to max strike and eventually pulled the hook after almost 4 hours into the fight. The line actually held up really good for 30 lb test. Judging by the setup you have, I would guess that 20 pounds of drag resistance in an unusual amount for this type of thing... Have you tested your drag with a pull scale or anything?
That reel is actually a beast with 44lbs of max drag. Ill usually fight sharks at 10-15lbs of drag but sometimes will give them the heat and lock it down, although i dont know how much drag Ive got on them at the time. Its actually easier to fight them from the beach, the same size shark from boat could take up to twice as long to fight. Lifting them straight off the bottom is harder than pulling them in to shore. Id bet you hooked into some big sandtigers, tons of huge sandtigers in that 60' depth range
+Chris McIntee You are right, it seems like from the boat is more difficult in a sense because you have to lift them off the bottom. This one I couldn't gain any line on it except when we put the boat in reverse. The 50 VSW has 40 something pounds of drag but I was using only 30 lb line on a different rig that wasn't prepared for sharks. Eventually the hook pulled though.
Im avoiding answering the exact "where" question haha, hope you understand. They swim the beaches though, all the beaches in new jersey actually, finding the right conditions will do you better than exact location if you were looking to get in on the action.

Theres sharks in the ocean :/ rest assured these sharks are completely afraid of humans and will typically avoid shallower swimming beaches, the areas we fish for them are deeper beaches with strong current, where there is actually no swimming allowed due to the dangerous currents

Spent many summers of my youth in the sixties and seventies at Sea Isle. I miss the south Jersey shore. Great memories on 71st Street.

We tie our own, its pretty simple, Just haywire twist to a hook/swivel. Typically use 12"-18" leader

We'll use 5 or 6oz pyramids, no floats, if the crabs are around it can get frustrating, just bring lots of bait!

You can tell that beach is steep and has depth, you can tell that by the wave behavior. Hardly any Wawes they only break on shore.

Fresh bunker from a shop called "the girls place" on 47, also had some frozen bunker, both produced sharks for us. Hope this helps!

Impressive, especially since you didn't have to kayak the bait out. I've tried many times to try to catch them in the NJ surf, but I've never caught anything large. I got lucky once, and hooked a large shark, but I was using a striper rig so its teeth broke the leader. How were you able to prevent smaller fish from taking the bunker? Is it just luck?

Interesting video. I just got into shark fishing, from the boat though. I hooked into something that I couldn't lift up to the surface, not even slowly on a 23-25 lb drag setting.
I was fishing inbetween shrewsbury rocks and monmouth beach in about 65 feed of water, right on the bottom. After 2 minutes we had 2 big bites.
I hooked into it with a spinning reel Okuma Avenger Bait Feeder 65. The fish spooled a full spool of 30 lb test braid off that reel in minutes. Lucky I had enough time to tie it onto my Penn international 50. We fought it at around 10 lb drag for a couple hours then bumped it up to max strike and eventually pulled the hook after almost 4 hours into the fight. The line actually held up really good for 30 lb test.
Judging by the setup you have, I would guess that 20 pounds of drag resistance in an unusual amount for this type of thing... Have you tested your drag with a pull scale or anything?
That reel is actually a beast with 44lbs of max drag. Ill usually fight sharks at 10-15lbs of drag but sometimes will give them the heat and lock it down, although i dont know how much drag Ive got on them at the time. Its actually easier to fight them from the beach, the same size shark from boat could take up to twice as long to fight. Lifting them straight off the bottom is harder than pulling them in to shore. Id bet you hooked into some big sandtigers, tons of huge sandtigers in that 60' depth range
+Chris McIntee You are right, it seems like from the boat is more difficult in a sense because you have to lift them off the bottom. This one I couldn't gain any line on it except when we put the boat in reverse.
The 50 VSW has 40 something pounds of drag but I was using only 30 lb line on a different rig that wasn't prepared for sharks. Eventually the hook pulled though.

Im avoiding answering the exact "where" question haha, hope you understand. They swim the beaches though, all the beaches in new jersey actually, finding the right conditions will do you better than exact location if you were looking to get in on the action.

65lb power pro. You can get away with 40 or 50lb braid, some guys use 100lb+. 65 is perfect

Theres sharks in the ocean :/ rest assured these sharks are completely afraid of humans and will typically avoid shallower swimming beaches, the areas we fish for them are deeper beaches with strong current, where there is actually no swimming allowed due to the dangerous currents
