I was a very sad child (long story); and certain songs would make me cry, never knew why...but this was one. As an adult, I think it was the melody. Tom T Hall was right up there with Don Williams as a legendary songwriter! And yep, it still makes me cry “God Bless the Children while their still too young to hate”.
HE was called The Story Teller he has passed away now he was from Eastern Kentucky same as Loretta Lynn from Butcher Holler so is Patty Lovelace and Ricky Scaggs and Chris Stapleton
Hey Don, Tom T. Hall can draw pictures with words that evoke emotions as if we were watching an artist at their canvas at work.... Amazing what one God gifted person at their craft can do for ones spirit.... Great job on the reaction once again and.... Thanks for choosing this artist. One of the greatest ever... Keep RN2C BROTHER!!!
Everyone has their favorite musical artists. Most of the time they choose that artist because of the songs they sing. Tom wasn't ever my favorite artist, but I have always loved his music. From a very young age, I've had a huge amount of respect for this man. As a performer, he has always made me feel like I was the person that he was talking to, or singing for. I'm sure a lot of people had similar feelings. If all of country music was a family, he was the all knowing, all seeing, all loving, Grandfather.
I had a friend years ago who said he would get drunk and play this 45 record over and over and over. One night his wife had all she could take and went to the stereo and broke the record into tiny pieces. 😂 I love that song. Thanks for reacting
Simply the best ballad writer in the business... I saw him live in concert here in Australia, back in the 1970's.. it was a truly great show. A Tom T song worth a listen to is "Shoes and dress that Alice wore" - Cheers
@Dallas Nyberg That's wonderful that you got to see him Down Under! Welcome aboard the channel, and with a first name like yours you'll be pretty popular around here. Ha!
@@RockN2Country... Ha Ha.. I used to get called " Texas" at school, when was a kid... later on, when the TV show Dallas tuned up, I got called "JR" quite a bit.
So nice, so much warmth in the song and the voice. Don I'm so glad you enjoyed Tom T Hall. Tom has handfulls.....is it handsfull or handfuls , of these story songs. This is definitely one of the best. I wouldn't care if you did Tom for a week. Faster Horses Ballad of 40 dollars.
What a treasure was Tom T., one of my favorites! Man, this song took me back to my youth. I actually had tears in my eyes as I watched the video. I've actually never had any watermelon wine, but he's spot on about old dogs & little children.
Good review Don. Don't forget to check out the studio version of this song...but this just came to me, John Anderson, (Seminole Wind) as you like a good story in your songs...
One of the greatest ever. Week in a county jail. The day that Clayton Delaney died etc. A lot of people don't realize that Tom T also wrote Harper Valley PTA.
I discovered your reaction/ratings a few months ago and absolutely love the concept. I really enjoy your videos. So glad to see that you have several Tom T. hall songs on here. I believe his song "Pay No Attention To Alice (She's Drunk All The Time") would be an excellent fit for your show. Hoping to see it on here some day. Thanks for all that you do - very entertaining.
Oh man he still has that captivating presence. He is one of the best writers and storyteller singers around. I'm always right around where you are with the ratings and was thinking hope he goes above a 9 on this. I had a 9.4. I'm always within a .3 either way. So good to here these gems and you turn me on 🤔 to new artists as I'm mostly in the past legendary greatness. I hope, like a lot of your requests to turn you onto past greatness that withstands the test of time, like these new artists hopefully can withstand the test of time and become legendary greats as well. There is a little ray of hope with some of these newer talents keeping the tradition alive with old and new originals almost as good. 🙏🙏🙏 🤔 let's see where to take you next. Got so many greats 🤔 Bill Anderson with Roy Accuf - I Wonder If God Likes Country Music Whispering Bill never disappoints and not to influence the rating I have this one at....... 😬🤦♂️🤦♂️ almost let the cat out of the bag 😁😁
I was introduced to the great Tom T Hall through covers by the Drive by Truckers and Patterson Hood's solo albums. I think he's one of the finest lyricists ever. His writing is devastating in its simplicity. He can lay you low with a mundane observation. There is something about the economy of his songs, the way he structures his lyrics that packs a punch. The DBT's "Mama bake a pie" is one of the best covers I've ever heard, one of the best songs ever written about the cost of war. Hood's cover of "Pay no attention to Alice" is similarly powerful. I'd urge you to check these out out (maybe the first for veteran's day?)
Tom T. Hall is among a handful of the very best and most prolific of County songwriters in history. He simply cannot be topped. Every connoisseur of County has their top three Tom T. Hall picks, but I can't possibly get my list of favorites under 10. Here we go: "The Homecoming", "The Year Clayton Delaney Died", "Ballad of Forty Dollars", "Faster Horses", "Fox On The Run", "Song of The South", "That's How I Got To Memphis", "A Week In A County Jail", "Ravishing Ruby", "I Washed My Face In The Morning Dew", "Salute To A Switchblade" -- ah, shoot, that's 10 already and there's still "Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine" and "Country Is" and you see what I mean? Long live Tom T. Hall, his legacy will never fade away.
Great tune great rating...... Tom T is a legion..... you would like his song “Faster Horse’s (The Cowboy and the Poet)”.."ua-cam.com/video/UD8ytadaNI8/v-deo.html he and his wife are still writing songs mostly Bluegrass I understand....... thanks for doing this one
Contrary to Mr. Hall's statement I would have shared a bit of money with the man. But we are different people. No matter how wise etc. he is. I'm damn sure he could use a few bucks. Mr. Hall is sleeping soft in his mansion and had steak for dinner.
Tom T. Hall is a great storyteller and "A Week In A County Jail" is a good example. Two of my favorite Tom T. Hall covers are "That's How I Got To Memphis" by Buddy Miller and "I Miss A Lot Of Trains" by Iris DeMent.
@john corcoran I’m always showing respect to everybody, especially the legends. Why do you think I react to so many artists that very few others react to?

Tom T Hall is one of the greatest singers/songwriters and storytellers there has ever been.
That's why his nickname was the Storyteller 👍
He is probably one of the most underrated singers in country music.

Yes, he had absolutely no fucks to give at that point.
Reminds me of Willy or Waylon in stage presence.

What a magnificent man and performer, even at that age he did it brilliantly, love!.
It's like his rendition of it years later, after the original recording is so much more convincing.
I find it hard to believe that Tom T Hall committed suicide. Shocked me all to hell. Rip Tom T.
From my hometown! That's right, there's at least two cool people from here. Tom T. and me. LOL
On my wife’s phone hey you got to do this song Tex Ritter the face on the bar room floor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course one of his biggest songs that he wrote, was The Harper Valley P.T.A.
I absolutely love Tom T Hall!!! And this song in particular. Ky is a hot bed of talent.
The country music story teller. He has some great ones out there! Listened to him a lot on 8 track tapes in an old van I drove around.
