Ironically, I have developed actual epilepsy over the last year (I didn’t have it at the time I had this experience and made this video). I am on Keppra now though since obviously I don’t do well on Topamax! 😂
Heather Carter Oh wow! Praying for your health, sis! I JUST got prescribed Topomax for several thing's, but I'm scared now....Did it make you tired? And if so, at the beginning, or after 4-6 weeks still tired? Thankyou very much, Be Blessed!!
I only took that one dose of Topamax and had the reaction described in the video. I’ve heard others say it does make them tired. I started taking Keppra last month and the regular release version made me too dizzy so I was switched to the extended release version of Keppra and it’s been better. I believe there is an extended release version of Topamax as well so if you have a lot of side effects, you might ask your doctor about it.
Heather, how did you start having epilepsy? I took topamax for 2 weeks and stopped cold turkey per neurologist’s order due to tiredness and slow reactions. He started me on amitriptyline 10mg. I got really bad heartburn so I stopped it after 2.5 doses. A week after stopping topiramate I developed tingling and cold sensations on my hands and feet then it spread to my entire body. The tingling feeling got better (although still there) but now I have episodes when my face becomes tingling and my back feels a flush of coldness and then my chest tightens. Is that simple partial seizures? I’ve off topamax for 3 weeks now.
I took 600 mg of topamax for fun with my friend and I was watching Tiktok and i had to watch the kids and i was twitching and tweaking and everything was happening at the same thing at the same thing at the same the same that theme theme was these mese tame time the same time

scary video because i relate a lot. thank god for your husband. i also thought i was dying and losing my mind at a certain point on topamax. i went into full on psychosis, but before that happened, i had such trouble remembering my passwords for my email and bank account and stuff like that which i have had for at least a decade, and i like to play piano, and i couldnt remember how to play anything, and i'd forget my keys and forget where i put them way more frequently than my usual forgetfullness, and i also like to make art, and colors were really faded and it took the joy out of painting and coloring and my friends were concerned about how tired i was and how much i'd sleep, and yeah i lost weight, but thats cause everything tasted rancid and soapy and bitter! that is no way to live. after i stopped taking it, it took about a month to leave my system cause i started a new job a couple weeks after stopping it, but i was still super slow and forgetful at my waitressing job, and they were about to fire me, but finally it got out of my system. and then of course, the pandemic happened, and holy shit, life just sucks these days. and my stupid psychiatrist was an idiot for prescribing me with topamax knowing that i had ADD and bulimia (it makes you throw up, and destroys your concentration.) Hi Heather, I sympathize with you as I too was on Topamax as well as Parnate and Isoptin at the same time and besides horrid side effects I also lost a drastic amount of weight and it brought on a psychotic like episode as well as mild seizures which I never had previously nor since taking Topamax. I do have chronic migraines and a positive was that I had no breakthrough pain whilst on Topamax. I know of others that have also been negatively effected by Topamax side effects. I took topimax when I was about 8 or 9 for epilepsy. It caused me to become so malnurished I was getting dizzy spells, fainting spells, and weakness because I wasn't eating. I felt full all the time and refused to eat and my mom and teachers had to force feed me every meal and I'd maybe get a few bites in each meal. My weight fluctuated dramatically because one week out of the month I couldn't stop eating food, if it was available to me I'd have it gone. But because it's an adult diet pill I would lose more weight than I could gain. My real trouble was when I his puberty. I was an early bird started develeping breast by the age of 10 so they wanted to switch me slowly from topimax to lamactal once that began I started sleep walking around the house my eyes are as big as saucers and more glazed than homers donut. During this time my parents where divorcing and I had to talk to a lot of social workers therepists and was super stressed out so I was as well having night terrors. After two weeks of taking the combo I quit the topimax and went right onto lamactal. I still slept walked and had night terrors into my later teen years but eventually grew out of it along with my epilepsy.
I have been on 300 mg of Topamax for about five years now, I also have to take several thousand mgs of Keppra. The side effects of Topamax are a real pain in the butt, but it is way better than having a seizure and it has less side effects than most of the other AED's. Keppra on the other hand....I hate it, but again, better than seizing out at a bus stop and getting run over by traffic.
Yeah if you are taking it for seizures then it's definitely more worth taking on any side effects. It's just one of those meds that seem to work either really really well for people, or really really bad. In my case, they were try to give it to me for migraine management.

