Can u do a tutorial 62 inches long
Would a couple wearing cloaks daily delve into creepy valley?
Excuse me miss, but how do I know how wide to make this? I’m chubby and not sure if this will effect how it will look.
I hate wearing coats and jackets, but I'm totally down to confuse my coworkers and the employees at the local Walmart by rolling in in a hand embroidered cloak.
p o w e r m o v e
As someone who is currently hand embroidering a baby blanket for a friend, let me suggest that you make sure you have enough time on your hands before you start the embroidery process.
Double power move: have multiple cloaks in different styles and colors for when you wanna really shake things up
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣
I work at Walmart and am currently deciding to do the same thing
I've made quite a few capes/cloaks over the years, most of them lined.. I woudn't suggest sewing the lining to the outer fabric on the hem, yes it's faster, but different fabrics stretch at different rates and it's very likely you'll have problems with it after a short bit of use, or especially if you ever need to wash it. Better practice is to sew the front sides together, hem the lining and outer fabric separately, and make the lining a bit shorter so if it stretches it doesn't show. You can tack the two pieces together in a few places around the hem so it doesn't get all turned inside out, but don't do it tightly, use a little piece of woven tape or a thread chain that's 1-2 inches long so there's wiggle room for the stretch. The way described here is fine for a costume, but for every day use or hard repeated reenactment use do it the right way first to save yourself having the rip out that bottom seam later.
Great advise, thanks!
As a beginner, I really appreciate your advise! Makes so much sense!
Emily Lindstrom
I wish I’d seen this comment before I had made that exact mistake and ended up cutting the bottom seams
Thanks for the advice
Hello Emily I know it has been 2 years since you posted this so the chance of a response is slim, but I am a beginner at sewing, and I cant quite understand what you are saying on how to fix the problem. I understand the issue of them being sewn at the hem. I just cant seem to get what you are saying on how to fix it.
As a non-native english speaker that’s used to the metric system, the whole measuring sections of this were... an experience.
yeah...yards 0-0
@@questioningeverything6174 even here in canada where we use metric fabric is measured in yards. seems pretty international
BeezTrollin oh I only knew it was used in America I'm from the Netherlands and we just use meters, cm and mm
Yeah, we were supposed to switch over to the metric system in the 90’s so I remember them drilling it into our heads as a kid. But they never changed over so it must have been too costly to change everything I guess.
It's frustrating, most tutorials are like that.
don't know why im watching this its currently 2:34 in the morning and i have recently discovered cloaks
I know they are amazing and even though I have HORRIBLE anxiety I am thinking about wearing cloaks just around like why aren’t cloaks a normal article of clothing
*Me, a teen who hasn't sewn anything with a machine, or sewn anything at all:* I wanna make that!!
You can do it!
I've never tailored anything before but I wanted to make my husband a cloak for his birthday. I followed your instructions but used only one layer of heather grey fleece and I'm so excited to give it to him! Thank you so much! What would have cost over $120 retail for the finished product only cost me $35 in fabric because I caught a 50% off sale! He's wanted one for years and is going to be thrilled.
Raven486 just curious how he liked it
you can't just leave us hanging raven did he like the cloak
Raven please we must know it's been 2 years
Please raven, did he like it???
@@casswade2000 maybe he didn't like it and they are now divorced.
Or maybe she's busy making a cloak for each week of the year in different colors and fabrics.
I tried doing this with heavy duty trash bags at work, it was raining heavily that day and I had forgotten to bring my jacket. I only needed to walk about 3 blocks, so without basic knowledge and shapes that I needed, it didn't come out as cool as I had hoped but it worked pretty well lol. I may or may not be using this video as a reference on how to make a new one lol
....... just be a man and put the damn trash bag on you're head rather than doing all that mess

