Everything WRONG With My CHEAP Porsche Boxster (Car Ninja Inspection)

  • If there's one thing I've learned working on cars, it's that Porsches are extremely well built and reliable (at least the new ones). So I wasn't too worried when I bought the highest mileage 987 Porsche Boxster I could find. A $9,000 manual transmission convertible Porsche seems like a car I'd hate, but after driving it I'm completely in love with it. It has plenty of power, the 5 speed transmission is perfect, and somehow everything still works.

    Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Goldwing, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make UA-cam videos.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?

Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

A little secret for easily changing the gear oil on a Boxster or Cayman without having to remove the reinforcement plate and jeopardize your alignment, drill a 2-3" hole in the plate directly below the drain plug. You can insert your socket extension straight in to it and drain through it as well. On our race cars we change it every 10 hours of track time and this makes it very quick and easy.

I have 177k no my 987. I've owned it for 6 years now and its just been fantastic. Last month I had the FIRST problem with the car, the water pump died. I replaced the pump myself and wow was it an easy job. The water pump was easy to access, the old pump came right off and the new one right one with no problems. I LOVE my Boxster. I literally drive it everyday.

Just remember to disconnect the battery before removing either seat. That's most likely what caused your airbag light. Depending on how far you go with your stereo upgrade, the amp may be under the passenger seat (my 986 Boxster had it in the frunk, my 987.2 Cayman has it under the passenger seat).

They are common on Porsches. Usually its a switch in the seat belt buckle that goes bad that causes the light to come on. I had one on my 996 that I cleared over a year ago that has not come back since.

Honestly the IMS is probably the least of your worries at this mileage. Have the ninja check the DME for overrev history and also check the camshaft deviation to gvie you an idea of how worn the chain guides are. Given the nice condition of the car I'm guessing it had meticulious oil changes so the internal plastics (and IMS bearing seal) should be in good shape. Oh and check the shifter cables too cause they like to fail. Other than that fix the supension, put a good exhaust on it, and drive the hell out of it!

For the airbag light, I had read that when you take out the center console (for changing out the shift cables and shifter in my 987.1) you have to leave the airbag light connected or you will get a code that has to be reset. Could be that it was disconnected at some point. But glad you got that sorted.
Side note, mine had 99k miles when I picked it up in 2021, have added about 5k in 18 mo (minus winter) and I love love love driving this thing. It’s a base model and couldn’t be happier with the sound and feel of it. I have a clunk in my right front, and I had replaced the away arms and bushings, but still there. I hear you have to tighten the bolts with the suspension compressed so that’s my next thing. But nothing else really to mention.

One of the Thunderbird pilots saw my son's photos from Cars & Coffee visits on weekends and tracked him down over a months time. Asked him if he would come to Nellis and photograph the pilots with their jets ... and wait for it ... they all owned a Porsche!! They pulled their cars up next to their jets for the shoot. Photos were out of this world excellent. The also had a new Mustang prototype that they allowed him to take pictures of but he had to promise not to release the photos until they announced the prototype formally. @@WatchJRGo I have a circuit works catback on my 986 S. Super nice especially for the money. I have their mid cat delete pipe too. Wouldn’t hurt to try the CW catback

I put aviation gas in my 911 once, happened to live close to a small airport. Ran clearly better with it. I am not a pilot but there does seem to be a connection.

I put in a new ceramic IMS and clutch in my Boxster. It cost $3,200. Mostly labor.

I thought the IMS issue was on the gen 1, 1997 to 2004. Being a 2006 I think that was revised. Still has a bearing, but no failure prone like the gen 1.

Yes- the 987s especially being 2nd year is likely fine.

To add this, the 97-99 had a double row bearing, much more reliable then the single row 200-2004. 2005 could be either, 2006-08 had very reliable internal non-removable (without splitting the case) bearing

At 16 years old, the IMS was most probably replaced years ago. I would be very surprised if the original IMS is still in place.

Very important on these flat six motors to let oil temp reach 190 before revving over 4,000. Especially high mileage cars!