(I later learned that I misunderstood, and that I was supposed to continue taking the amitriptyline. It never occurred to me that she would just plop one medication on top of another. I’m wary of being on more than daily rx) It went ok for a week, then I started to have difficulty finding the word I was trying to say, much more than normal, and I have a sutta memorized that I recite daily, and suddenly I was drawing a blank! Serious cognitive issues. It destroyed my appetite and caused low level but constant stomach pain. Then I started feeling a lot of anger, irritation, then the fog of apathy, depression. I’m currently trying to prevent the headaches by increasing the amitriptyline. 🤞
I have been on Topamax for years and I am shocked you were put on such a high dose that quickly. It does have horrible known side effects and should be taken with great caution.
tree troll Yeah, especially since my doctor knew I was notoriously sensitive to medication! I've since switched doctors and my new one is much more diligent in checking on interactions and such.
I'm too scared to take it. My therapist wants me on it to stable my mood swings. But I read that it can cause kidney stones. Everyone but me has had kidney stones in my family. I sure as heck don't want that. I am also super sensitive to medicine and their side effects. I usually get a lot of the mild effects. I don't know what to do because I told her and my primary doctor I dont think I will and they pretty much said well you won't get better then.
I’m doing well! I have epilepsy now, but my seizures are completely controlled with other meds. Looking back, I think my experience described in this video was actually a partial seizure (maybe triggered by the medication, ironically). Brains are weird!
I took topomax for over 20 years. Never had any problems until I got kidney stones. My urologist told me that topomax causes them over a period of time. I got off it cuz never want that kind of pain again
Lucie McAdams I didn’t have any problem. I can’t remember what they changed me to but I’m now taking Aimovig injections once a month plus Botox injections every 10 weeks. Pretty much changed my migraines to about a couple of weeks (8 weeks) before next Botox I start getting them but not as bad. No longer days in bed but take excedrine migraine and it helps
I took topomax for ONE month and my vision is just..destroyed! My 'provider' gave it to me in lieu of sleep meds, that Ive been using successfully for years..{can you say"kick back" anyone?}..When I told her about my issues? She instructed me to try it for one month at DOUBLE the prescription. Told her"No".Now? Im looking for a class action. Not for me to benefit, but so none else will have this happen to them.
I had the same experience but a lot more symptoms and it lasted for a long time like a year or so but I was on topamax for 3 years before it happened. I started having panic attacks when they took me off my colanapins and I went to the er and they gave me Vistaril and I took it and my topamax like they said and within a few hours I started blacking out and couldn't feel my body my pulse was irregular and the hospital said I was fine I couldn't feel my face for 3 months
@@sushmav4282 I stopped taking it. I lost 30 pounds on it but gained 28 back. I lost 48 pounds on my own and have kept those pounds off for 4 years. I just have to do it on my own. Good luck to you and God bless you.
I had the same thing happen to me.I never connected it to Topamax. The E.R told me they thought it was s reaction to the watermelon lemonade i drank but i don't think so.I was also on Lisinipril ,which people have came out against as it has put many people in comas.I am now pregnant and taking Labetamal for high blood pressure. No topamax either as it causes severe birth defects.
I thought I had a mini stroke a few weeks ago half my face was numb it felt like it was melting... I was stressed I told my husband I think I’m taking a stroke rushed me to the doctor I was told I have had an Aura Migraine and I was recently put on Tiporimate hoping it’ll go alright
I have the same exact thing, complex migraine aura. Thought I was having a stroke in one of my classes cause my face was drooping and my left arm was numb and heart hurt real bad. Turned out it was just a migraine.
@@josephgardner8990 :( I know isn't it just horrible? I am alright on the Tiporimate but you gotta keep yourself busy at work or go for a nice walk. Or your moods won't be good. But that's just what I'm going through hope you feel better.
I took this medicine for a month and each time it would make my stomach bubbly. It felt like I had swallowed a pack of pop rock candy. it was an aggravating feeling.
OMG it's crazy the way you described that, because it did the exact same thing to my stomach. I didn't think it was the medication at first, but shortly after I figured it out. You're right though!! It was very aggravating to say the least, but that wasn't nearly as bad as the other side effects that I had. I was sitting on the couch watching TV and all of a sudden it felt all the blood rushed to my head, and my neck felt the way your arm does when your getting your blood pressure checked and the thing doesn't cut off and just keeps getting tighter and tighter. I stood up and walked around thinking that would help, but it didn't!! I even went and looked at myself in the mirror to make sure my lips weren't turning blue, and I looked fine. Needless to say, I made things worse because I went into a full blown panic attack because I didn't know what was happening to me! I thought, OMG, I'm really dying!! Long story short, I went to the doctor and found out that it was the Topamax.
Obviously I stopped taking it, but it took several days for that tightening and heavy feeling to go away. You know how it feels when you're upside for to long? That's exactly what it felt like, plus the feeling of a tight blood pressure cuff wrapped around my neck!! I caution anyone from taking this medication because the side effects are just unreal! For anyone that's lucky enough to not have these horrible SE, more power to you! You're the lucky ones!!!