Thank you for taking the time to make the video and provide instructions. Very helpful.
You're welcome, glad we could help :)
I just used this tutorial to make a cloak for a Raven cosplay! My first big sewing project - and it turned out fantastic!
Happy to help!
I just finished making this cloak for the renfest this weekend, and I really don't think I will be taking this off ever. This cloak is who I am now.
LOVE THIS! Happy we could help!
Perfectly explained and demonstrated ~Thanks !
I used this to make a childs play cape.
Been trying to find an easy, followable, and understandable cloak pattern for a while. This is it. Totally making it
Great! Let us know how it comes out :)
i'm going for the grim reaper aesthetic in my everyday life
update: i'm currently making a small cloak for my cat (don't ask) so i can try this out without using up much fabric and when i'm finished i'll make one for my self. I'll let you know how it went
How did it go?
Tell me the cats cloak is epic!
I'm making a názghoul cosplay and this helped a lot, thank you!

Let’s all just take a moment to appreciate the fact that my dad was good in math class.
OMG I LOVE THIS SO MUCHH!!!! Wanted to make this for so long!!! But luckily i have come across your turorial. .. never knew that these are so easy to make!!! You tutorial is very precise and focused. U are a perfect teacher . THANKYOU
if its a sticky up hooded cloak then it s a cloak , if its flat hood then it s a cape, and I am very attracted to both. Well done and keep it up!
ok did any of y’all do this as a kid when you just grab ur blanket and wrap it around ur self-
I can finally become the mage I was meant to be
I love this for you
*high five for normalizing cloak wearing*
Just a heads up for beginners: if you are making a short length cloak, i.e. if the width of your fabric is not near equal to the length you desire, do not use this method. You will end up with an oblong rectangle and not a square which geometrically cannot be folded to the appropriate size triangle for cutting. You can follow along up until she folds it width-wise. It is very similar to making a circle skirt for your neck, but you only want half a circle skirt for the half circle. Found out the hard way and nearly thought I'd wasted my only fabric I had before the Renaissance festival. Amazing tutorial otherwise!
i know this comment is super old but thank you!! i too panicked because halloween is days away and the fabric i’m using was a gift LOL thank you thank you! ;v;
Your video is very clear and easy to follow. The extra graphics are very helpful as well. By luck, this cloak is just what we want to make. Thank you for your effort :]
as a beginer this is very unclear and complicated :/
We also have written instructions with photos and diagrams. It's often easier to follow with written instructions in addition to the video. Hope it helps!

Oooo army
Thank you very much for this great tutorial! A black cloak can be used for so many things that I'm going to give it a try myself. I'm thinking about using wool, hair canvas or fusible interfacing, and black chintz for the lining. Wish me luck finding all the materials!
I'm going to make a jacket with an attachable cloak, hope this tutorial works ^^
Wait, I'm so confused about sewing the outer fabric of the hood to the cape part. How do you sew the very beginning and end part with out sewing over the lining bit?
Hi Julia, I don’t remember this being an issue at all. You can pull both the hood and main body linings away from the outer fabric so the linings have right sides facing too and start to sew at the seam between the lining and outer fabric. Since the linings aren’t sewn together yet, it’s easy to do the same thing at the end. It’s hard to explain but I think it will make sense once you’re doing it!
I want my own one so badly! Omgg and I broke my sawing machine yesterday😂 idk how ppl in my town would react if they have seen me in one, but I wouldn’t care i guess. Maybe for first time, but I just want cloak since I was like 9 or 10. I wanted to be elf and wear those beautiful dresses and tiaras. Anyway, I just need to fix that machine 😂
I made a red cloak using this guide for my moms Pomeranian so she could be little red riding hood this Halloween
Clara, that was a great tutorial- thank you so much!! No unnecessary chatter; clear concise instructions, and the music was not blaring in my ears drowning out your instructions. I've subscribed ❤🤩
Thanks! This was very clear and exactly what I needed to make capes for my granddaughters for Christmas!

