Time served in an armed force does not transfer tactical level knowledge. You could do 30+ years as a mess specialist, and know everything there is to know about feeding an aircraft carrier full of sailors, and not know the first thing about naval combat. But you can bet that ship isn't anywhere near as combat capable if the food is crap. It takes a team to make a warship work. Every rating is important, and ALL the jobs need doing by somebody.

There was an incident where a friendlies chaff triggered the CIWS into striking them for blue on blue and neutralizing the chaff canisters fired against a legitimate missile threat.

But the sonar bouys are disposable, right? The helicopters have a limited number and the ship has a limited number to replenish the helicopters. They can't just be dumping sonobuoys in the water 24/7.
Seems like the play here is to use the magnetic detector to get an initial fix and then use the buoys to locate the sub accurately enough for a torp drop.
Also could probably use sprint-and-drift tactics with the OHP to increase detection range against the subs with it's towed array instead of steadily chugging along at 20 knots constantly.

Nice to see that the game makes it so hard for surface ships to find subs. When we went into war games we had to stay in a specific box at a specific set of depths so the surface ships knew where to look. Several times the judges had to tell us to go up to periscope depth and rotate and radiate because the surface ships could not find us. It was only by luck, that if we were not under guidance to make it easy for surface ships to find us. And you are right on about having sound recordings of adversary ships. A couple of the subs I was on were diverted from our original courses to take recordings of vessels that we did not have recordings on yet.

That sonar "whistle". The first time I ever heard that was when I went to sea for the first time. I was onboard a Type 23 ASW frigate and we were on exercise hunting one of our own subs, if I recall correctly. I had never heard a real sonar outside of war movies. In those movies the sonar always made a pinging noise. When the frigate I was on activated its active sonar you could it it whistle throughout the ship. I had no idea what the sound was and I remember being laughed at by my shipmates when I asked what that noise was. I soon learnt that modern sonars make that long whistle sound rather than the short pinging. It was a very eerie sound.
I'm definitely getting this game when it comes out. I'd love to see Royal Navy warships come to it.

Hi! So about the acoustic library naval forces have: They record ships and put them in a library. With computer analysis it's even possible to recognize the amount of props and en amount of blades each prop has. Every blade has marks on it, due to cavitation implosions damaging the blade or by other damages. This gives each ship a fingerprint acoustic profile which will be recorded and stored in a library. Again, computer analysis is able to find the right recorded profile with a newly made recording, classifying and identifying an unknown unit. These databases are highly classified, just as EW databases, and only rough data is traded with other friendly nations as no one wants to even show their allies the capabilities of their sensors.
So, experienced hearing but especially computer analysis is able to find specifics from a sound, like amount of props and amount of blades per prop which is important data to classify anything you don't have a recording of but know these specifics of (the reason the prop of a sub is always covered up on land in case someone takes a picture of it) and recordings can identify specific units based on the acoustic fingerprints in the database you have.
This game feels the most as a realistic sim from all the naval games I've seen so far. Can't wait to play it. Been a while since I've been in the CIC, would love to take control of a SAG again.

about the ASW mission, use the sonobuyo on your helos, you didnt used any ! would have saved you and detected a lot sooner, also the helos have the MAD, which comes out at 20ft while moving automatically, set up a track like pattern above any anomaly and you're good. dipping sonar wont be available, as it was post 80's and the game timeline stop right there.

He focused most of the time with the dipping sonar which the Seasprite doesn't have, they only have sonobuoys and MAD, very different from most Asw European helicopters. Sonobuoys and MAD made the helicopter more efficient in ASW since they can hunt while moving.

10:27 the thing is, the FRAM Gearings were rebuilt with emphasis on ASW, evident with gear like the ASROC box launcher amidships, two triple torpedo launchers in front of the superstructure where turret 2 originally was and a hangar which only can accomodate a QH-50 ASW drone

    • @Ushio01

They were but it was ASW for use against diesel electric subs not newer nuclear and albacore style hull subs.

I absolutely loved this video... I came here because I heard this game launched and it is right up my alley. I found this video, and it helped me so much. I found it more helpful than some of the other videos due to its longer length and your more laid back play-as-you-go style. I appreciate that, because I believe this game has no tutorial. So I rewound your other video on submarine gameplay several times watching you nonchalantly launch at torpedo at the enemy.
I also appreciate you anecdotal (yet important as they are valid) stories of your time serving. Brings a great light, understanding, and relatability to the gameplay, shedding a light on the expert game development, as well as the accuracy to historical context, as you have made aware.
I will subscribe, and I hope you can make a series of "soft tutorials" on the game in the future.

Once your Fox's missiles were out you should have put her into an ASMD course, essentially a 60 degree angle from your aft to the incoming missile. You are sailing out of your chaff and limiting its usefulness by sailing in an angle toward the incoming ASM threat. Another point of an ASMD course is to allow your CIWS a proper angle to fire which in the case of the fox looked like it wasn't even able to fire a single shot from the CIWS.

Howdy Jingles! My name is Mack McHale (yes, I know...American 1960's TV show "McHale's Navy"} And yes, I am a Retired US Navy CPO and I caught a ton of shit about that. I one told Rear Admiral Kelso when I was attached to Fleet Combat training Center at Dam Neck, Virginia in the early 80's; "That it was indeed MY navy, please don't scratch the paint." He laughed and put me on his staff for a while. I digress, I was once a "Screaming Seaman" Operations Specialist (radar/ASW type aboard USS Sterett CG 31 and also spent time on her sister USS England CG 30, who was moored to our port side. After watching your introductory presentation of Sea Power and your abysmal waste of USS Fox (funny though it was), I reflect on how we were equipped with the infamous SQL 17 "Helen Keller" sonar. A proud Raytheon/Dogshit International piece of grey painted crap. The only benefit to our Belknap was our LAMPS 2 helo. This little honey not only could drop sonobuoys and the occasional torpedo but most importantly was the MAD boom that trails behind it. I'm sure that you have recorded many "MADMAN" callouts as Ivan tried to be sneaky. So, does the game go into detail; of buoy drops and MAD contacts? I'm 65 and even more crap than you! Please keep up the amusing screw up and stories of your sea time. Fair winds and seas!