I've just been prescribed this medication and I was giving this for anxiety due to recovering flashbacks from my past... I haven't taken it yet I wasn't sure if I should take it or not .... I've never heard of this medicine... I'm kinda worried to take it not from watching your video but because I don't want to take it due to the meds that I do take ... TFS
+Shina Nails Everyone reacts differently to medication. I happen to be extremely sensitive to medication. It may work well for you, but if you are concerned, talk to your doctor about maybe starting out at a lower dose, or ask them to double check interactions. My doctor wasn't even aware at the time that there was a known interaction between Topamax and Amitriptyline (aka Elavil). The more common side effects with this medication are feeling lack of emotion (for lack of a better term I guess), memory problems, as well as tingling in hands and feet.
Oh wow! Poor thing! I take amitriptyline and Topiramate and want to cut them down! I’m on 60 mg Topiramate and 25 mg Ami! I’m so worried now! This is scary 😦

i take 75mg of amitriptyline lol .... 400mg of topamax.... so much more.... the pain you mentioned on your left side behind your left eye i get that on my right side/eye + really bad migraines (3-4 days no sleep) and my regular migraines (ones i've gotten since i was a child) yay my life
Caliginous Moira I’m sorry to hear about your migraines! My mom has intractable migraines too and she is in pain constantly from them. I can’t imagine!
i don't believe it's cluster headaches... the reason i usually can't sleep is because of the pain, i can't lie down because it makes the pain worse (i can feel my brain moving in my skull and "connect" when i lie down so i have to sit up, sometimes it gets to the point where it hurts to breathe) when my pain level becomes a 10 it feel like i'm being stabbed in the brain stem with an ice pick then i can't move at all. my blood pressure is always normal, i drink plenty of water/juices because of the topamax...
I am permanently itchy now because I have nerve damage from taking Topmax for 3 and a half years. I thought it was the perfect medication at first because it helped me be anorexic, but trust me, I now have weight gain because the steroids I need to take for my itching.
I started the pill too and was very sleepy and had a headache as well, it scared me so I stopped, glad to no it was not just me, I want to try another pill I was taking it for weightloss
I've been prescribed the topomax for chronic migraines they scare Mr a bit cause they cause my lips to go number but the migraine goes away, yet epilepsy runs in my family so it may be affected me in that aspect in some way???
I just started Topamax because my new seizure med that I only took for two days (tegretol) caused major weight gain. I stopped taking it last week but I'm still gaining weight! I'm going to try this, but the first sign of problems I quit. I don't trust big pharma but I don't know what a homeopathic dr. can do for REAL seizures. I take all the right vitamins. Now I'm thinking I don't trust the vitamin industry either. I don't trust anyone anymore. Has anyone had success with a homeopathic approach to seizures? Panic attacks as well. Thanks
Jen Turner that’s crazy about the weight gain! 😱 I’m on trileptal now and it makes me groggy (but better than the topomax symptoms for me). Everyone reacts differently to meds. I hope you find what works for you! ❤️
thank you for your video. I hope you are much better. your video will help others. I was about to ask for this med. i'll manage on my own. it's not worth the risk.
You should get off of it ASAP. It's a terrible medicine that's had many law suits against it. It's been responsible for brain damage, birth defects, memory loss, proclivity towards addiction, all sorts of crazy stuff
You didn't get a stroke because of topamax. There's nothing in that pill that could have done that to you, I'm pretty sure you must had a stroke. Don't scare people away from this drug, it's done a lot of people like me who have complex migraine auras a lot of good.
Joseph Gardner I said I had “stroke-like symptoms”, not an actual stroke. This was my honest experience, and my doctor clearly made a mistake of crossing my meds that should not have been mixed. I do have epilepsy now and I am on a much better medication. Topamax does help some people, but a lot of people have also had really bad experiences with it. Your experience is different than mine, but it doesn’t make mine any less valid. People respond to medication differently.
I was dealing with a debilitating migraine and I trusted my doctor knew what she was doing when she prescribed it, so no, I didn't catch it in the fine print. Typically your doctor is supposed to check for drug interactions before prescribing a medication. Hindsight is 20/20, of course.
Heather Carter don't worry I would have also trusted Dr. Also I am autistic mid function. I am on200 mg topomax and I am freaking out . Pretty much changed my migraines to about a couple of weeks (8 weeks) before next Botox I start getting them but not as bad. No longer days in bed but take excedrine migraine and it helps
Thanks!
What a bizarre experience.
Not for me to benefit, but so none else will have this happen to them.
meloniesghost everywhere I took it for a week and my vision is all messed up. Everything is tinted red and my eyes are blurry.