Anyone else stressing about this absolutely insane measurement system?! A yard?! How do you make a yard? Measure 1.763 meters and add the leg of a deer and the length of half a hair of George Washington then pray to the god of inches or what?? I really like these instructions but the American system of measurements is crazy!
It was meant for country's that can win wars and make it to the moon
@@dlk7613 Wow, you really wanna go there? I was criticising units of measurements but if you want to make this about nationalism …
I could point out that this is the country where you have to suffer and possibly die if you‘re not rich enough to afford proper medical care. Or that this is also the country where school children have to live in fear that they can be shot everyday.
But if you want to keep this about units of measurements we can also discuss how this country once crashed a million dollar mission on Mars because they accidentally measured in freedom units while literally all the other space organisations in the project used a more logical system.
Your country has done many great things but freedom units isn’t one of them.
It doesn't matter about the measurements the principle is the same. I'm copying in cm, let's see how it goes lol

I’m planning to do this, but I don’t have a sewing machine. Hopefully it’ll turn out okay! Lol
Sarah Howell that Love Olympus pic tho! Also good luck with the cloak
Look on craigslist or ask around. I've sold sewing machines for $10-$20. Some ppl might also just let you borrow or have 1. Otherwise, sewing by hand takes a lot longer, but it should turn out the same. Best of luck
You can do it! Even without a sewing machine, you can sew it by hand. I did it by hand, it took a while, but it worked.
Excellent narration and detailed explanation with very helpful mini graphics. I find that this is by far the easiest sewing instruction video to follow. Thank you.
nice job! so cool ~~
Thanks!
I make one that's 4 sections (2 mirrored) and it creates just the best majestic flow when walking. Love it
Greetings all. OFS, what material would you recommend for Luke Skywalker the force awakens cloak. I've made 3 so far from this video, I can't seem to find any material I like and can only get it 40/42" wide so I end up with lots and lots of sections as I am about 5'10" tall. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Absolutely, we have options that are at least 54” wide. The fabric that looks most like the cloak is natural linen: www.onlinefabricstore.net/natural-irish-linen-fabric-.htm
Since linen is pricey, here’s some alternatives:www.onlinefabricstore.net/5-oz-khaki-poly-cotton-poplin-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/natural-cotton-poly-danish-linen-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/63-inch-single-fill-7-oz-duck-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/premier-prints-linen-natural-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/antique-natural-milestone-twill-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/khaki-cotton-twill-fabric-.htmwww.onlinefabricstore.net/khaki-poly-cotton-twill-fabric-.htm

