Hey Annabella thanks so much and congratulations!! So excited for you to join🙌🏼 So normally in the first semester you have a lot of präparieren (preparing the cadavers in anatomy) and lectures and seminars in chemistry, anatomy, dentistry and medical terminology (Latin) throughout the week. From what I remember, you’d have präparieren twice a week (alongside sessions when you can also just go and practice in your free time if you want), chemistry lectures once a week and seminars three times a week, anatomy lectures everyday, terminology lectures once a week and dentistry lectures also once a week. The lectures weren’t mandatory except for dentistry from what I recall but this was when I was in the first semester so just note that your schedule might look different from mine😉 Anyways, congratulations again and enjoy your time before you start!! Hallo! Ich schreibe auf Deutsch, da es für mich eigentlich viel einfacher ist😅? Ich wollte also nur fragen, ob du dein Abitur in Deutschland gemacht hast oder aus dem Ausland direkt nach Heidelberg gezogen bist? Ich bin Bulgare und träume von einem Zahnmedizinstudium in Heidelberg, doch bin mir nicht sicher , wie man sich eigentlich bewirbt und wie schwer es eigentlich ist. Außerdem stört mich die Sprachbarriere, hast du deine Vorlesungen schon von Anfang an gut verstanden? Auch Freundschaften knüpft man bestimmt nicht so leicht 🥲
Heyy ja das ist kein Problemoo😉 also ich habe eigentlich kein Abitur gemacht, sondern das International Baccalaureate (IB Diploma in der Oberstufe) und damit konnte ich mich direkt für einen Studienplatz für Zahnmedizin in Deutschland bewerben. Der Bewerbungsprozess ist für jede Uni ein bisschen unterschiedlich und ob du auch als internationale Bewerber*in innerhalb oder außerhalb der EU mit oder ohne dem Abitur könnten eine Rolle bei der Bewerbungsart spielen. Also da würde ich an deiner Stelle liebe nochmal die Uni kontaktieren und fragen, sodass du konkrete Info und Antworten erhalten könntest😉 ich würde sagen, dass es ziemlich schwer ist, einen Studienplatz für Zahnmedizin in Heidelberg sowohl für Deutsche als auch für internationale Studenten zu bekommen, weil man ja sehr gute Noten haben muss und als eine internationale Bewerberin musste ich damals auch ein Motivationsschreiben und Lebenslauf zuschicken und auch eine externe Prüfung schreiben (die war aber optional) und weil ich einfach auch mehr Erfahrung und Ahnung bezüglich Zahnmedizin vor dem Studium erhalten wollte, habe ich einige Praktika gemacht etc. Wenn ich ganz ehrlich bin, hatte ich schon am Anfang ein paar struggles wegen der Sprache und manchmal konnte ich nicht so viel in den Vorlesungen verstehen, insbesondere in der Vorklinik wann wir sehr viel Theorie gelernt haben🥲 Aber es geht mit der Zeit und langsam kommt man besser mit🤞🏼 Freundschaften sind immer von person abhängig as you know aber wenn du dich wirklich so put yourself out there und versuchst, viele Leute kennenzulernen und ein open mind hast, kannst du bestimmt deine Freunde finden👌🏼 ich verstehe, dass es in einer anderen Sprache tricky und nicht einfach ist, aber dafür gibt es viele Chancen unerwartete und einzigartige Erfahrungen zu sammeln und auch als Person zu wachsen might I add😏
Hey love i recently graduated highschool and i also want to pursue dentistry in Germany, since the uni u are in teaches in german lang, may i ask how long did it take you to learn the language? And are there any other public unis for dentistry in english? Thank you
Heyy congrats on graduating and ahh so nice to hear that you also want to take on dentistry!!🙌🏼 so for me personally, I can’t give you exact numbers in terms of how long it took me to learn the language since I was already living in Germany for a few years prior to starting uni here so I guess acquiring the language just happened gradually during my stay here. The language itself is imo harder grammatically than the other languages I’ve learnt so far and speak like Korean, Spanish etc but this is just my opinion so maybe for you it might come a bit easier😉 with more exposure and practice, I’m sure learning the language will come more naturally and even now, although communicating everyday German is not really a problem for me anymore, I still struggle a tad at uni when the profs explain something and there are a couple of words I don’t know, which then make understanding a bit of a toughie🫠 But if it’s the language that’s stopping you from pursuing dentistry here, don’t let it! It can be for sure a challenge, especially in the beginning, but it’s totally worth it and it gets easier along the way😉 unfortunately there aren’t any public unis for dentistry here in Germany that teach the course in English as far as I’m aware🤔 Hope I could answer some of your questions and all the best of luck with your future pursuits!!💪🏼🍀
Are all the courses taught in German?
Hey @hibizaa yeah all courses are taught in German. So when you’re applying to study dentistry here, you also need to send in your german language proficiency certificate along with your other documents to show them that you can speak and understand the language 😊

Hey sure thing! So I can really only speak for dentistry here but at our uni the first two years as a dental student consists of lectures, seminars, preps in anatomy and lab practicals where you’d have to carry out different experiments for various subjects and write follow-up reports based on your experimental findings. The first two years are basically the ‘preclinical years’ and they’re mainly focused on building a good and detailed foundation on anatomy, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, histology, physiology, biology and dentistry and you also have clinical exposures in the first and second years where you can assist older dental students with their patients. But I’d say the first two years are very theory-based and as dental students study and learn with medical students for the most part, it feels more like you’re studying general sciences/medicine rather than dentistry in fine detail. However, you do have practical dental courses in the second year where you get a taste of what it’s like to do work in dental technology and preventative dental care. There are many written exams in the first two years as well as oral exams and if you’ve passed all exams, course modules etc for the first two years, you can register to take the first dental state exam. After successfully completing the state exam you can then move up to the third year where there’s a lot more practical course modules in different dental specialities in conjunction with lectures and seminars. After the third year, you’d have to sit the second dental state exam and upon passing that, you can start the fourth year where you’re basically in the clinics with your own patients alongside having the usual lectures, seminars and so forth😊 I’d say the standards expected from us students here are quite high and passing tests and course modules can get very strenuous at times, but the teaching staff is always approachable and the community here is great👌🏼 I’m sure you can find out more about our uni and dentistry at our uni’s website so do give it a check if you’re keen for more info! Otherwise, I hope this gave you some insight into dentistry here✨