Did you get an itchy rash with this Topiramate? I did and had to stop taking it. I took it for three months. Lost 17 pounds but got the rash.
Did u stop suddenly? Did u ve any withdrawal symptoms plz Rply
@@sushmav4282 I stopped taking it. I lost 30 pounds on it but gained 28 back. I lost 48 pounds on my own and have kept those pounds off for 4 years. I just have to do it on my own. Good luck to you and God bless you.
No withdrawal symptoms.
@@allpeacepearson5080 thank you dear...
Was there actually a clap of thunder or was that part of the experience?
mike evans it was actual thunder- it was stormy that night
I had the same thing happen to me.I never connected it to Topamax. The E.R told me they thought it was s reaction to the watermelon lemonade i drank but i don't think so.I was also on Lisinipril ,which people have came out against as it has put many people in comas.I am now pregnant and taking Labetamal for high blood pressure. No topamax either as it causes severe birth defects.
I had high blood pressure during my pregnancies. Stressful stuff! I think they had me on labetalol (something similar).
Best wishes to you ❤️
I thought I had a mini stroke a few weeks ago half my face was numb it felt like it was melting...
+Heather Carter thank you so much for your reply I will surely do that.. Thanks again

Hi
please tell someone to me
are topiramate and topamax the same?
dukht kabul yes that is the generic form of topamax
dukht kabul yes they are.
Yes
Yea I’m on topiramate it’s the same but don’t b like me reading everything on google and UA-cam freaking out 😖
hate to say but it sounds like you had a bad reaction and a anxiety/panic attack
That was no panic attack. I've had major panic attacks. It's not the same at all.
They can actually see a stroke on a brain scan thingy. If a doctor told her it was a stroke then... No it wasn't a panic attack.
Oh wow! Poor thing! I take amitriptyline and Topiramate and want to cut them down! I’m on 60 mg Topiramate and 25 mg Ami! I’m so worried now! This is scary 😦
U should try beta blockers...less side effects
@@ravee963 I’d love to try beta blockers but I’ve got asthma so my doctor won’t prescribe them 🥺
@@naturewitch8687 so sad...you have limited madicine opinion... every i started topiramate since 1 month and I m scary 😰 about kindly stone and hair loss, others issue...sooner will stop 🛑...
i take 75mg of amitriptyline lol ....
Are you getting cluster headaches? Unlike migraines, you can't sleep or sit still with clusters. They are very severe.
i don't believe it's cluster headaches... the reason i usually can't sleep is because of the pain, i can't lie down because it makes the pain worse (i can feel my brain moving in my skull and "connect" when i lie down so i have to sit up, sometimes it gets to the point where it hurts to breathe) when my pain level becomes a 10 it feel like i'm being stabbed in the brain stem with an ice pick then i can't move at all. my blood pressure is always normal, i drink plenty of water/juices because of the topamax...
I am permanently itchy now because I have nerve damage from taking Topmax for 3 and a half years. I thought it was the perfect medication at first because it helped me be anorexic, but trust me, I now have weight gain because the steroids I need to take for my itching.
Roach Around did it really caused you nerve damage?? Was it associated with you not eating well too?
I started the pill too and was very sleepy and had a headache as well, it scared me so I stopped, glad to no it was not just me, I want to try another pill I was taking it for weightloss
I've been prescribed the topomax for chronic migraines they scare Mr a bit cause they cause my lips to go number but the migraine goes away, yet epilepsy runs in my family so it may be affected me in that aspect in some way???
+Carla Parish numb
i had the same memory with topiarmate
✅ Strong suggest do not use topiramate until severe condition....beta blockers medicine good option... calcium channel blockers etc...
I’m on trileptal now and it makes me groggy (but better than the topomax symptoms for me). Everyone reacts differently to meds. I hope you find what works for you! ❤️
@@heatherlynncarter4285 thank you hun❤
smh you relate to me had thus happened to me I thought I was alone
Agree
thank you for your video. I hope you are much better. your video will help others. I was about to ask for this med. i'll manage on my own. it's not worth the risk.
my name's Heather to and I take topamax also
You should get off of it ASAP.
People respond to medication differently.
bad genetics
yeah well if you would have read the insert I tells you not to mix amitriptyline, duh
I keep melting down my stims out of control more than usual . my brain is slow and I can't get words out its like it use to be when I was younger it has to be this medicine . I feel terrible also like a panic all the time. Dr. Will not listen tto me and just made the dose more.
Heather Carter exactly!
Ester De Anda - yeah well if you would have read the insert it tells you not to mix your ugly asstriptyline with being rude to others, DUH!!!