I’ve just finished a red crushed velvet cape for my granddaughter (Little Red Riding Hood) using your instructions. They were spot on and the cape is fabulous - thank you so much 💖
I really think cloaks need to come back in style. I don't know why they haven't. They are cool looking, easy to wear and comfortable for cool weather.
Bold of you to assume this isn't just for every day use...
Me and my friend want to make this so we can ride our horses in the English saddle and dress up our horses to!!
I dont understand does the total length mean how long it's gonna be at the end or the total length of the fabric
Lmao I used to wear a cloak in middle school too... I was relentlessly bullied. Cloak squad!
You go girl!!! More power to you! I LOVE wearing cloaks!
*Cries in Metric*
Why you gotta do this Americans 😭😭😭
You tell us to measure “twice the total length and cut” but I still have no idea how long the side that gets cut should be. Is it a square? It’s hard to know because of the perspective, but are both sides equal in length?
So I was stuck on this same part for like..... 2 hours trying to figure out how to fold it right. after watching the video carefully 3 dozen times I finally saw that the fabric was not a perfect square. When she finishes her cut 2:54 you can see the fabric is not all the way to the bottom. So pretty much you pick the side you want , and fold the side right too it with the neck side at a point. One end of the fabric had an overhang of about 5 inches for me. As long as you can make the semi circle to the length you need , you will be fine.
I Know that this is an old video...but I just used it this weekend to sew a warm cloak for the Renaissance Festival. And it was very helpful. I had bought a pattern a couple of years ago, but this is way easier.
Happy to help!
I want to feel all into Walmart wearing that hahahahahahh
Love this! Thank you!
You did all that work and you didn't put the hood up
Awesome I love this
I don't know if anyone can give me a few tips, but, whenever I got to the part on folding my fabric diagonally, mine didn't fold perfectly like how it is in the video. Is that normal, or like, is there a way around it? I'm doing a shorter cape, so my measurements were much smaller. Thank you for your time if you've read this!
You're right, the corners and bottom may not line up depending the size and width of the fabric. Here it happened to be a square but as long as the edges are lined up when you fold it diagonally, it doesn't matter if the corners or bottom edges line up. You can cut off any excess. Good luck!
@@onlinefabricstore Thank you so much!
What are your strategies for keeping the hood on? I have a satin lined cloak that I'm wearing that slides off my head. I have thought about double sided tape and combs but I don't want them to ruin my hair. Any ideas?
Good question! The satin is very slippery. Unfortunately we couldn't think of a good solution for this either. If you do find something that works, we'd love to hear!
Haven't tried it myself, but I've heard from others that you can stick a piece of Velcro to the bottom of the hood then stick that to your hair and it'll stay in place without ruining much of anything
Some people attach a comb hairslide to the hood so it fixes to your hair very securely. Or you could curl back the hood like when you roll your sleeves up.
Alternative ideas, saw some loops of cord to the top inner edge and use a couple of hairclips.
I know this is an old video, but what if I only have half of the yards of fabric. So instead of 5 total I have more like 3. Will it just be shorter?
Is it 5 yards TOTAL plus hood? Or 5 for the outside, 5 for the inside, plus the 1 for the hood?
Im getting confused at 2:08. I dont know what you mean using width wise because then when i fold it diagonally, the salvage end doesnt line up the same as yours does here😣😵💫
Though im not making one right now i will be in the future and hope to have figured it out when the time comes
Sweet! I figured it out! Thank you for making this tutorial, cant wait to showcase the final product
Is your fabric a square shape? I ran into the same problem until I found that one of my sides was too long.
Thank you for the math outline lol that’s honestly super helpful

Anyone have recommendations on the best place to get medieval clothing (1150-1335AD) for men (English), women (Iberian) and children that also doesn't look out of place in the modern world?
I was thinking that footwear like the following could suit (whilst not necessarily being perfect)
Men: Sandals, Espadrilles, Ropes Sandals, Empire Sandals, Leather Thongs, Menorcan Sandals, Gladiator Sandals, Clogs, Monk Strap, Moccasins, Woven Sandals, Suede Loafer, Chukka Boots, Chelsea boots, Plimsolls, Cuban Heel Chelsea Boots, Chukka Desert Boot, Driving Shoes,
Women: Strappy Tie-up Sandals, Knotted Suede Toe Post Sandal, Cross Strap flat sandals, Raffia double strap slide sandals, woven leather tie leg sandal, Mules, Clogs, Over the Knee Boots, Ballet Flats, Lace Up Knee High Boots, Stirrup Boots, Slouch Boot, Desert Lace Up Shoes, Cuban heel western Chelsea boot with buckle detail.
Likewise, Quilted Clothing (like Quilted Sweatshirt, Quilted Puffer Coat, Quilted Coat, Quilted Tracksuit Pants, Quilted Tracksuit Top, Quilted Jumper) could suffice for Civilian Gambeson.
I’m also thinking that Tunics (Knee, Cocktail, Midi or Maxi Length), Leggings, Tights, Long Sleeved V Neck Shirt, Tank Top, Henley Shirt, Track Pants, Hoodie, T-Shirt with Notch Neck, Driving Gloves, Suede Gloves, Leather Gloves could be used.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
I find it easy to use an actual pattern, there are so many. I usually have 4 panels for the outside and 4 panels for the lining. I've also made my fair share of cloaks.
Lollll uhhhh... you lost me.
Hi Jordan, sorry if the instructions are unclear. We do have the full written instructions here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-a-hooded-cloak-with-a-lining/

Rickert Drawings69 honestly same LOL
Is their a way to add holes for sleeves in this cloak? This is exactly what I want mine to look like but I mine needs sleeves.
You could cut slits in the seams at the shoulders and add sleeves there. We don't have specifics since we haven't tried this, but that should work. Add the sleeves to the outer fabric and lining before sewing them together. Leave extra length in the sleeves to hem. Good luck!
Thanks so much for this thorough video! I just finished my cloak for a renaissance festival and it came out great and I learned a ton! I wish there was an easy way to post a picture. My hood ended up being absolutely massive, I think because I cut a larger neck hole and that made the whole hood bigger (6" instead of 5 like in the video - I'm a 6' tall guy so I thought I'd need bigger) - but it's still cool. Mine took all weekend because I'm new to sewing and I also made it more complicated than it had to be by making the hood liner out of faux fur that wraps over the edge a couple inches to make a furry hood rim, and I added a strip of fur down each of the front edges, but I'm thrilled with it.
1:56 measure twice the total Length and cut... cut where exactly??
Also twice the total length of what? Of myself or of the fabric??
2:06 “fold the fabric in half” which? We just cut it so it’s either The one that’s 2 times the width or the one that’s only 1 times the width and idk which
Check out the written instructions here - www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-a-hooded-cloak-with-a-lining/
hopefully that can help answer your questions.
Thanks for another great tutorial! I love your videos and find them very clear and easy to follow.
You're welcome! Glad you found it helpful :)
Question, for a larger person is the measuring the same for the yardage? Total length×3÷12÷3?
Generally yes, plus an extra yard for wiggle room when cutting pieces out and have enough for the hood. Keep in mind, the larger the length measurement, the narrower the pieces will be, so it's possible you may want 2 extra pieces to make it more full. If this is the case, multiply by 4 instead of 3. Also if your fabric is less than 60" wide, then pieces will come out smaller and you may need more pieces to get it full enough. You can find the diagram for larger cloaks here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-a-hooded-cloak-with-a-lining/
Good luck!
very clear and no pattern to buy😊
Now make one out of an Elk’s Hide.
I have been looking for a way to make these for a while but my husband and I are larger / plus size and would still like a lot of drape in the cloak is there a formula for making it bigger around
Hi Julie, This cloak would be easy to make more full! The cloak in the video is 3/4 of a circle but you could do a full circle instead by cutting out 2 half circles. Or if you use the method for longer cloaks, just keep cutting out additional pieces until you have enough for a full circle. For the fabric amount you will need 4x the length of the cloak plus an extra yard for the hood. For the longer cloak method, you may need another extra yard. The hood would be made in the same way as in the video. Good luck!
Nice but the cloak body part were abit confusing
Sorry if it was confusing, we do have the full written instructions which may be easier to follow: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-make-a-hooded-cloak-with-a-lining/

Now to convert inches and yards to metres and cm 😅 And I only got 4m (was told that was plenty) so looks like I need another 2m 😭
thanks..5:48 hood
So my cloak size will be 54 inches with the seam + neckline already included. The material I’m purchasing is 44 inches wide, how would I cut that out? 54 multiplied 3 is 162 inches. I’m terrible with math and very confused.

Anyone else here a pagan druid wanting a ritual clothing? :P
Celtic. But yes. I'd like it longer in the back though.
Note it's 2 yards plus 1 for a hood total 3 yards for outer fabric and another 3 for inner fabric you may want 3 1/2 yards if you want hand holes with trim or pockets or other decorative but matching fabric bits
For winter ones use a woolen felt with a plush furr inner and it's toasty warm and lovely and normal use ones should come to mid calf not lower so to keep it clean longer ones are for weddings or photos only, not practical use.
this ones for cool not cold weather that she made I'm making mine soon😆

Was this heavy with both fabrics and also is there another fabric similar to the twill that has a sheen to it?
Yes, this cloak was fairly heavy with the twill and satin fabric. Peachskin and bengaline are lighter weight than the twill and have a sheen without being super shiny. Habutae is a popular lightweight lining fabric.
